Bought 6 vises today. Wilton C1, 5" prentiss fixed base, 5" athol swivel base, 5" Athol quick release, 1" Athol clamp on, 5.25" prentiss 21 swivel jaw, Parker 23x. Pd $405 for all 6 of the vises.

Gray vise is the Athol and what I assume is a quick release...i got out of there as fast as possibe before the seller changed his mind.

Also bought a small compressor and a Hunter 6x12 surface grinder in great shape for 150.
I really wish I could find 1 vise for sale. Let alone 6 from the same person. I need to move to a more tool friendly place.
That surface grinder is amazing. Wow nice

Here's another one that I restored yesterday. It's a 4 1/2" Wilton No 4 made in 1946. I'm not real happy with the color. I used Rustoleum Hammered Red and it's way more burgundy than I expected.

So you're the one. I was caller #2 on that one. It was in my own backyard so to speak. I'm glad to see someone here get it.

It came to a good home. Going to fully restore it and put it into service. I think 1755 to C3 will fit every need I'll ever have so no more vise buying competition from me unless a baby comes up haha.

Well, jeeze, you're making me blush! If you like that you'll probably like the stuff on the Vise Manufacturer' thread. Here's a link: http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=283430&highlight=vise+manufacturers&page=3

You should be able to add a lot of information to it yourself.

Here's my Walworth - most of it anyway. It needs a handle.

I've got a couple of these Walworth vises. It kinda reminds me of the general fire extinguisher company vise

ALL: speaking of LOW ON VISE FUNDS it might be a while before i can afford a BIG UN now.

i don't know how many of you have daughters, but i just finished with my daughter's wedding and now have a new son in law that is a CAPTAIN IN THE ARMY. here's a picture of my new in laws and the new bride and groom.

i know a few of you don't like when i (we) post up a pictures that are not vises, but I prefer these to YOU **** posts any F'N day of the week, month or year.

cheers all and this is the last picture i'll post here and more are in my thread with the link in my sig line. yes that' my little girl in the wedding chair i built instead of her wheelchair. you can also post up comments about me or my daughter's wedding over on the wedding chair thread if you would unless you have something else vise related while you are saying something. thank you

the venue was in downtown Seattle and built in 1904 (i think) just after the town burnt down in 1899 after a melting pot caught the entire wood town on fire. sorry not sure on the dates but there should have been a vise holding that burning pot and Seattle would maybe still have some of the old wood buildings.

Looks a lipstick color!

That No. 4 on the base shows up on several Wilton's from that era, I have a 5" one with it on there.

I did indeed, I also got one in it's original (albeit rather dirty clothes) :)

I'll try to sort out a family picture as there are a few difference between the different ones I have.

I couldn't stand it and stripped it back down this morning. I decided to go with a light grey, similar to the original color. It's in the oven curing, and will get the letters re-painted this afternoon.

My favorite red for vises is Rustoleum Enamel Gloss Sunrise Red Spray Paint. If you find another vise that you want to paint red try it out.

I think the grey one is exactly the same as the one I have, which is near mint, I never like buying someone else's repaint job anyway. Did win a well used model F no size listed today for £20.50 inc post which is pretty good.

I enjoy seeing how many of us put our "projects" in our family oven, nothing like cooking food with all those wonderful smells of our shop :rocker:

I'm guessing that helps cure the paint faster? What temp and how long?

200 to 225, tops, HOWEVER: Don't:
  • Use a gas oven! Electric only!
  • Use your food oven (the paint is outgassing and will deposit inside the oven and you cook food in there at much higher temps, so could get into your food...!)

Find a remodel take out (usually free) and setup for shop use, for smaller parts use a toaster oven (thrift store?)

Or use heat lamps and carefully box in the parts. (Don't set the boxes on fire)

WRENCH & FMC: thanks for the well wishes!!

ALL: here's a shop oven i found and these are not always free or working, but if you have a vintage vise and vintage tools it's the little extra piece you need for the puzzle. great tool storage too!!

Anybody get a PM or know what happened to DAYID??

I know there was an Excel spreadsheet that had the Wilton dates stamped on the slide, not sure who managed it, maybe Bluebolt? Anyway I wanted to know, who can tell me or direct to where I could post a spreadsheet that can be viewed by others (hopefully not a site that charges)

FMC, You can actually do that with Google docs, but pay attention to what permissions you hand out as its easy to give it to the world... That used to be the default, but I think that as been fixed...

I think I'm going to have to find myself an electric range like the one Drive has pictured. I think I remember reading that Cassie(?) recommended using one with BLO.

here's the link to the thread.

Get a large electric smoker. Veeps and I paid around $100. Easy to manage the temp and cheap. I've used mine two years now.

I actually have a Bradley electric smoker that I don't use. I'm not sure if it will handle the Reed C3. I'll have to run out and measure. Man I'm glad I kept that when my BIL gave me his Big Green Egg.

It was their old 18" (large) BGE. I had to do some rehab to it and build a table for it. They buy things, break or soil them and buy new. They are always very kind to me when they throw out big ticket items. One man's trash is another man's treasure. The Bradley Smoker was theirs too.

Last week I picked up a clean 600 locally and before the day was out, I got an e-mail from someone looking for some "big American iron" in the form of a Wilton. He wanted it done in copper....so that's what he's getting!

It's going to be a user so I didn't try for a mirror finish on the jaw supports, etc...just nicely cleaned up. Some of the smearing you see on them is actually Fluid Film.

Can someone test this link and see if it works?
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1sHFRfY_DFXMz6bFeeYI7UKRpUd3aheAE86KBQRBGb9s/edit?usp=sharing

Should come up as an Excel Spreadsheet on Google docs with collected vise info. There are about 2200 entries and there should be filters at the top to select specifics....e.g....Prentiss, Stationary base, 6" jaw...etc.

It is a work in progress so there could be some errors, or many errors.

For now I just want to know if people have access and if it is functional.

Wish I'd gotten in on that when I had the chance. I've been keeping an eye out but no luck. My local TSC hasn't had any on clearance since.
