Amen!

And I must add this. A vise mounted on a workbench is good and useful. But a vise mounted on a stand, any stand will do, is really functional and perfect!

If it's secured to the ground, then yes.

I picked up a big Reed MFG Co vice a year ago from a silent auction up at my work to the employees. Surprised I picked it up for only $50. It's nice & heavy, also picked up the table with 1" steel top for $80. It will all be going up to my new pole barn shop in the next week or so.

Not sure of the Reed vices but it was cheap enough & it's a nice heavy piece.

I think Reeds are the toughest and best vises to have in a shop that actually needs a vise thats gonna hold up and not just sit there and look pretty. $50 is a good buy

The RR stands are so heavy that securing it to the ground is not terrible necessary. I have some that are and some that are not.

It's best and a safe practice to secure it but they don't move real easily

I just knew I needed a bigger vice than my china made $40 lightweight one. They had 2 Wiltons, which I have heard of as a good vice, but they had the Wiltons with turntable base & I've never had good luck with the cheap turn style ones & didn't know about the Wilton's. I figured an old made in USA one with the fixed base would work best so I went for the Reed. It's really taken some abuse & works great. I need to make some wooden jaw inserts for it at some point.

Thanks oldie for the good words. First I got's to see a pic of the 5199 vise you talking about that you want built. You got one.

There isn't a 5199...

It came from fevered imagination...

My imagination is so fevered, I just gave it a swivelin' jaw...

I figured we could scale up a 5198 by about 25%, we'd be in with a shout...

6" jaws, swivelin' rear jaw, solid steel...

I'm guessing it would weigh in excess of 180 pounds...A 1 1/4" main screw...

Ain't delusions fun!!!!

I expect it would require some serious software, and a 5 axis mill...

'Tis an interesting concept...

Why not a 5169? Would be pretty close to 400.

Ok on to my last topic for tonight (I think)

M K & T = Missouri Kansas and Texas......Railroad

I'm trying, almost in a financially irresponsible way, to buy this 7" vise! It came out of the rail yard that the fellows great grandad and grandad worked in so the sentimental attachment is borderline impenetrable (thus far)......

Please pray that the fellow makes the right decision and decides to sell it to me!!

Mine mine mine mine mine.....like a spoiled little brat! I'll stomp my feet and all that silliness until I get it!

You are correct it is missing the rear mounting tab but believe it or not the guy actually has the piece on his workbench. If I get it I will weld it back on no problem at all.

The jaws are L yes

I am still trying to study your collection, and I know there are people "out there" that watch "us" and "laugh" at our collections, not in a condescendingly way, just like most of us are somewhat "amateurish" (not in a bad way, they've just been doing it for years longer "we have"), privacy is a privilege we Americans ENJOY and I respect everyone's.
I am grateful that you decided to show us your stuff.
I have, what I consider a "decent collection". there are several MEMBERS on here that have spectacular collections, that I envy (YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE! A-HOLES >VA<, LOL!)
You've got one of the finest collections I've seen, and I know some private collectors too...

Well done Sir, I really dig your stuff!
Mike

I would love to talk anvil and power hammers someday too!

Take Care!
