Kevin,
My apologies Sir with respect to my "last resort" comment. In retrospect I would have worded things more respectfully.
I had just spent 3 hours chopping/shoveling a 50'x12' unexpected section of 1" thick ice on my driveway that had to be dealt with, and then jumped on the GJ and fired away.
I am well aware of the high quality products you produce, and of your passion for your craft (I have 2 machinists and a boiler maker in my family).. While I am a new GJ member. I've been reading the boards for along time and have recognized that you in particular (and many others with specialized skillsets) have a love of the game, and a desire to do only do things right, mechanically speaking.
I didn't mean I could create or procure a pair of jaws as good as, or better than yours. I cant. Even with a fully equipped shop...I have no advanced skills! I only meant that I really hope to find a pair that are a decent original, to match the spirit and "look" of this 77 year old piece. In fact, your price is an absolute bargain for what you are creating. I think I'm not digging the heat treating rainbow effect I'm seeing in all the pictures ! I know it is the result of a superior surface treatment, but could I order a pair with a simple natural finish ? In all reality, this 577 I found is a static display treasure, and it won't see any commercial use or super heavy duty abuse. Maybe an occasional "big job" for myself or one of my many neighboring ranchers.
Anyway, my apologies for the red badge of courage here, and I appreciate the drawing as it will help my machinist uncle get the jaws all dialed in for the new inserts (yours or good originals !).
The Red Seal you just posted is sweet ! I like the gold lettering for contrast. BTW, Is $$200 too much to pay for an advertised 4" American Scale Red Seal #64 ? The owner claims it's 80#, and it is in fine unmolested original shape. I was thinking 125 to 150 ?
Until next time, and stay safe !
Regards,
Shawn
