Wow, like your baby Parker Zoom. I would love to get my hands on one.

Nice vises from Rusty and G-man tonight. Rusty the ratchet vise with the swivel jaws is a rare one. I have two Ratchet vises if you have any questions on the mechanic's.

Not sure if I saw yours.

Now that thing is cool.! Nice find. One day I'll find one.

Thanks Guys!
Kevin, you are one of the few that may actually be able to pry this out of my possession!

Bagged, I haven't forgotten about the Sawyer, just been busy helping my girl with her kids, She had some minor surgery... Might have to trade her in!:lol_hitti:lol_hitti
I'll get with you this coming week!

Take care!

Bought a new toy today...80C Yost new from Yost delivered to Home Depot. This is a beast at 105 Lbs. The handle got slightly bent during shipping but works just fine. I flipped it over and gave it a proper lube job. I kept looking for a used one but they want big money in my neck of the woods for large Yost vices. This is USA made so I'm happy with it. I was very happy to see very little slop in all the moving parts.

Just curious does anyone have any literature on the old Athol cog handle vises? I recently picked up a model 728 3.5in swivel jaw/base and cog handle.

Sent from my XT1585 using Tapatalk

I have never seen a swivel jaw with the rachet handle. I thought my 2" clamp on was odd but yours is much nicer. If you had a reason to mount a vise in the middle of your bench it would still tighten down and you would be able to move the handle out of the way.

I got my swivel pin out a minute ago. it wasn't really rusted in place it just seems some one just hammered it in a little more then it should have been. But anyways does your pin have a o ring on it to?

Rusty65:

I'm glad your swivel pin came out easy on your Prentiss 22, as yours looked like it had been hammered down like mine.

I always thought that mine might have had a sleeve for the swivel pin, but after seeing your swivel pin and collar, it makes me think it has the same design as your pin.

My Prentiss 22 can be seen at post #45414 and below link will get you there quicker

Is there a reason that folks post pictures so huge that it takes two computer screens to view them?

Most of us dont get to choose what size the pic becomes when we upload it to a photo sharing site. We dont pick large or small photos. Probably depends on camera resolution.

£45 and two hours driving got me this
View media item 65278View media item 652793.5" Columbian. Only thing wrong with it is its a bit rusted and the handle is stuck in the spindle. This is 6lb heavier and opens 1" more than the British equivalent.
Was a bit expensive but its the first Columbian I have seen here.

Nice find dutchgray! What's your plan to get the handle unstuck? Are you planning an etank bath for it?

That is a nice vise, it is the Yost equivalent to the Wilton 1780 Tradesman.

Pretty clean, you are starting to have a nice collection of Yankee vises?

I buy the American ones when I see them, which isn't often, got 5 I think, Morgan, 2 Parkers, Fulton and this Columbian.

I have never E tanked but it is probably the best way for this one, will have to get one set up. Usually I would wire brush the bits I can get at and use oil soaks and heat to get things free.

I have the 5" version of that vise. Take your time cleaning and lubing and you'll have a lifetime vise.

So I tested out a theory, and it turns out that the Wilton magnet in my truck also attracts Snap On Wiltons....nice little 1740 that should clean up great. I'm thinking of doing it in an alternate SO color like Extreme Green.

Dutch: good catch and those older Columbians are good vises. i've got handles unstuck as easily as just squirting Kroil on them or if really rusty i set them in a bucket of vinegar for a couple days, but make sure to rinse off and dry off all the vinegar or it will keep eating at the steel.

GMAN: bright green is a proven color or use clean it up and put BLO on it, but i know you will probably do a full on restoration. your Wilton magnet seems to be working fine and i bet some of the other members in your area are going to complain later that they can't find a vise. they have complained in the past too so i know you are turning over rocks and looking everywhere to find these so WELL DONE!!

I've had good luck with a bit of heat and a large copper faced mallet to encourage the handle to slide once more.

ETank will not free the handle, works only on open surfaces, will convert the rust; for the handle any old way will work: penetrating oil and heavy hammer, or a gentle push with the hydraulic press.

OK, here is my third recent acquisition, a Prentiss 19 1/2. This follows the first two, a Monarch (PV Co) 228 and an Athol 613 1/2 that I posted yesterday.

Once again, these photos are in the as-obtained condition, and this one is a bit grimy inside, but the outside is pretty clean, just a bit rusty. Jaw pin is stuck (surprise!), so I'm letting some Kroil work on it. There is about 3/4 turn of backlash, so I'll need to figure that out when I pull it apart. Both jaw faces are pretty good, but the top of the back one has been "peened" so that the junction line with the rear jaw body is almost invisible. Front jaw doesn't have that "feature."

Since there doesn't appear to be any remaining finish worth trying to save, I may try electrolysis on this one. Good reason for me to set it up, I think.

Cheers!

Picked up this Wilton 9350 bullet for $125 yesterday. Although it is a little cruddy and rusty it has not been beaten on at all and those copper Wilton jaw inserts nicely protected the original ones which seem like new to me. This one has a April 1984 birthday. (4 84). I like the heavy duty swivel center compared to the crack prone earlier ones.

Hello everyone. Does anyone have any information on this vise? It is mounted on a work cart that I got from work today. It is a Craftsman, that is all I know. I'm wondering what time frame this vise is from. Thank you all.

Saw a garage sale on my way to one of my customers so I stopped. I was buying a couple items and negotiating and saw an old 64 impala in the garage, so I started talking about my old tool addiction, etc. I asked him what he had and he said he had a couple vises and to come back tomorrow. I told him I was busy tomorrow so he ended up bringing a few out. He brought out a couple open screw vises which I was not interested in, and this cool little blacksmith vise. I bought it for $12. I haven't had a chance to really look at it closely. Is there anyway to identify this little guy?

Thanks, the Dohm Wilson is quite rare, they usually get a fair amount of bidding on Ebay and sell well, that was a BIN and reasonably priced. CW has one as well. Should be quite useful mounted on a T so it can be clamped in the main vice when needed.

That vise from Columbian (508) was made from at least 1960 possibly a year or so earlier. By 73 at least, possibly earlier, but I don't think earlier than '69, I think the Mfg went over to Japan with a 391 Mod No. Prefix.
