I agree, most likely a lunch box baby

The seller is from Gilberts IL, which is adjacent to where the current Wiltons are machined (Elgin IL). I agree it is very conceivable that a current Wilton employee got hold of that baby......

I would ask the seller about it if I was going to bid. :dunno:

I've been keeping an eye out for vises for a while and seen nothing...and then yesterday I committed to what looks to be a minty Craftsman 506–51811 (picking it up tomorrow). Today, I see a CL ad for a Reeds 104 1/2.

Question for you vise gurus - what would be a good price for a Reeds 104 1/2? It's a 4 hole mount model with the rounded front knob and looks to be in very good shape. It would be an 1 1/2 hour drive one way. I don't need it, but I love the Hollands/Reeds vises.

Not to belittle your Craftsman vise, they are fine vises but the Reed is one of the best vises you can get. It's a true vise that can take a serious beating and has a function built into it to accommodate wear (backlash). Reeds are very well made and it's also probably twice the size or more of the craftsman if they have the same jaw width. Does that Reed have a swivel base?

There's a beautiful Reed 104s for sale on craigs in Ronkonkoma, NY in excellent condition which is not too close to you but that is a really nice vise to have. There's someone selling two vises in Amsterdam, NY but there not as nice as the Reed above.

MB - the 5181 is a decent vise and at 41 lbs, not a lightweight, but the Reed 104-1/2 while having less 1/2" less jaw, and "only" 15 lbs heavier, is twice the vise. Its probably fixed base, but I have needed to use my swivel on my Parker maybe two-three times in >30 years of using it...

Easy solution: buy both... Many, if not most of us have multiple vises in use.

I have had five Reeds, have two left. A 404 1/2 R that will be passed down and a 203 R that I am restoring. It needed a new handle and some cleanup but a great little vise. Worked on quite a few vises over the last few years and Reeds are hard to beat when it comes to casting, durability, style and precision. If the price fits your budget and you want a great piece of equipment buy it.

I have a Reed 104 1/2R with the four bolt holes and flattened spindle and it's a very, very nice vise. It's on my "not for sale list" of 4-5 vises if that means anything. I got it for $100 and was happy to pay it. I'm not sure how it was used, but the jaw serrations are as sharp as can be and the whole vise is super tight with little play anywhere, but still extremely smooth operating.

Yep, love love love my transition Reed 104 1/2 R, also on my not for sale list. Feel like I stole it at $45, after restoring (it was my first Reed) and seeing the amazing quality, easily would have paid $100 or more.tapatalk_1475195885573.jpgtapatalk_1475195902037.jpg

Thanks for all the suggestions!!!

Fretters: That main nut is also stuck in place.

Topop101: Found your link on how you pulled a pin out of another old Prentiss with pics!!!

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?p=5686892&highlight=topop101#post5686892

I also saw a reply underneath Topop101 in the Vise REpair 101 forum by CwazyWabbit in post 2917 that might work with a stuck nut and with tools I have on hand.

Knew I was under thinking this and thanks for all the great suggestions!!!

Mike

Got an early Christmas present, as the stuck pin in the dynamic jaw of the Prentiss 22 has now been extracted.

Used a bridge clamp with a punch bit in hole underneath while using a large socket over the pin on top.

Tried method first on Sunday. Not successful, but after finished put in some vinegar in hole underneath pin and let it sit.

Tried Tues and with same results, so again vinegar in hole after finished and let it sit.

Today (Wed), and before started, removed vinegar and put in some PB Blaster in hole and clamped it all up. Used cheater bar on bridge clamp handle and eventually heard a nice pop.

Of course the dynamic jaw without the pin was still stuck solid, but with some hammering and going back to using bridge clamp, I've moved the dynamic jaw about a 1/2" inch so far.

Mike

Looks a little, edit: well worn in but I don't notice any big damage, seller is asking $50 with the stand, I think it's worth taking a look
Anybody have more info about these?

Cheers

The Prentiss 94 actually looks pretty good to me ... no cracked slide and has a stand with a 1/2" plate for $50? Esp if this will be a user, go get that!

i had to throw my parker 276 rear swiveler body in bucket of contaminated diesel for a couple months to get it to move fractional, then worked it back forth little more each day. they're machined very close. diesel travels good thru rusted seized stuff. good luck.

There are two different stands in those Prentiss photos, are there two different vises?

Edit yes two different vises, one has horizontal lettering on the static jaw the other has vertical!

All my vises are for sale. Reed's are my Favorite and a Craftsman Reed is even better. So I overprice my keepers so no one buys them. My Reed 206 is $2000 firm and my Reed 1C is $1000 firm. My Craftsman Reed 5186 is $1500.

Blue,When I read (''ALL MY VISES ARE FOR SALE"), I immediately was going to scold you and make you feel real bad.---But I read a little further and you redeemed yourself.---I guess if someone was to pay those prices, I couldn't fault you.---I have a 206 and a 208 and I'd be afraid to even do what you did, price them at all.---Someone might call my bluff.---As you know, just like many vise pundits on here, Reeds are my favorite bar none.---I guess Hollands, and Starretts, are second, and third covers a lot of really fine brands to.---You-all know what they are.

My NOS Wil-Burt Versa Vise - Columbian Gyro Vise accessories arrived today!

I ran across these a few days ago while doing some research on these vises, apparently this woodworker supply house used to sell Versa Vises and found some leftover accessories. I believe these were made toward the end of production.

The four bases have the same part number as my earlier original Columbian Gyro vises 4-1001-2 however as you can see buy the picture comparing the new and old the underneath has more material in the center on the new one. What you can't tell by the pictures is the 3 mounting legs are slightly thicker too, 10.577 mm on the new one compared to 9.73 mm on the old one.

The screw on clamp mount has 4-1058-0 cast in it and as you can see in the pictures only has a few spots of paint rubbed off from shelf life.

I think it looks really clean overall.. There's too many hammer/saw marks but nothing that looks like it was abused.. I'm excited, it's a really good looking vise, and my first Wilton! .. Other than having to deal with that seller, I'm happy with the purchase, I was really pushing for 160 and ended up giving 180 for it.. Much more than I would have but I'm betting on the word of gj'ers that this has some value.. Depending on how well it cleans up I'll use it or keep it stored, I have to many to pick from to pick a user now haha

Cheers fellas

If bluebolt has a Reed 206 and asking $2000 what sky high price should I ask for my double swiveller Reed 406? It is an unwieldy monster that I initially intended to flip but once I get the pin free things may change.

More than a few are asking about it.

Hiboy:
You got a great vise for a fair price. A man never forgets his first Wilton.
