you're welcome; I guess Pokój is the name of the now defunct company in Tambow, Poland that made them back in the day; the vise itself may have been called something else. Maybe someone brought it to the US as their personal belongings since it's such a rara avis...

Yeah, I do think it's a rare vise since there just so little information about them, there almost virtually no information on the internet about it except here on GJ.
This thread and members must be the most informed and useful site in the internet/world. Thanks everyone for putting in the time to respond. Cheers!


I have to say I've been extremely lucky at this particular swap meet when it comes to small vises.

I also found there a couple of months ago this baby Prentiss rotating jaw vise and then with the Polish vise I bought a Paramo No. 1 with the swivel base for $20. I've been badly looking for a swivel base for my other No.1 so this weekend worked out well.

Hi macgee ... here's my baby Bison, it is the cast clamp on version. What's interesting is that yours has three tapped holes in the rotating base (mine does not) ... unless they are counterbored on top (where, if driven from top down [while not mounted to vise], the screwheads would be flush) then it argues that you do in fact have a bolt on clamp model ... I see this is the route they have gone with later vises so perhaps yours is a transirion model. I'm not entirely sure it is a date code, but one side of the clamp handle appears to have a "13", maybe from 2013?

Thanks for posting pics of your vise. Yours looks identical to the only other vise I found online, maybe it's the same one, they both look to be in excellent shape. The tap holes and reason why there just on one side is interesting because looking at the clamping set up, your pretty much stuck to just bolting to one side because the swivel base needs to flex in and out when tightening and loosing unless you mill slots for bolts to continue to allow the swivel base to slide in and out but hold the base down when exerted forces applied to the vise. So I don't think there is much more you can do which weakens vises stability having only one side holding the vise down to the table.

I looked at the vise again and the base was definitely milled. maybe there was a table clamp that you could bolt the vise to; who knows. This vise certainly qualifies for power arm, you would be the only kid on the block with this vise..

Metal can be 3D printed through laser sintering. A lot of SpaceX's engine components were manufactured with this process.

From left to right you have Sawyer, 6" Swindens, 6" Volvo (which became Fortis), and 8" Swindens. The Swindens are still made today but very expensive, the Volvo I have only ever seen in catalogues before.

Dang CW, that is definitely a mini EU version of the Golden Pile ... so many gems in there! Well deserved congrats!!!

They're not without their issues, amongst them there are some welded jaw plates, missing jaw plates, and badly made jaw plates as well as the Wilton swivel jaw having had a repair in the swivel pin area that I need to investigate more.

Mine is missing a jaw and is a a bit seized at the mo, but they are a very interesting vice.

Here is the same logo on a clamp on I have. HSB is an old hardware supplier from Chicago. I know it was imported because of the style, but from where ? Maybe CW can figure it out.

CW: funny you are barely home with a huge pick of about 8 vices and you are back searching for more. it definitely is BIG UN. i'd have to agree that the HUNT for these is a lot of fun. thanks for the pictures and best of luck putting them in good working order when you have time.

Outlaw: on Mac's little vise it sure is odd that they wouldn't machine off the entire bottom and maybe put a 4th hole in it so guessing they had a specific thing to mount it on. not sure what though.

Mac: thanks for offering up my 42 year old, but i'm sure CW has enough fun on his own moving these little vices around. GEESH what would shipping something like that across the pond cost anyway?

ALL: anybody doing any shipping across the pond? i know a couple members in the military can get things shipped to them without paying a small fortune, but how do ordinary people do this?

Found this hand made vise on eBay and won it on the opening bid and I think it's really well made and has very little play side to side and only 1/4 turn worth of slop in the screw action. It's a welded construction mostly and is keyed on the bottom. The action is one finger mostly through the full travel of the slide.

Spotted a vise listed on CL this morning and looked at only attached pic by seller and appeared to be a Columbian #504 with what looked like a small stand probably used with an adapter to slide vise into a trailer hitch.

Decided had time, so called and left msg.

Got call 1/2 hour later and picked it up within 45 mins.

This afternoon, took off the small stand and stripped off the paint on the vise.

4 inch jaws and max opening of 6 inches. Weight around 42 pounds. Columbian # 504 with fixed base and USA Made in Cleveland OH.

Just the three, so one of each size 4/6/8, the 8" is larger than I expected. I'll try and get a group shot with the 3 sizes when I get a chance.
The Volvo is also impressively built, in fact it makes the 6" Swindens seem quite weedy!

Bought a craftsman 5160 vice at an local estate tag sale for $15 still has some original blue paint under the red. Redo project; used my craftsman grinder to remove the old rust and paint. Car primer and finished with a dark grey. Made in the USA to last.

Moor: i've seen several of these vises in person and all have been broken in some manner. not a heavy duty vise, but it does have that LOOK especially in person. i probably should have bought the broken ones i saw to make on nice one, but at the time i was buying bigger stout vises.

ALL: in case some of you haven't seen it i started a Buffing 101 thread and the link is in my sig line. it's for any of you that want to show your skills with wood or steel/cast iron spiffing up and share your wisdom or ask questions or just post up some of your favorite spiffed up items which there have been many on this thread.

Looking for help to try to identify the Parker vise. I assume it is either a 6" or larger vise due to the the two screws holding the retaining collar in place. What is puzzling to me is the placement of or lack of centering of the U.S.A. Every one i have seen the U.S.A is directly centered beneath the C.T. I do not have a picture of the reverse side that would denote what model it is. Any help would be appreciated.
