Thundermug: nice looking box and there is also a WOOD CABINET thread you can post it on that you can see other member's cool ones and also ask questions there if you might have any on restorations. KENN also just posted up some of his on a separate thread and he has some serious wood toolbox restoration skills. thanks for posting it

Chevy: nice looking old box for small stuff.

00: nice to see you posting again. i missed another summer in Penticton and wish i was there. i bet it was awesome again. so how do you like living in a vacation spot year round? take care

ALL: i went on a road trip yesterday that started out as a search to replace a handle on my mom's 1949 GE stove/oven that my dad broke in a fall a few weeks ago. i didn't find the exact match yet, but i did rent a 6x12 Uhaul for $35 and drove a couple hours to pick up a 1950's GE stove/oven that might end up being my shop oven if i don't sell it because the handles didn't match. or i'll swap out my 4 good handles for my mom's 3 and see if that works. in any case this is GE stove is built like a tank and i might end up being tool storage and for baking paint on tools and vises so thought i'd post it for those of you that might not of thought of that use for one of these.

hope you are all having a great weekend/holiday.

ALL: i found another interesting NO NAME toolbox that is on really heavy duty wheels and might weigh 200-300 pounds empty. it rolls around like a dream for being so heavy. there are good size bolts welded into the sides of the back of the drawers to keep them from falling out so not sure how i'm going to remove them if i want to restore this box.

lots of pictures here. i need to fix the latch, but in the meantime there was a hole drilled through the top into the front door so it keeps shut for now.

anybody have one like this?

Drives, I suspect that one was a custom one off build for a particular purpose, possibly by the guy that needed it.

Outlaw: it's a tank and i'm still trying to find a spot and a use for it, but thinking it's a KEEPER.

All: here's another file cabinet and i hadn't seen this design before so i thought it needed to find its way into my garage. it's built pretty well and maybe 50 years old and i'm sure i'll find something to store in it. i think it was made by STEELMASTER, but i'll double check if anybody thinks different. it's already found a different spot to reside because i'm going to make a stand more stout for my Baldor buffer and block grinders.

My wife bought this for me a couple of weeks ago at an antique store parking lot sale. The bottom right drawer needs to be replaced, but the rest are solid.

Riley: i love those style cabinets and have 2 Cole in my small garage now for screws, nails, electrical and plumbing supplies. i've had similar ones made by Steelmaster, but your tag doesn't look like either so do tell who made yours?

also if your bottom drawer isn't rusted through on the bottom would maybe JB Weld or some other product maybe revive it?

AND in case you didn't already know it your bride is a KEEPER!!

This one is a Steelmaster.

The drawer is rusted through the front, not the bottom. It must have had only the right side exposed to the elements, with the bottom probably touching the ground. The bottom/right frame is also rusted through but I can reinforce that.

Edit: I blew-up and cropped a picture of the maker's tag.

Riley: i never see single drawers like that laying around, but if i do i know who is going to get one. your guys at work might know how to fill it with weld or some other fix and sounds like you have the cabinet structural stuff figured out. these hold a ton but they CAN BE OVERLOADED.

thanks for letting me know which maker made yours

BB: actually those are not what i like, but i bet they hold a lot of stuff. i like STOUT, OLDER, and probably even a bit rusty.

ALL: i just picked up this cabinet and not sure i'm going to keep it. i promised to buy it before i knew the drawer fronts fold down so it was more for paper. it probably can be welded or used for something other than nuts and bolts and parts.

any ideas on how to use a drawer where the front face folds down?

Find trays that fit close and that could be an advantage... Open, lift, carry the tray where you can work with it's contents...

Thought I would share my latest metal cabinet project. I picked up this chest of drawers, at a garage sale last summer, for $20. It was chock full of goodies.

Photo-Jul-20-12-45-30-PMa.jpg

I figured I would use it in the backyard shop, but after remodeling our house, we really needed a small table or surface next to the front door to drop off keys, mail, etc. With a little modification, this would fit the bill!

First I scavenged some live edge Walnut I had in the corner:

Then sanded, primed, and painted the cabinet with some leftover automotive paint from when I fixed my wife's car panel:

Now, we have a sweet little cabinet next to the front door! Best of all, everybody has two junk drawers, so there is no excuse to leave stuff lying around everywhere.

Chase: all 4 boxes for $50 total? looks like the top boxes match the opposite bottom boxes or are at least closer. if it was me and i needed more storage or a tool box i'd buy the one that looks older with the smaller pull handles. the one with drawer length handles looks a lot like a Craftsman and the one i like better might be an old Snap on, Cornwell or some other pre 1960's brand.

Keith: any brand name on it? looks like old school maybe Hamilton or Lyon or do tell? also what are the dimensions of the total unit and what size are the drawers?

nice find and i haven't seen one like it, but looks a lot like my blueprint or flat files i own.

Drivesitfar: I really went over them when I cleaned them and haven't noticed any branding besides the Vellumoid Gaskets logos which are also on the back. It's possible there is a stamp somewhere I didn't see.

The dims are
Outside: 38w x 17h x 15d
Drawer: 36w x 1h x 14 1/2d

They definitely seem old, however I really don't know much about them. I couldn't get any info from the previous owner and my google searches have turned up empty. I'm going to email the gasket company when I get a chance and see if they have any info. I'd love to learn more about these.

KEITH: I am loving your cabinets more and more every time i see them. are they three separate cabinets or does it just look that way. can you post a couple pictures of the half moon shaped logo in the middle of the top of each cabinet? or what does it say in it if it might say anything? is the company still in business?

some of the bigger companies in the pre 50's era had cabinet companies just put their logo on them such as Craftsman, Snap On, and many others so maybe that's what happened here. my guess is it's a Hamilton, but there are a lot of other great metal cabinet companies in business then and even now.

if you do get a response back from the gasket company let us know what they say if anything. also where are you located? i'm guessing on the EAST COAST maybe or if you are close to me and might want to swap for something I own that could happen if i'm not using it or can live without them.

good luck

Keith, I like those cabinets a lot! great find!

Drawers are only 1" deep? at 17 H and 10 drawers I'd have expected a bit higher...

been trying to get this from work for about 6 months now. hasn't been used since 2006. i keep hearing "we'll get back to ya". i'm not sure what i would even use it for now, i have already solved my storage solutions and it would be just taking up space.IMG_1079.jpg

The Vellumoid company is still around out of Worcester MA. I emailed them a couple photos this morning.

I do have 3 sets stacked on top of each other. There was a 4th set I was unable to get.

Here is a picture of my home made mobile restoration cart. I found this in the wall of a building in New York City while renovating office space. It had several old Novell 286 2.x servers sitting on the bottom along with an ancient IBM keyboard and monitor up top.

Based on what I discovered, this thing was sitting in this walled off closet area since the mid 1980s. It's important to note that none of the hardware was plugged in and running. Someone was simply too lazy to remove the stuff so they just threw up sheetrock and left everything inside the wall. Unfortunately, there were no other treasures other than the cart. The discovery was made back in 1999.

I took it home, popped on a set of castors and now I use it as a mobile restoration cart. If you look closely, you can see my electrolysis bucket on the bottom shelf. Up top, I have my trusty Prentiss No. 52 vise and a two stage Red Wing polishing/wire wheel.

Keith: keep us posted on what you find out about the history of your cabinets and yes even after a couple days of looking at them i still think they are special. Nice find.

IH: nice story. nice way to re purpose some old office supplies. since it's made of wood you might want to also post it over on the WOOD CABINET thread i started at the same time I started this one.

Dean: those should be awesome when you finish the plan you have for them. i've got several that size and mine are made by Mayline and Hamilton. your handles are a bit different so any chance you might have a brand name on yours to mention?

nice find and post up the progress and finished pictures when you have time.

ALL: speaking of Mayline i picked up another one that is white and 54 inches wide, 36 inches deep and with the stand about 20 inches tall. it should hold a lot of stuff. by the way it wasn't easy getting it on the shelf on this rack so i'm not sure it will be moving anytime soon.

I picked this box up at a garage sale a few weeks ago for 5.00. It's heavier than sin, built like a tank and has no manufacturer markings. It's some sort of parts container and the dividers are welded into the drawers.

I'm not even halfway through this thread, and it's already one of my favorites!

I was lucky to win this beautiful Equipto cabinet at an auction a few weeks back... it's a real beaut, and even came with a few odd bits 'n pieces in it!

The lamp and the Equipto bench cabinet came from the same auction, with the bullet vise.

The check filing cabinets to the right were cast-offs from work. Love love love those things!
