I really like that wrinkled look as this is the first time I've been exposed to it. Will need to investigate further the materials required and steps to be taken.

That is a nice vise, it is the Yost equivalent to the Wilton 1780 Tradesman.

This was almost $250. cheaper than a Wilton! I had a large Yost like this 10 years ago and let a "Friend" talk me out of it for money and a trade for what I suspect is a large import vice. This thread has really got me into the vices I own and now I look at them as vintage/collectables instead of just tools.

Picked up this Swinden rotating jaw vice recently off Facebook.
Its unused & never been bolted to a bench

Being in the UK Ive had a few Record, Paramo & Parkinson vices in the past but hadn't heard of Swinden, After a quick search they're used in the MOD here

I like the fact that its got straight & rounded jaws

I just could not stand looking at the ancient Parker with white paint splattered on it. I flicked off the paint with a pocketknife, polished it with a Scotchbrite pad, and finished with Simple Green. Underneath it all is what looks like its original japan finish. I will break it down later for a better cleaning but I want to just add some BLO and preserve the japan. Then it gets mounted for its new woodworking job.

Dang, I think that's beayoooootiful! I love the lines on that one, and I'm glad you're trying to preserve the original finish!

Drives, I gave that Rock Island to a friend awhile back. I think it was Rust-oleum and was a PITA to use and took forever to dry. The 8" Parker had a green textured finish on it.

jreb, On the next two I tried the VHT and it was easier to use to than the Rust-oleum. The wrinkle pattern is a little tighter and more uniform. I choose gray because it was a base coat for the green top coat on the two Hartmann's

I wrinkle-painted a Desmond Simplex combination vise a year or two ago, I did like the result very much:





I don't know how to make paint wrinkle, so I used VHT Wrinkle Plus paint, in this example #SP204. It comes in Red, Blue, Grey, and Black the last time I checked. I did do some experimentation before hand to get the hang of it.

It needs to go down thick, and it needs warms temps to wrinkle. Since it is a thick coat it takes a few weeks to cure since I was just putting it out in the sun at the height of summer. I am sure an oven could speed things up.

An important thing I learned is to be aware of inside and outside edges and corners as they impact paint thickness and hence the degree of wrinkling. In my case the paint got a bit too thick on the inside corner by the base, and wrinkled more than I would have liked. Still not too bad.



Overall I am a fan of the wrinkled look and will do more of it in the future.

Joe...I love the paint job. I have never seen that before and it looks really cool. Once the paint cures, how well does it hold up to scratches and dings?

This is at an auction I may go to this weekend. It's really the only thing going on. I'm pretty sure it's a Record but not 100% . Just don't see many of them here in the Midwest . I've never owned a non USA vise so if the price is right it may be the first.

I am not sure, as I sold it on eBay for a pretty good price. The paint did seem pretty hard when I sold it. The VHT paint is used by auto enthusiasts for things like valve covers, etc. I assume it can be chipped like any other paint, though.

As always, surface prep is the key to good adhesion. I am pretty careful to have a clean surface before I hit it with etching primer.

GET: so you spray on the VHT to get the primer and wrinkle look and then you spray on the color? what brand and color did you use on the vise in the middle picture? it looks better than new in my opinion and i'd consider painting a vise like that maybe next summer when we have some heat again.

Rust-oleum satin SAGE #7720 and then satin clear on top. It does need heat to wrinkle so hot summer sun is good.

Drives You crack me up! . If I do end up with it, it may have to get a red coat!
I may never see a quick release Parkinson around here. Parkers , Reeds Columbians and Wiltons are the main finds for me. I have to stretch my boundaries to find different ones. Road tripping this weekend, 300 one way so maybe I'll find something along the way!

BW: so if you really would like some help you might also put in your next posts with the vises you are thinking of keeping by telling us what you plan to do in your garage or shop. some of us have just 2 vises set up and some of have 7 with more than a few at the ready.

have you taken a look at the vise stands thread where you can maybe make a trailer hitch mount to use more than one vise in the same spot? here's one of my favorite benches set up for just that.

DSF Sorry it took so long to get back to you. Since you asked I will tell (although I have pretty much decided things at this point). First off the one on my tool box. Just a general purpose box that we are currently finishing up, and I figured, why not put a vice on it. I am already decided on the RAE because it has a swivel base, and well, it is freaking COOL. In my house I am thinking of the small vise, just something to use when I am tinkering/fixing inside. Now for the large garage I am hoping to build this winter, I am thinking of a large #6 Record vise that I scored from a client. We were helping her clean her garage and she had the vise there, I got it for $50 bucks and it looks like new. That one I am planning on putting on a stand for my garage for when I am welding something etc.

As far as the trailer hitch mount, we usually build our own, and I have a couple at work where my irrigation installers use when working in the field. Not sure I would ever use it for myself, than again, I still have a bunch of Vises so maybe I will keep one on a receiver just because....

The one you posted is definitely a Paramo and a No 5 is a 5" so a nice size for a mechanics vice. Its almost a strait copy of the Record. Not as heavy as an American of the same size but a decent vice.

They are pretty rare, I've only seen a handful of them on here, but that price is pretty optimistic, IMO.

One sold on Ebay about two weeks ago for something like $433 before shipping. Granted, it wasn't as nice, but it still gives you a reference point.

Top: those Paramo's and Record vices and a lot of European vices just don't sell for a lot so if you really want it i'd say a benjamin would be tops. and half that would be better and i'd probably buy it for that every day so your call. i think i sold a 6 inch Paramo with a swivel base to a GJ member here locally for a benjamin, but that was a couple years ago now. i don't see them often around here much anymore and i've sold several of the ones i owned to members. if you want to add some other names to your wall of vises you should get a Leinen and FPU Bison too.

i also think you should paint all your European vices ARREST ME RED too so you can keep them separated cause they do tend to get restless.

Dutch: i agree that Paramo and Record vices were made well in years past and i still will buy them if they show up.

NIA: welcome to the thread and nice looking vises.

SRR: i suppose you can put any price on a Wilton SJ you want to, but like Zoomie and GMan said you should get a 6 incher for that price and even then that is optimistic.

This is a lovely old Parkinson vice I had a while back. It had quick release & a swivel base & weighed approx 90lbs +

I sold it to a good home as it was a bit too large for my bench at the time, but i wish I still had it now

I was browsing CL when I ran into this listing. The base looks very similar to those used on the Craftsman 519X series. Its hard to tell the actual size of that vise. For any of you looking for one, with some dimensions you might get lucky.

NIA: don't feel bad i've even sold a vise cause it was TOO BIG, but i'm not sure i would sell that one you sold. i bet the guy you sold it to is still smiling. keep looking and you'll find another in a barn, garage or old warehouse lonely and needing a good home.

AUTOPTS: since you are around today we had a little discussion about brass hardware being original parts on some Wilton bullet vises. to my knowledge i wouldn't think brass was ever a factory option so maybe you know. thoughts?

I know I wouldn't pay more than £50 for a mint No5 but I don't go after the standard non QR British Vices much, only the rare ones. The American market is definitely really strong compared to ours though. I would think average $ for an ordinary American 5" vice would be too much for a British vice.

OUTLAW: i love your screen shots helping members. just curious have you ever tried to use the PAPERCLIP that is just above where we are posting that by clicking on it pulls up that picture download screen? i've never used or tried your method, but i think it might be an extra click to get the screen you posted. i use the PAPERCLIP to attach pictures i have on my laptop that i've either saved off my cell phone or from GOOGLING. if you are just talking about links i used to just click on the link button in Photobucket and it would copy the link so i could paste the link in my post and i wouldn't have to use anything on GJ.
I quit using PB cause they changed to make things more difficult for me and i've seen too many threads ruined cause the PB posts disappeared when a member changed online services or left GJ.

Outlaw: i've never seen that Additional Options screen personally and by clicking the paperclip the pop up Manage attachments pops up so i can download up to 7 pictures at a time on each post. if i happen to have more than 7 pictures that are worth posting i'll just start another post and download more pictures there. I think there are a few other ways to get pictures on here.

one thing that happens to me and maybe others is if you post the big pictures from online links and try to read it on your cell phone the fonts get so small it's very tough to read and see the pictures.

some day maybe you can start a thread about how to highlight old vise and tool pictures so you can read names and pick out #'s like you seem to do.

also VA might spend a week or more teaching us how to search this thread and find a vise or maybe he has the post #'s on his vises since he owns about 50% of the ones that are posted and when we ask all he has to do is go out to the CHAIN GANG and look it up.

Looks like a Boley style vise. There are a lot of no name copies out there.
