My first proper vise arrived today, I bought it off CL out of Wyoming. Its an Athol 614 thats seen some use over the years. I need to figure out how to clean it up and get it some use. I'm guessing its a post 1930 build based on what I read on mivise.com but I don't know for sure.

I cannot see the pic but I have a 613 614 and a 624 and I really like them exstreamly sturdy. Casting can be ruff but the slide and static tollorence are very tight

Cajun: did we forget to give you the Vice for Vises pledge or did you forget to read the thread with with more than a few WARNINGS VISES ARE ADDICTIVE?

you are picking up ones that i'm sure others here would like to own so you'll be ok even if you never see another benji in your wallet that isn't already spent for the next vise or tool purchase.

thanks for posting the date stamp too.

NNNNN: did you post your pictures via Imgur or another online service? i can't see them on my laptop. anybody else have that issue?

VA: i have to ask you even though i know I THINK I KNOW the answer. is vise hunting maybe more fun than almost anything else you like to do?

ALL: have a great weekend and i'm moving my "LITTLE CABINET HOME" next week (if i can). it's part of the GETTING ORGANIZED effort and i'm still trying to cure FSD (flat surface disease)

Oldie: not to question your post, but how are you sure that the 8 inch vice Z3 is looking at is a BISON? as Mark said there have been some Bison copies found since your Ebay auction that we might have thought were Bison

All,
I've never seen a Bison bench vise, 1250 series or other bench vise, that had larger than 150mm (6"). Please show pictures if I'm wrong.

Yeah, they seem to be coming in faster than I can work on them :dunno:
I don't have the speed you speedsters like jedi chris (g-man) and others do, but I am trying to "limit" my expenditures to Wilti's stamped Chicago only so that tightens up my "black hole of spending" a lil more...my only question is: How do you guys explain collecting vises to your Brides or S.O.? Mine looks at me like I have lost it (again!) cause this ain't my 1st rodeo of collecting things...

CAJUN: OK (ALMOST) ROOKIE HERE'S ANOTHER TIP YOU MIGHT WANT TO TAKE SO YOU CAN STAY MARRIED AND HAVE A FEW TOOLS AND VISES

1) don't put more than 3 or 6 vises in easy sight? most of us have already made this mistake and learned the hard way
2) stuff them everywhere behind boxes and other STUFF
3) get a storage unit with cabinets so in case she is there and is peaking inside she might not see more than a few.
4) get a second or third income
5) take your wife out on date night once a week or at least 2 times a month!!

Here is my Reed 324 1/2 as I bought it. Found it through Craigslist but it wasn't advertised, I went to look at a belt grinder and came home with this instead.

Just got back from a 4 hour round trip to pick up a Emmert 6a Universal machinist vise. I probably payed retail price but Im going to enjoy this vise for a while and will do a restoration clean up on it in the future. I payed $450 offered less but didn't want to leave empty handed. The seller wasn't a collector but I could tell he appreciated old iron.
Back to the vise it's complete besides the extra jaws and the detent on top for the jaw rotation.

Finding Chicago Wiltons is easy....you just need a Wilton magnet :D

This would look particularly nice next to that 1740....

Finished restoring a Prentiss 354-1/2 Combination vise, Yes CrotalusAtrox pipe jaws are expensive, I have over 3 hours in making these and another 2 hours fitting them to this Prentiss. Prentiss had issues aligning the two pipe jaw pockets to each other and I did not catch it before building this set. I should make another set but these will work fine. I can't remember to many pipe jaw Prentiss vises but I could be wrong.

This one came from the Golden Pile so it needed some work since I was the second in line and got all the leftovers.

<a href="https://visejaws.smugmug.com/Prentiss-Vises/i-33LcLzd/A"><img src="https://photos.smugmug.com/Prentiss-Vises/i-33LcLzd/0/M/Prentiss%20354-500-M.jpg" alt=""></a>

Gobs of hours repairing this vise, new over size handle, new jaws, has a reworked Dynamic spindle pocket and I added a bronze washer to take up the gap (1/4 inch thick). The swivel base came from a GJ member. I did not want to repair the broken tab. Replaced the collar that is held in by a 7/8 snap ring. Tightened up the backlash to less then a 1/4 turn.

<a href="https://visejaws.smugmug.com/Prentiss-Vises/i-8kmfJcF/A"><img src="https://photos.smugmug.com/Prentiss-Vises/i-8kmfJcF/0/M/Restoring%20Prentiss%20354-500%20%2812%29-M.jpg" alt=""></a>

Original wrench was cast a little sloppy but works well, no way to fix that. The hammer marks show that the vise has seen some action. The sides of the jaws towers were chewed up so much that I had to build them back with weld. All these Golden Pile vises are great practice for me, so when a rare vise comes in for repair I have a good idea what works.

<a href="https://visejaws.smugmug.com/Prentiss-Vises/i-Vbbfk5R/A"><img src="https://photos.smugmug.com/Prentiss-Vises/i-Vbbfk5R/0/M/Restoring%20Prentiss%20354-500%20%2815%29-M.jpg" alt=""></a>

Painted with Rust-Oleum Hammered Silver. I kind of like it. Looks much better in person.

<a href="https://visejaws.smugmug.com/Prentiss-Vises/i-sXvXf8r/A"><img src="https://photos.smugmug.com/Prentiss-Vises/i-sXvXf8r/0/M/Restoring%20Prentiss%20354-500%20%2814%29-M.jpg" alt=""></a>

Gotta show a pic of the jaws.

<a href="https://visejaws.smugmug.com/Prentiss-Vises/i-tKMZk7d/A"><img src="https://photos.smugmug.com/Prentiss-Vises/i-tKMZk7d/0/M/Prentiss%20354-500%20%2812%29-M.jpg" alt=""></a>

This is the second Prentiss I have restored and to tell the truth their quality of manufacturing dropped a couple notches in my mind. The Reeds, Starrett and Hollands to me are built better and rank higher. Both Prentiss restores had issues with the jaw accuracy and needed adjustment's. Both vises needed the screw holes slotted and issues on the boss area that aligns the jaws.

I would LOVE one of those EMMERTS too, Big Time!
Can you find a post where someone has the two original pivoting jaws for the two posts?
I don't recall...

Nice vise Rusty, I would love to get my hands on a Emmert in as good of shape as yours. What is the two round bosses used for? Is there suppose to be a set of jaws made to slip over to grab angled parts.

G-Man nice work on that Wilton and enjoy your website.

CrotalusAtrox Nice Morgan, need more pic's of your work and a view of the jaw faces. Got this thing about jaw faces.

That's what I'm talking about, Kevin.
They rarely have them...
If you can make a set of those, I will buy a 6A, ASAP!!!

Take care, Sir!
Mike

EDIT: Don't get me wrong, I KNOW you can make them, either through an example, or your own engineering, no offense intended!
Thank you, Kevin.

The round jaws can be used to hold tubing and the jaws that originally came on them could hold tapered objects or small round stock. Here is a picture showing the extra jaws on the vise in a advertisement.

Here's an oddball vise for me that I ended up winning at auction this week. It's a quick release vise made in England by Record but, it's all plastic. Honestly I did not read the auction description well enough or probably would never have bid on it. All I saw were the words "Record Vise" and "Quick Release" and immediately tossed the minimum $5 bid on it. Later I came back and realized it was plastic and hoped someone would out bid me but no luck so I end up with a oddball plastic vise that I'm not sure what I'll do with it yet. I guess everyone else read the ad better than me.

Rusty, thanks for the catalog page, gonna store the image so I can make Mike a set of jaws for his.

Mike pick one up and I'll treat ya to a set of jaws if you buy the steel.

Thanks cajun.

Love those Morgan jaws CrotalusAtrox, look how clean they are and all the surface area on the Morgan jaw faces. Again those pricey jaws sure are needed on your Morgan. They will fill that void, vises without pipe jaws look naked. Home made pipe jaws will work even without the teeth, the slots in the vise that capture the pipe jaws are a nominal thickness and pipe jaws without teeth are like having a set of smooth jaws and they will hold any bar or pipe you clamp down on. just a thought.

CA: other than all the pipe jaws being collected by aliens and put in area 51 here are maybe couple reasons i can think of that owners would have taken them out.

1) maybe the pipe jaws were in the way for some projects so removed to create more of a COACHMAKER'S type jaw for either wood or other material that you wouldn't want pipe jaw marks on

2) i wasn't alive during WWI or WWII, but wasn't there some sort of incentive to donate or sell anything you had made out of metal? i know England lost a TON of it's old iron that was melted down to make bullets, tanks and airplanes and such for the war efforts there.

3) could have broken, but highly doubt that

Well done on the Morgan and the old jaws look like new!!

Zoomie: if i owned one of those Emmerts i'd email or PM you, but sadly i've yet to see one in person. I have a rusty bigger Pattern maker Emmert and that think isn't heavier than my Reed 4c, but i might be bigger.

I appreciate it, SIR! I've always hesitated on those due to the missing jaws, now I wish I had bought them all!:lol_hitti

I have 3 different of the EMMERT patternmakers vises all "complete" with the tilt mechanism, plus several "spare parts". I would love to eventually have the complete set and mount them all to one of my bowling lanes and use it as a table in the house.

If MR. SCOTT wants a challenge... :lol_hitti
He should start reproducing these parts! I will send him one of the EMMERT Patternmakers "main nuts" or "mounting brackets" (or any other part he wants!) and he will be a viral sensation and an eBay millionaire !

Take care Friends!
