SONO: great post and do you just heat up the cast vise before melting the beeswax on with your propane torch or do you just hit the chunk of beeswax with the torch and let it melt into a liquid. I would think it works similar to BLO, but I'm willing to listen.

The Morgan Star vise looks almost exactly identical to my Columbian. My Columbian is an old one, I wonder if there was some manufacturer sharing. Who knows!

As far the beeswax, I apply the beeswax in two ways:
1. By fanning the torch across the cast iron to limit localized heating, heat the casting and then occasionally touch the bar of beeswax to the casting, applying heat until the beeswax melts upon contact with the cast iron. This should be around 160 degrees, so there's no risk of damage to the vise components.

2. For difficult to reach areas, heat the beeswax bar with the torch directly and let it drip on the casting. Then take the torch to the drippings on the castings. The heat will push the melted beeswax around the casting and wick into tight spots like penetrating oil.

Sounds like sonos and I are on the same page as far as using heat to optimize the penetration of surface treatments be it beeswax or BLO. I like the heat gun for heating to better apply uniform heat. As an added benefit, it temporarily warms your work space.

Teen:
It looks like you and I are setting the current price for old pipe vises. Ten Bucks is the going rate!

Have y'all ever tried renaissance wax? I like that original patina, in my opinion there is not a better option!

Teen,

You did good on that pipe vise. I usually get 35$ for one like that if I just sell it as-is. If I can, I like to restore them and sell them with a restored vise as a set.

As far as the age, I'd say it's as old as 1914.

JOE: since you buy so many vises does the hunt for them still excite you? any updated pictures of your HOARD of VISES or have you been selling them as fast as you buy them?

Of course I still get excited! I really like finding vises I've never seen before. I dont buy Wiltons anymore unless they are cheap.

Ive been in a real acquisition mode the last two months and I'm running out of room...again! Bought a fully restored Yost 33c just 2 days ago.

Wish it would warm up so I could work in the shop. Need to move stuff out.

Have a look at the Sculpt nouveau web page. I use their products often. They are great but you must follow the directions (something I'm not all that great at doing)

So how long does the tour last? Are there gonna be vendors there selling hotdogs too?

Last week I went of to a garage sale, where the long time residents of a large house and workshop were relocated to a small house. So everything was forsale. Sadly I got late notice of the sale and when I got there, the only think of interest was the bench vise.

The vise is a Wilton 745 (5" jaws) mechanics vise relabeled for Mac Tools (Washington Court House, Ohio). This has to be one of the more grease and dirt covered vises I have run into lately. On a good note, there is no large amounts of rust and all the screws were easy to loosen.

The only problems with the vise is the bent and scarred spindle handle and one missing/one damaged pipe jaw. The handle I think can bend straight enough to be visually acceptable. Original Wilton pipe jaws seem to be plentiful so I will pick up a set.

All the screws appear to be 1/4-20 threads. The main casting number is 111147. Any thoughts on what vintage and the country of origin for this vise?

Overall it should clean up pretty well. I have been looking for an reasonable quality vise that I could put on an welded grinder stand. I want to be able to wheel it outside and used as required without worrying about the finish or diminishing the collector value. For $20 + the cost of pipe jaws this should fit my needs.

Though thinking out it, I am about to clean off all the dirt and oil that has protected it all these years, so I can add more lubricant to keep it from rusting in the future. I just can't stand a really dirty vise.

This is a 7" Merrill vise I have. I'll provide better pictures later. However, I'm searching for one of their 8" vises. A buddy of mine just procured a life long collection of vises from another fellow and included in that purchase was an 8" Merrill. Of course I fell in love and would like to own one. Does anyone have one that may possibly be available?

TS: looks like a Wilton vise made for Mac Tools. most likely 70's or 80's and from the looks of the swivel base made in China, but might be Taiwan. could be made in USA, but i really doubt it.

TJ: there is a similar Parker near me with the wrench for $100 that nobody has picked up yet and some members are on other threads complaining about not finding a good vise in my area. i'd buy it, but i'm trying to get down to 40 or 50 and every time i sell two or three i buy three or four so it might take me a while.

cheers

Hey, I hear that vintage pizza boxes are gaining interest with the hipster crowd.
They can be framed and displayed as retro eclectic modern art.
Especially if they have interesting graphics and patina.
The grease stains can be used as a Rorschach parlor game at gluten free organic wine and cheese tasting parties.
You can even use a blindfold and play a guess the topping by odor game.
There's a lot of value for money in collecting vintage pizza boxes.

(Oops, I forgot to use the word "rare" in my diatribe)
