Picked up a Prentiss Bulldog 264. Vise is in decent shape with no damage or welds.

I saw that listing (not very far from me) and noticed it was removed pretty quickly. I have a 264 already so I wasn't looking to buy it myself. Can't say I'm surprised to see that someone on here snagged it. The smooth jaws are an interesting rarity and look factory or very precisely crafted. Mine has the typical serrated jaws. Overall similar condition, but mine does have some saw marks on top of the dynamic jaw. I hope you really enjoy yours.

Here's a picture of mine as found. Unfortunately i haven't had a chance to do much with it yet because of my current living situation, but hopefully soon I will be able to post it again cleaned up and mounted.

Of course there's room to walk in his shop. You put one foot on this vise, then the other foot on that vise, then step onto the anvil, then over to ...................... :lol_hitti

I think the term Hoarding has gotten a bad rap, the Hunt brothers were hoarding silver back in 1979-80 who wouldn't want to hoard that shinny stuff. Now if your hoarding cat turds you probably need to get help. Vise's if I had the space and money I would be hoarding vises anvils drill press guns etc etc. Keep up the hoarding Vise's and keep sending the vise ****

Hoarding is a harsh term. My shop is a shelter for orphan tools. I save them from rust and abuse, provide them a warm dry spot to be, and then clean them up so they can go back to work. So "hoarding" is a little harsh; "Rehabilitation enterprise" is a kinder term. :bounce:

I finally got around to making my first vise handle. I had some 1" ball bearings that I was going to use but killed 3 center drills and gave up on that not sure what the material is, I could cut it with carbide tooling but drilling into it was impossible with the bits I had atleast (tried HSS, & HSS Cobalt) I don't have any carbide drills. Anyways I used a piece of 1" stainless, center drilled, turned down just enough to true up and make sure my center hole was perfect. Turned out ok. I'd rather have the ball bearings but this is functional atleast. The rod is 1/2 stainless

Very nice work on that handle. You can make one for me anytime!
But have you ever hurt your hand by letting a handle slip down and pinch your thumb between the handle end and the nose of a vise?
I bet I am not the only one to experience that event.
Rubber washers will add protection if you intend to use that vise.
Just my $.02

JimReed:
I agree with your redefining the often maligned term "hoarding"
EXCELLENT!
(BTW, I only have 30 vises). But before joining GJ I just had 2

Good job on the handle Brorex. I would be very happy if I could make one half as good.

Very nice vise, and solid handle to go with it!

Shift: i thought you only had 12 vises? i think it's time for a new family photo when you get the Reed 406 up and dusted?

BRO
: i have yet to buy finger savers, but i can guarantee you that once you pinch your finger you'll wish you had. some of the guys buy colored O rings that i think are made for trucks, but there are lots of options.

nice work and love the pictures of it on the lathe!!

ALL: i probably won't ever have as many vises as VISES and a few other guys, but i don't know if i'll ever get down to 30 again either. i just need to keep most of them out of the easy site of my bride (management) and all is good.

Would this be a bench vise or a vise/bench?

I agree with you.
Like many other things, the concept of having a LOT of vises, or even "too many" vises, is a relative term.

Bcom:
Dont get too excited until you clear up a common misconception held by many sellers that an 8 inch vise means that it can open up to grip something that is 8 inches in size.

Had one of my new contacts come by with these two beauties...an early Parker 271 1/2 and a Parker 973 1/2. Very happy with both. Just look at that condition!

Almost every 271-272 I've found has had the back of the static, behind the swivel jaw, broken off.

I'm thinking of just dipping them and then BLO and baking them. they are so pristine.

Bought a new (to me) iMac, the Mini couldn't be recovered, but still use the iPad most of the time.
Check back a few pages, I scored a nice (once it's cleaned up) Reed 102-1/2 off eBay recently and if you check out my Projects thread, you'll see I finally got that Speedaire wired and running.
Otherwise, I haven't had much time to spend in the shop lately.

Edit :
I forgot how fast this thread moves. It was almost 30 pages ago. Check out post #'s :

Last one i saw was $500 in fair condition about 7 years back. I passed. Today there is even more interest so that price is probably reasonable.

Most common bearing material is UNS 52100 with a Rockwell hardness on the order of HRC 60. Was (a long time ago) a bearing design and application engineer for what is now a division of Timken.

A nice bearing materials reference table is in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ball_(bearing)) (near the bottom of the page) if anyone's interested.

ALL: if i had a shop like VISES or a house full of vises like ZOOMIE does i'd post up a few more vises, but almost as soon as i buy them they disappear into a corner or shelf or under a bench.

anyway my ROCK ISLAND MAGNET i've been trying to get from GMAN finally came home and it even came with a REED one attached to it.

here's the Rock Island 574 4 inch and it came home with a REED 204. surprisingly i think the Rock weighs a good 15 or 20 pounds more than the REED does and i had to pay more for the REED.

I saw that on Craigslist for $85. You must have paid that since it wasn't even listed 2 days?

I like the smooth jaws. I'm just going to clean this up and oil it. I drove too far for it but I really wanted it.

I just want a magnet.

The big vises will elude me for a while. I picked up this Rock Island 72 today. I think this will be my first flip.
