AF: it's hard to see in your picture if the jaws are in great shape and just missing the replaceable jaws, but it sounds like you say they are which is good enough for me.

here's some more pictures of that restored Rock Island 577 i sent you in case you didn't get all of them in my email.

good luck and looks like you are well on your way to having a 150 pound old USA made vise on your workbench soon.

DIF,
I got those in your email, and thanks for posting them here. My little android can't handle posting the group of photos. I love looking at that monster !

Do you prefer D, DIF or ?

Drives,
The original jaws are long gone, but the screw holes are all great (threads) and the jaw faces, edges and sides are all more than acceptable. My plan is to get a set of Kevin's jaws, have another friend build up the abused surfaces with inconel TIG (or whatever he determines appropriate ) and another friend will mill the jaw faces to perfectly mate the new inserts, and tune things up for a nice end product.

The welder friend I'm paying (it may be an hour or two of laying in some filler here and there) and the machinist friend works cheap out of his barn...plus he is a vise nut as well !

ALLFAST, the 577 is just about the all around perfect vise.---Really well made, not to big, not to little.---Right in that sweet spot.---And pretty darn hard to finds to.

Grouseman,

A sweet spot it is, and at 150#, it will definitely sink the see saw ! I picked up an ugly, but mechanically MINT Hollands 44 1/2 Swivel rear jaw over a year ago.

I think it weighed out at 89 pounds (?) and I thought it was a decent sized vise until I had to manhandle and carry the 577 from my car into the big shed. The 577 dwarfs the Hollands. Has anyone even SEEN a Hollands 44 1/2 ? I researched along time online and only found 1 mentioned.
I think it was here, and maybe a young man in college had just bought it and was maybe flipping it. He was either looking for value advice and also trying to free up the sliding rear jaw. It was black. Not to get off track, but I couldn't even find an old catalog listing or mention of one anywhere in my Internet travels.

Rock islands are a favorite of mine. Love the 3.5" dual swivel I've got.
A good 6" is definitely useful to have though. More than once my big Morgan has held another vise in it's jaws

Crusin,

Thanks for the post. That obituary was fascinating. The history of the industrial era is very rich I deed. The catalog is blurred on my end but I'll do some research from here.

A picture of old greenie. I bought it from a young gentleman that had bought an old manual machine shop and then converted to all CNC and started doing small custom prototype work.

He said this was lovingly packed in a wooden case and was stored under an outcast little work bench in an unused corner of the shop. He attempted a few flea market sales and had no interest. He finally put it on CL and was asking $100.

I was stuck. at work and called him, thinking it was long gone. Well we get to talking about all of the cool old vintage tools and things, and how the quality and character is so great and greatly under appreciated, etc. He told me most of his callers seemed to be looking for a lowball deal, and had no concern for its history.

As is my standard CL SOP/MO, I offered him $120 (over is 100 asking price) if he could hold it for a few days. You'd think I offered him a grand...he was so happy it wasn't going to be flipped or turned into "steam punk " art that he readily agreed.

We both got busy and two weeks later finally met up and the photo didn't do it justice. We ended up talking about our upbringings and machinery for nearly an hour !

This one is next in line for a refurb. Probably going to its old light green ?

Sorry for the novel, but every tool, like a person , has a story

Shawn

I almost forgot the most important thing! The forged non replaceable jaws are PERFECT in every regard except for perhaps two nearly imperceptible little edge nicks, and the slide surfaces are super smooth with almost no blemishes.

A definite score and my first vise purchase.

ALLFAST: Thanks for the pix and the story. Great rescue on a great vise. If your cursor changes to a hand when you scroll over my picture then click on it. What you see on the GJ page is just a thumbnail. My original picture was readable but a little blurry. Of course, at my age everything is a little blurry.

I belive the issue is this Android S5 of mine. I'm a simpleton, and clicking it larger makes it worse ! I'll find that catalog.

I didn't realize it was supposed to look so nice !

Thanks to you both for technical support efforts !

On another front, sometime around 0 dark 30 I posted a question/observation about Rock Island casting letters and dates. I cant for my life find the thread. It was another members topic of RI I believe.

I'll keep searching. If anyone finds it, hit me with a small sledge hammer please .

Thanks!

Crusin and Groiseman,

I figured out that if I click the highlight image designator just once, and not the photo , it became perfectly clear.

Thanks again fine Sirs

It's on the regular vise thread. Post number 52724. There are two replies so far. Good luck. Here's a link to that thread:

Good Morning !

Does any member have a set of decent to very nice original jaw inserts for a Rock Island 577 ?

I'm aware of the awesome stuff that KS has available (I will use his as a last resort) but I'm trying to keep the spirit of the 1940 product alive by going with original pieces.

If the unicorn exists, please email or PM me.

Thank you !

Shawn

AF: you are really fishing now, but who knows i just saw an old set of Parker jaws show up. i've seen a few busted 577's and a few that have had some horrible modifications so having one show up that's busted with a pair of good removable jaws might not be so far fetched. good luck.

VA: what are you cooking up sir? hope you are feeling better and looking forward to your new stuff you've gathered. did you figure out how to get your pictures off of Photobucket?

cheers

D,
I'm a hopeful, opptopessimist ! I will say this, I have always had an uncanny ability for rare or hard to find pieces end up in my hands, even before the magic of the interwebs was around.

It's now my distinct goal to get a pair. The hunt is on !

Be Safe everyone,

Shawn

Drive, I'm entering vises and their page #s again that I had written down since last Spring.---Just couldn't set at the computortator long enough to enter anything without a jolt of 220 electjusity running down my leg.---My old saw-bone has put humpty back together.

The Journal only allows 10,000 characters per page so wait till I get a full page of vises and have moved on to the next page, and then you can copy and past the full one to the pages you have reserved.

Yea, I got most of the pics transferred over with the help of a fine gentleman and member here on the forum.---Still in progress.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ALLFAST, if you will put Rock Island Vises in your watch group on EBay, there is always someone who is parting out a vise rather than selling it as is.---And this usually holds true for any brand.---It's true that you are placing a tall order cause 577s are in high demand, so are the parts.---A lot of people would love to get their hands on one, and they just don't pop up that often.---But who knows, stranger things have happened.:dunno:---Don't forget about KMS, he does darn good work.---I got a set he made for a 326 Starrett and they look better than store bought.

VA: when you are ready for me to cut and paste or just refer to the posts you are updating just let me know and i'll DO IT. glad to hear you are feeling a bit better and also thank you very much for taking on the big job of searching out vises on the big vise thread and giving us a reference here. WELL DONE!!

AF: sounds ok to me cause the parts thread that was started years ago doesn't get many views and the guys that need to repair vises usually check here now.

happy searching for your jaws for 577 and of course your searching for other gems like a Reed C series or 400 series vises among others. if you like working with wood you might want to find a VERSA VISE and for little stuff a Wilton Baby bullet.

here's the versa vise YouTube video that sold me the idea that i needed one and now i own two.

Oh Boy, that doesn't sound to good. "I will use his as a last resort".

I added a drawing just in case you want to make a pair.

I've done a search, but haven't found anything specific (perhaps too many messages in this thread?)

I've got a Paramo vise (Record equivalent I suppose) that has a gooched-up jaw screw hole. I'm not a welder, and was curious if JB Weld would be suitable for filling, and then a new tap for threads on this cast iron head? Or?

TIA.

Kevin,

My apologies Sir with respect to my "last resort" comment. In retrospect I would have worded things more respectfully.
I had just spent 3 hours chopping/shoveling a 50'x12' unexpected section of 1" thick ice on my driveway that had to be dealt with, and then jumped on the GJ and fired away.
I am well aware of the high quality products you produce, and of your passion for your craft (I have 2 machinists and a boiler maker in my family).. While I am a new GJ member. I've been reading the boards for along time and have recognized that you in particular (and many others with specialized skillsets) have a love of the game, and a desire to do only do things right, mechanically speaking.
I didn't mean I could create or procure a pair of jaws as good as, or better than yours. I cant. Even with a fully equipped shop...I have no advanced skills! I only meant that I really hope to find a pair that are a decent original, to match the spirit and "look" of this 77 year old piece. In fact, your price is an absolute bargain for what you are creating. I think I'm not digging the heat treating rainbow effect I'm seeing in all the pictures ! I know it is the result of a superior surface treatment, but could I order a pair with a simple natural finish ? In all reality, this 577 I found is a static display treasure, and it won't see any commercial use or super heavy duty abuse. Maybe an occasional "big job" for myself or one of my many neighboring ranchers.
Anyway, my apologies for the red badge of courage here, and I appreciate the drawing as it will help my machinist uncle get the jaws all dialed in for the new inserts (yours or good originals !).
The Red Seal you just posted is sweet ! I like the gold lettering for contrast. BTW, Is $$200 too much to pay for an advertised 4" American Scale Red Seal #64 ? The owner claims it's 80#, and it is in fine unmolested original shape. I was thinking 125 to 150 ?

Until next time, and stay safe !

Regards,

Shawn

I've done a search, but haven't found anything specific (perhaps too many messages in this thread?)

I've got a Paramo vise (Record equivalent I suppose) that has a gooched-up jaw screw hole. I'm not a welder, and was curious if JB Weld would be suitable for filling, and then a new tap for threads on this cast iron head? Or?

TIA.

This, I hate to have to say, is one of those not-nice 'theres no free lunch' situations.

That part can be mended, but the only reasonably good way to do it would be to clean up the ragged scars around that tapped hole with a little carbide rotary file, then braze in to fill the scars. Once cool, file to flatness, use the jaw itself as a jig to locate the hole, and drill with the drill size for a heli-coil tap. Tap for heli-coil, run the insert, and you'll have a sound repair.

In short, if you don't do welding/brazing, get someone who does to help you.

You could opt to 'mickey-mouse' the job by de-rusting the part, cleaning whatever existing threads may still be there with a tap, then run a wax (resist) coated bolt into the hole, and pack with Devcon or equivalent steel powder/epoxy putty. That wouldn't work very well, to be sure, but it might be 'better than nothing' for gentle use, or display.

cheers

Carla

Hey Shawn
No biggie, after thinking about it I should be the last resort. The first resort should be making your own. In machinist words, how hard is is to make square blocks with screw holes and serrations cut at 30 degrees with a pitch of a 1/8 inch. Simple stuff. You can make them out of O-1 tool steel and heat treat them your self with a torch and a bucket of oil for quenching. I am happy to share any of my drawings I have on jaws, I have a pretty good collection.

Buying vises is really up to the buyer on what he is willing to pay. The Red Seal I repaired I bought for 10cents a pound. Any vise in good condition is worth something. We have a few vise appraisers that sell used vises to other members that can quote the worth better then me. Maybe they could chime in especially with pic's.

Today I helped a person get his baby vise back together. Seems the spindle was lost. McMaster Carr has 3/8:10 Acme rod in stock for $11 a foot. It was a little time consuming because I do not own a lathe and with all the setups but a spindle from scratch was possible. Much easier then single pointing the acme threads on a lathe. I bored the 3/8 hole for a press fit and TIG welded the all-thread in place. Added a new handle and it is almost as good as new.

Kevin,

I really appreciate the words of wisom there ! I'll see what my uncle can do with his mill. He's been at it since 1953 and is definitely capable, so I'll keep you posted as to what develops.

It's so true with collectibles, in that an item is worth what someone is willing to pay at that moment, etc. This vise has been around for awhile, so maybe I'll show up with his full asking price and practice some bartering skills !

That little Wilton is cool, and that's a very effective down and dirty repair you did. Nice job. It looks like a 930, which I received from my uncle about 7 years ago....it started the little slippery slide that I'm on !

Thanks for sharing the project pictures, and good repair stories. I know they are appreciated on this great little board.

Until next time !

Shawn
