I was the 2nd caller on this glorious ******* today. Yes, an 8" Reed 108. It is sold, but not to me. I even offered a ridiculous amount of $$ to try and have the guy unethically undercut the buyer, how unfortunate that I meet the one guy on cl who is ethical. Buy the way...it went for $100 and the price included that stand and a 5" Parker. I feel like killing myself I really do...:eyecrazy::willy_nil

Jaws look retrofitted, I could be wrong but it appears they were done right. The stand is the BOMB:shocking:

Joe - You would really have been the man with that deal. That was a killer bargain. Better get a speed dialer.

I posted a couple of small vises recently but I forgot this one.

saw this on fb. I know it is anvils, but this was the best place to post it imo.

CA: i know your standards and quality are up there, but i'm having a hard time seeing any issues with that Athol other than a few little nicks it looks gorgeous.

Schor: yep a good place to post a ton of old iron. it's the holiday season and i heard Christmas songs a few times today.

ALL: speaking of anvils i'm not anviless any longer. i picked up this Columbian and the government steel bench/desk and the seller sweetened the pie a little with a little more iron. i'll post details on the anvil as i clean it up over on the anvil thread. it's not perfect, but i don't need perfect today.

cheers

Love the festive sig pic outlaw.

He's the kind of Santa I want bringing me presents, it would probably be one of everything that Peck, Stow and Wilcox ever made, cause he's probably got (AT LEAST) two of each!

Merry Christmas Gentlemen!

I would personally pay up to $250 for nice 6in swivel monarch but would like to pay more like $100-150.

Moor: You know you are asking members that probably own more than a few vises and we don't need another one. A 6 inch monarch isn't a common thing cause about 100 years old and big ones tended to get beat on more and broke. Also monarch was made by Prentiss so make sure the back of the dynamic slide is not cracked. I'd pay $275 for it and I don't need a vise if its in great shape.
Any pictures?

I hate to be "That Guy", but look at the bottom back of the slide, is there a chunk missing? There is a lot of chipping around the jaw inserts and it looks like about a 30 degree bend in that handle.
The Monarch's style looks great, but I've only really seen a few that didn't look like they went down The Gauley on the bottom of a canoe...:dunno:
If it's a user, it's beefy, functional and fine, you are cool with the cost, then nice vise!

Take care!
Good luck!

I'm looking for some help on confirming if this 8 " vice is indeed made in England. Yes i know it states as such on the casting but upon review of another thread discussing just this issue i'm thoroughly confused. Also, not being able to find much information on said vise i was looking for opinions as to the quality and durability of this model. Any help would be appreciated.

Started to clean up my new favorite vise Reed 404.5 R. Still trying to decide on a color or go with BLO. Red seems to always look good on a Reed, of course there is that wrinkle green, then we could go with hammered light blue, but dont count out a nice machine grey YAAAAAA:willy_nil:willy_nil:confused::confused:

:yikes::twak::tantrum2::tantrum2:

I'm sure the handle could be straightened but in the event that the jaws are worn badly I'm assuming replacements are not readily available

Outlaw thanks for the picture for some reason my electronic device aint doing it tonight

Kmscotts actually sells replacement jaws that would fit. I'm seriously thinking about buying a set for my Prentiss no 22 which is also a 6in model.

From Prenits? The company is long gone. However I'm sure our own Dr Scott could fix you wight up if needed. The tops of the jaws don't seem abused so I'd guess the vise would clean up well. Go look at it and look for serious structural damage the pics might not show... If it's OK, and this is what you need in a vise, go do it.

Just remember; a 6" vise is substantial. Most people never need more than a 4"... (People that hang here ain't "most people"...)

Moor: that jaw situation is pretty typical of Prentiss jaws on that big Monarch. i can't recall how much my Monarch 6 inch weighed, but maybe the member who bought it from me can say. off hand i'd say about 130+ pounds so no little thing. that one would get my attention since i don't think i own a monarch currently and always liked them. the one i sold was to even out the weight on the Pallet/crate i built so i was told when asked if i'd sell it.

TT: if those Record vices say MADE IN ENGLAND we determined that they were, the ones that said Sheffield, England we are still discussing if they were made in England or just put together there. also I think i heard there is a Sheffield city in China to make things even more blurry.

in my opinion that big Record you are looking at IS made in England and IS a great vice. just know that an 8 inch Record vice only weighs about 80-100 pounds where a 8 inch old US vise usually weighs 200-325 pounds.

CA: WRINKLED BRIGHT GRABBER GREEN is the ticket. If i'm wrong i'll buy you a jug of BLO.

cheers

Anyone have any information on a Holland's round slide keystone model J vise. It looks like it's possible to be a 7in jaw but not sure.

As drives said if it has 'made in England' on it it was.
That one is the later style (that they still make) and in my opinion not as nice as the earlier ones, but there is little in it, the 8" are rare here and I have never had one of those mechanics vices in 8".
Worth buying if in good order as ot appears and not to expensive.

I had to break out the Wilton magnet again....

Original paint, original stickers 9450 with the slide marked 12 - 68. This was at an estate sale and the owner appears to have been mostly doing woodwork on things like stereo speakers (lots of expensive audio stuff in the house). There were very few tools anywhere in the house...just some hand tools, so it sort of all fits.

Based off the bench it was on, the paint, etc, I'm pretty certain this vise was purchased new, stuck on the bench, and didn't move until this morning. I had to pay more than i wanted for it, but I couldn't stand the thought of leaving it there and having somebody buy it and slap a fresh coat of paint on it....that would be a tragedy. I'm going to list in the classifieds section here in case there's a collector who will truly appreciate how cool it is. If not, I'll keep it :)

GMan: you are going to need a BIGGER MAGNET to get close to finding Zoomie so BEE CAREFUL. he might also have a 500 pound anvil blocking the door too so bring some muscles if you do find them. :D

so i've never been a fan of those stickers, but nice that they are still on a 40 year old vise. what is the date on the slide if you get a chance to look?

also i guess you are tired of painting so might as well buy a few NOS vises until it heats up again.

cheers
