GMAN: not sure why you can't click on Mark's picture and not get full screen pictures cause i can. i click on the picture then click twice so maybe i didn't mention it might be 3 clicks. some member's posts DO NO ENLARGE so i'll give you that and most likely because they copied and pasted to their computer off another site and it wasn't an original.

anyway if PB raises their prices to stay online or if a member changes services all of the pictures are lost and pictures are a lot of what makes this BIG VISE THREAD what it is. also VA can still find almost anything and i think VA will tell you he has very little computer skills.

i'm hoping all ths time running around picking vises up, spiffing them up and then reselling for a little more in the same market you got those awesome deals in hasn't had an ill effect on your love for vises.

as i've told many many members and people vises are a great way to learn other skills, but i doubt you'll ever get rich or even eat well from the proceeds of buying them cheap and restoring them and reselling them for a profit.

you keep doing as you will with your pictures if that's the way you like to do it, but i changed from PB back to just downloading thumbnails via the Paperclip so if i die some day and my wife doesn't want to pay my PB account there will still be something maybe a few of you can enjoy besides my words that a lot of you don't read anyway.

cheers

Since folks are pointing out helpful posting critiques, I'm guessing you were addressing that post to me? It's helpful to use the quote function so that poster knows you were addressing them.

If someone really is worried about all these pictures they could take the time to save them and create an online gallery to host them and make sure they don't disappear.

You're also assuming this site will still exist in 5-10 years. Trust me, after years on forums, even the most popular now sometimes are gone in 5-10 years, or they wind up with hosting problems where the price gets unreasonable, or the host goes out of business. Guess what happens then? They have to migrate to a new host.

Frequently all of the content, including pictures is gone when that happens. Often the posts will be saved, but not the associated media since that's a different kind of data transfer, and it would cost money. Imagine transferring all of the image files on this site to another site...it would be a massive data dump and they normally won't do that. If the new host is willing/able to move the data, they charge for it....so the cost of moving to a new website depends somewhat on how much data has to be transferred.

Photobucket, as annoying as it is, is more likely to be around in 10 years than almost any forum, including this one.

I wasn't out to point the finger at you, just used you as an example, because of your vise magnet and the restores you do; your posts would lose all their impact without pics. Again, you and everyone else is free to do as they please.

One other thing, I have been part of a dozen other forums, I have never seen a forum that has the volume GJ has. Not even close, all those other forums combined do not have the traffic this forum has.

Of course anything can happen, I don't think GJ will disappear anytime soon.

Unfortunately, I have a crappy vise magnet. Monday evening I saw an for a Record #8 (8" non swibelin *******). I called and the lady said yes, we still have it. I said great, can I come by to see it and possibly purchase it. It was about 7:30 pm, she said, no, not possible tonight, but we will be available tomorrow from 9:30 am.

I call the next morning at 9:30am, sorry it is sold, the guy already picked it up :headscrat

But I am the one that called last night and you said starting at 9:30........sorry it's gone and hangs up :dunno:

Had I known, I gladly would have upped the ante, $50, even up to $100 if it was in great shape (the pic looked decent)

Easy come, easy go, there is ALWAYS another deal around the corner. That's the 2nd Record #8 I lost out on In the last few months.

Imho, hosting your own pictures is the safest way to go. All it takes is one forum server crash or change and all those pictures are gone. I've seen it happen.

When I click on that picture, and click on it again, it's still not full screen...even on my laptop.

It's also clicking twice instead of clicking zero times for me. When folks upload pictures here, I won't even click on them unless it's something I'm really interested in.

I'm on here using two different laptops, two different desk tops, a phone and two iPads and I rarely have a problem seeing pictures that folks have hosted on Photobucket.

The problems with pictures disappearing aren't normally because Photobucket did something. It's when folks delete them, move them to a different folder, or delete their account. I'm not a fan of Photobucket as a company, so I'm not defending them, just stating that picture loss is usually an error or ignorance on the part of the user.

Honestly, I don't really care much one way or the other. This thread has gotten to the point it's almost useless other than for general "wow, that's nice" sort of viewing. There's no reasonable way to search it, and after 50K posts, it's too long for folks to really go through it.

If it is so useless then why use it? Your attitude is so wonderful and uplifting! Wow!

Finally have time to start posting again...
No new vises, just numerous other things.
On the bright side I might have a line on a 6" English record

Welcome back! Sure you've been up to quite a bit. Is the Record one of the quick releases? My first and still one of my favorites.

Don't believe so, although I haven't seen it yet. Through a military connection I've been buying some surplus tooling from the Navy dockyards recently. Just the shop my friend works in probably has 2-300 4, 5, and 6" records
Anything that'd be leaving there has had a tough life and has something wrong, but projects are always fun

What's the jaw width on a No. 0?

I took note of this auction on eBay as I've bought a couple things from kgtools08 in the past. He's up the road from me. I'm surprised his No. 3 sold so fast at that price.

Wow that's a good number it brought. I wonder what the zero would be valued at. I have a couple no 3's and I thing a no. 7 but I'll need to double check that.

Very well made little vise.

Rock Island authorities: A question from my observations. I have noticed RI models with the name in a semi circle on the right side of the vise, and others have the name cast in parallel on the left side.

Is there a relationship between the year of production and these different script
locations/layout ? Does anyone have input as to which style is older or newer ?

Regards,
Shawn

I have a date stamped rock island on my bench, but I can't recall which style logo or what the date is. Not much of a sample size, but I can get you the information on one this morning

I'm not an authority on their history, but the curved style is older, and you'll note has cast-in jaws. The earliest I've seen in that style also have a raised, curved part just in front, and just behind the jaws...very distinctive styling. That went away over time.

The straight script style also has the Birtman Electric Company tag on it, and replaceable jaws, which means it's newer.

Birtman purchased RI in 1930 and then around 1957 Whirlpool purchased/merged with them, so the one with the tag should be between 1930 and 1957.

This thread (search here for "Rock Island History") has some info:

If it is so useless then why use it? Your attitude is so wonderful and uplifting! Wow!

First off, there's really no need for biting sarcasm like that. All that can lead to is people getting upset.

Second, you misquoted me and took my comment out of context. I didn't say it was completely useless.

Third, what I said is the truth. This thread is almost useless for anything other than "wow, that's nice" sort of viewing. It's simply too large to sort through or search effectively. So many posts are gone that even when you try a search you have to click many pages back and forth to find what you really wanted.

Lastly, since I have such a poor attitude I promise not to bother you with any more leads on big vises.
