Is there any proof that WD 40 is anything else than gasoline mixed with some additives to make people believe that the main ingredient is not gasoline?

A friend worked at a trucking company that decided to do a lubricant test. So they took the trailer rear door hinges and lubed them with a different brand per trailer, keeping records throughout the year. The trailer doors that had WD-40 used on the hinges were almost rusted off. They got rid of all their cans after that.

It is not gasoline based. I'm not saying it is a wonderful product, it is just not gasoline based. WD-40 MSDS

Fluid Film can be used for pretty much all of the same purposes and preforms much better.

I suppose I could see if my buddy could sneak a peak at the formula. He is in management at the one of the main canning plants of WD40. They get all the bulk ingredients and mix it there before canning.

Kerosene & light oil....

I like it for cleaning motorcycle chains, hand tools, chainsaws, old/faded plastic, removing sticker residue and light oiling.

Actually I want proof that it is not fairy dust mixed with unicorn farts.

Where did you come up with this? If you want proof that it is gasoline buy a few gallon cans, wait till your gas gauge is on empty then throw them in your daily driver and see what happens.

I also use WD-40 for cleaning. I've been doing some old rusty stuff lately after a wipe down and sometimes a lite brushing with something to get heavy stuff off I thien wipe with light oil. WD-40 will not prevent rust.

Also like how it cleans plastic handles.

Its good for taking off sticker glue, and dried out masking tape.

If you really want to know whats in it, send some to Blackstone or one of the other labs that analyze oil and find out.

WD-40 will not prevent rust.

Sure it will. Why wouldn't it?

I use it on tools - all of the time, where the chrome has chipped off, or they are exposed steel.

Use it on shovels, Picks etc.

If i use it, no problem. If I don't, they will quickly start developing surface rust.

Uh, who said it was a lubricant? Not me, although since it contain some type of "light oil", it does have some slight lubricating properties.

I put wd40 ion tools to "displace water", since moisture is the cause or rust.

I use it for some stuff but I use others for rust protection and lubrication. So a spray can of wd40 lasts me about 5 years.

I use WD-40. I live in Arizona, so it is a good enough product for here.
I use it to clean up my tools after work. However I do use breakfree on my cast iron table saw. It lasts longer. For door hinges I use Pam.
If I lived in a wetter area I would look for a more specialized product

Believe it or not I read some people use it for their joints. Supposedly assists in joint pain. But I believe the messaging it in is actually is what helps.

My grandfather was horribly burned in an office propane explosion in the early 80's. Wearing a polyester suit at the time which melted into his skin. His torso, hands and arms were mostly skin grafts.

He claimed WD-40 was the only thing that relieved the pain in his hands.
I think of him every time I smell it.

Miss him every day.

I work for at an auto supply in the 1960's and early 1970's. One of the salesmen claimed he sold WD-40 by the case to a small grocery store in a farming community. He said he was told the locals used it to rub on joints to relieve pain. Could be?

if you have a distributor and it is wet WD40 will get the engine, started and running again, by spraying it in the distributor cap and displacing the water,

and great for machining aluminum, and a bunch of other things, and will temporary lubricate, and help break things free, and to clean things.

This guy shows how to make your own WD-40 (something similar) on this video.

It seems like it "might" be about the same. He seems to be convinced that it works just as well.

BTW, some people seem to think WD works as catfish bait, so that's another miracle use of the product. Who knows.

While the ingredients in WD-40® Multi-Use Product are secret, we can tell you what it does NOT contain. WD-40® Multi-Use Product does not contain silicone, kerosene, water, graphite, or chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs).

During my life I have used a lot of WD40 and usually have a can in the workshop. It has been used to remove stuff like old weathered fasteners and loosen stuff up. Sometimes I use WD40 to break the beads on garden tractor tires and remove them from the rims. I like WD40 and also use various other lubricants as needed.

I read somewhere that the bulk of wd40 is fish oil. So that may be why it makes good fish bait.

I have heard the fish oil rumor also but here is what the people at WD40 have to say.

What a Fish story!

Myth: WD-40® contains fish oil.

Fact: Consumers have told us over the years that they have caught some of the biggest fish ever after protecting their fish hooks and lures with WD-40®. We believe this legend came from folks assuming that the product must contain fish oil since it appears to attract fish. Sorry Charlie®, it just ain’t so.

WD-40 Company has taken steps to respect and conserve the environment, and encourages its users to do the same. While WD-40® can be used to help protect fishing equipment from rust and corrosion, WD-40 Company does not recommend using WD-40® to attract fish.

Another usage is when you have 8 feet of muddy water flood through your valley ......... WD-40 is what you buy in the gallon cans to fill all your small engines until you have the time to clean them down.
I saved six machines that way.
