That's not my Starrett vise but my guess is a 925 but could be mistaken.

So after I picked up those two Reeds and that sweet hand vise I bought this weird cool vise from the same seller. It eas photographed on the side of my pick- up truck. It is BIG and well built. Bronze bushings, heavy construction. I have no idea what I'll use it for but for $50 couldn't leave it there. Seller also had an early Parker 5" 2x. He wanted $200 but it was like new. I just ran out of $$

Pretty sure its at least a 1/2 inch narrower (one "mini jaw" less?)

Oh :willy_nil, you'll have me schooled on these things eventual Outlaw!

(I'm at my girls house, I couldn't measure my other one... Plus, SHE'S ONLY GOT ONE VISE HERE! It is a nice old REED though...)

I posted these over in the Garage Sale thread but thought I would share this beast of a MAC vise. It has 6" jaws and it is hard to see the size in the pics.
That's a 3.5" Cman to the left for comparison.

And the sibling fight starts! (or continues...)

Off and on but only for the last 52 years or so.

I'm glad you chimed in. mbs and I have been texting about that extra base to the left of the vise. Do you recognize it? It's not the horizontal attachment. I'll get some pictures of the other side. It's not what you'd expect. I think it's user made but the color is a close match.

It's a flush mount attachment. I found one in the wild a few years back, sold it to a Versa-Vise "collector" on eBay and he told me of the MANY he has, it was the first OEM flush mount attachment he'd seen. It was orange too, by the way.
Cool find!

CRS: even if you already own a VERSA VISE that one has everything except another mounting piece that is also rarely seen. keep it and since it only takes 3 screws to mount it you can put up two or three on a bench or two in your garage. nice find and OMG did you really get it for that? you should go back and give the widow more money cause the estate company didn't have a clue how great that vise is.

Thanks Zoomie! You solved the mystery before I could get the pictures posted. It was indeed mounted flush to the top of the bench. I had a heck of a time getting it off too. It seemed like he built the benchtop around the base. The regular three footed base was mounted on the side of the bench with the post held parallel to the floor. The pipe jaws were on a shelf with a bunch of scattered junk. It's a good thing I looked around several times before I left.

Zoomie nailed it. Flush mount and I think factory. recess the plate into the bench and when you dismount the vise, you can drop the big post so it's all flush.

So you have two of many possible bases:

Also available were a Clamp on, one for a sawhorse, a drill press base, and then the right angle adaptor (I have that one)

drives: Well, yeah I did really get it for $10. Surprisingly, it's not the least that I have paid for a V-V. I did feel a little guilty so I made up for it by buying a few other things too. I don't think there was a widow involved. Whoever lived there last was the last to go.

Outlaw: Thanks for the information. Whoever mounted this one didn't realize that the post could be lowered. The set screw was in an inaccessible place. I didn't know there was a set screw until I finally got the base off the bench.

CRS: Happy to hear you felt a bit guilty and were at least looking for a widow to hand some more cash to. It sounds like i should be trading you for something that is common out in my part of the world if you can find VV's for that cheap. I bet your brother will end up with those pipe jaws won't he?

I've never seen that flush mount piece you found. i've only seen the extra piece that Outlaw says he has in the video and would love one. maybe Boatman can make us all one and we can all have a triple swiveling VV vise.

If anyone was to make up the saw horse base I might be interested. I don't weld, yet.

You don't need to weld, get the post, (1-1/2" bar stock) drill a couple of holes in one end and tap them; then screw to that on a StrongTie something that fits the Sawhorse.

Another interesting base if you have two of them, is to get a foot or 18 inches of the post as 1-1/2" bar stock; clamp that in a bench vise, and slide the Versa Vises on from the side and you have two parallel vises.

That's an interesting idea Outlaw. I might have to come up with a length of bar stock. I have twin leg vises on my bench and often use two Zyliss vises on either end of the bench.
Jim

I just reposted at your request CR.
