Did a pick after I got home from Newport. Found this 150mm (6") York. Then i found this repaired 4" Reed. On a side note got this old school Cambell Hausfeld 26 gal compressor (115 v single phase 2 hp) and cast iron legs $200 for everything.

Headed out with the Wilton magnet again today. Turned up a 1977 vintage 9450, and a Wilton pattern maker's vise I know nothing about and it even managed a Reed 204 for good measure!

The 9450 is in great shape, but was missing one swivel lock and a dust cap...I think I have a spare of each in the parts box.

The Reed is in really nice shape, but the collar on the screw is broken, so you can't open it with the handle, and the slide is stuck from sitting/rusting so long. I've got Kroil working on it now.

The guy was super nice and actually threw in the pattern maker's vise for free...I know zippy about them, so I'm going to start a thread on it.

ALL: the welds on that $2,000 jeweler's vise aren't even as nice as the welds on my daughter's WEDDING CHAIR. it's also Funky and looks like not many options for using it. the guy did make a nice handle for it though.

GMAN: other than the temporary handle on the Wilton Pattern maker those three vises look like in pretty decent shape (AGAIN).

did i ever mention to you that you live in the REAL VISE HEAVEN? :D

ALL: so a new member NCBOAT asked me for some help and advice on a 150 pound 6 inch jaw with STUDEBAKER's name on it. He didn't end up buying it at the auction even though giving it a good try and price went north of $1300.

anybody buy it? also any information on who made it or it's history?

Here is my 20 dollar screw up for the week. Saw an add for a steel bench on CL for 100 with this and a pipe vise. THe add had been up for a few weeks so I shot the guy a 20 dollar offer on this. Its far worse than it looked in the pictures. Broken and welded dynamic jaw and some small chips out of the sides of the jaw. Didn't walk away, maybe should have.

At a price point of 200 and below would it be better to buy a Wilton or reed or another vise brand. Swivel would be nice but not needed it needs to be the most durable as I don't want to buy again.

Well all's fair I suppose.---You out sniped me on the rotating head bicycle vice.---I don't know weather you are a better shot or just faster on the draw, but I still loose sleep over that one.:D

Ya know, I've been thinking about that, and I love that bicycle vise, top 5 in my collection, for sure, but...

That one weird "hot cut vise" (or whatever it is), is still my most prized vise "possession"...

Take care, Sir!
Mike

EDIT: No I don't have pics on my CPU, but it's on here, somewhere...

Oh and this "front swivel jaw" is up there too...

JW: don't beat yourself up too bad. with all the vises you find and buy that Rock Island made Craftsman looks like the swivel base and those parts are ok, screw and maybe the vise nut ok, removeable jaws look ok so all in all i'd have paid $20 and been OK.

JO: depends on which versions of each vise. some Wiltons are **** or let's say not nearly the vise that their bullet and tradesman line are. ANY OLD REED if it's not cracked, broken or welded will last another 100 years most likely if you don't beat on it with a sledgehammer or use it as a press. any other questions? if you were closer i'd probably have something for you to choose from with a 4 or 4.5 inch wide jaw that would work great for almost any guy's shop except for a few guys on this thread. a 6 incher of either brand might cost a bit more, but they are usually double in size for the older ones (pre 1970's).

ALL: pretty decent price for a rebranded MORGAN isn't it? i have to say i liked it when i first saw it and i still like it, but since i don't NEED a vise and neither does NC it probably went to a guy that has a pristine Studebaker in his garage.

For $200 you could buy 4 or 5 vises, depends on size and condition.

Wilton carry a very high resale value so right there you should get better bang for your buck with Reed. Also depends on models; a Wilton Tradesman is a nice vise, but nowhere near a Wilton machinists vise, or C series combo vise.

I like Wilton but don't love them (well I do kind love their C series). If you want good value along with the toughest SOB vise possible, get a Reed.....a Hollands or Athol would be there also, but harder to find than Reeds.

Reed has had very few models over the years, a hard to find workshop vise, 2 versions of combo vises (the original 30 series & the C series), and their ubiquitous machinist vise (100 & 200 series) which went through a couple of revisions, but was always tough as nails.

Like all the brands, the had less common coach makers and filers vises, but if you get either one of their machinists or C series, you should be set for life and then some.

Of course getting good condition and the right size, at the right price trumps all. If the "deal" is for a Parker, Morgan, Columbian, Prentiss (without Prentiss "famous slide cracks" Desmond Stephens and a couple of other renowned old brands found throughout this thread, go for it.

Good luck

Generally speaking, you're going to pay more for a Wilton of equivalent size than any other brand. Wilton isn't known for having the most durable swivel base, but it doesn't seem to be much of an issue until you get into the 5" and larger models.

Parker probably made the beefiest swivel base, but some others aren't far behind.

If you skip the swivel base you will get a larger, more durable vise for the same money, no doubt about it. People think they want/need a swivel base and often they really don't.

$200 should buy you a pretty stout fixed base vise if you put a little effort into finding one.

I need to snap some better pictures now that the vise is mounted, but here is my late grandfather's Columbian 604 that I restored over the weekend.

Any idea who the maker on this vise is? The only marking is a b3307 stamped on the base. I don't know the jaw size at the moment.

Does the lack of a split in the tail preclude Prentiss?

Let's see, who makes the swivel jaw models... Prentiss, Reed, Columbian, Parker, Hollands...

BENT: that vise is definitely and oldie. it's had a hard life that is for certain. the swivel push pin is missing and it looks like maybe one or two of the mounting feet were broken or cracked and have been welded. the handle could be original as could be the bolt for a swivel jaw pin and if they are i'm guessing this vise was made in the late 1800's.

is it yours? any more pictures from all sides and underneath it?

SHIFT: not all Prentiss vises were beat on, but they did have a weak spot didn't they? have you posted up your HOLLAND'S 43.5 here cause i saw it on the other thread and i think we need more pictures of it?

The vise isn't mine, I had someone contact me offering to sell it. It was her 80 yr old dads and he got it long ago from his dad, so I really don't know the history. By talking to the daughter though, it sounds like the price is going to be too high to be practical. I certainly didn't want to pass without finding out some details. I saw the swivel locking mech was broken and it's obviously been used and abused.
