Grainger, McMaster, Zoro and the like. I have seen them called set-screw shaft collars.

feb: Here's a picture of that collar from a 5191. Better late than never. It has internal threads so that it will turn up the spindle like a nut would and then the set screw holds it in place.

This thread keeps me going. I was able to take the picture since I am still recovering and haven't been able to work on my 97. The 4c is in pieces as is the 97 but I am healing. Since I didn’t take the 5197 apart are there any words of wisdom on adjusting the sleeve?
I was able to hit the local metal yard and scored this little jewel. It is a helicopter tripod hydraulic jack for 30 bucks. I am going to use it for my vise stand base, adjustable height vise don't you know. There were desert camouflage wheels, deuce 1/2 drums, we are just south of Le Jeune and Cherry Point air station as well as a Coast Guard station.
Gotta love it.

NC: i think we'll need a few more pictures of your new hydraulic stand. also are you trying an inversion table and look for an invertalign (made by Teeter ups and sold online or at Costco) or a Teeter Ups. i'm still hanging and it's still working for me and no Advil for back pain in 9 years after buying my first inversion table. it won't fix everything, but my 83 year old mom had an MRI and was taking vicadin and doctors still couldn't figure out the issue and her hanging for a week she was off the meds and hanging for 5 minutes 6 days a week for a month and it's been 2 years and no back pain.

I have a Prentise Monark Lion Head vise that I am restoring and was needing to know original paint color. It has numbers 209 and 210 by the lion head emblem. It has 2-1/2" jaws. Any help is appreciated.

bogies: Sorry, I don't know what the original color was but the restored Monarchs that are painted black with a gold lion's head are just outstanding looking. It's a very nice vise. Is there a special reason you want the original colors or do you just want to keep it original? Welcome to the thread.

Bogie: most of the monarchs i've owned and seen are black and my guess it might have been Prentiss vise company's Japaning type finish or since Monarch was actually considered their economy line if you can believe that maybe it was just black paint.

a gold lion's head would be a nice touch or gold leaf if you are able and want to spend a bit more money.

That rusty vise I was considering yesterday has been positively identified as a Rock Island (exmaxima you were right) and the seller has doubled his asking price after I contacted him. It is now advertised as "needing jaws"
I was thinking about driving over to see it...now I am OUT.

Thanks for the Info. Was thinking about the original colors. There was not any trace of paint on it and I could not find any info or pictures of one. Black was my first thought.

Bogie: BLO (boiled linseed oil) baked or cooked on in a shop oven or smoker has sort of the look of JAPANNING if you might want to go that method instead of just paining it Black.

Thanks guys for the nice words on the P98. It is basically done, still need to finish up the (old) smooth jaws and the new set from KMScott, and also bolt her down ... but like Drives says, gotta wait and see just how far out of my budget a RR stand might be. Yes, the finish is several light coats of BLO ... air dried, don't have an oven that can hold this one

One of those railroad sort of stands for my big peter wright is on my to do list. Thinking of using a small piece of box section I have for the vertical, and fabricate a steel pan for the base. Filled with lead ingots it will be an immovable object. Take all the lead out and unbolt the vise, and a couple guys should be able to carry it.

Just waiting on finding a big piece of plate for the right price

VINTAGE: sounds like a road trip to the USA for some steel is maybe moving up your list? i know where you might be able to get a 23 inch diameter 4 inch piece of plate in case that's not too heavy. bring some muscles.

The linseed oil sounds like a good idea. Its more durable for daily use than paint would be. I use the linseed oil on hammer heads that I clean up and restore all the time. Will post pictures in a few days when I get it done.

Hey Guy's I have the railroad stand drawn up thanks to Vises. Here is a image of it. Wrenchguy can possibly supply the steel plates from his son. I will be making a couple for myself since I have a couple 8" vises waiting for stands.

I used the BLO that everyone raves about on Demo's 109. After using it I see why it is so popular with the guys. It is super easy to use. I put a heavy coat on the 109 and let it dry in my cold shop for two months and it hardened up pretty good. Most of my restores require major repairs so using BLO on my stuff is not something I'll use often.

trijeff, look forward to seeing it finished. You need one of these stands. When I visited Demoman, he had on stuffed in every corner it seemed like. These guys like Vises, Demoman, Zoomie and VA know how to collect vises and vise parts.

I've had good luck adding pine tar to Blo. Either on its own, or with enough beeswax to make a paste. I'm usually a fan of paint, but I do things like anvils, screw jacks, and blacksmith vises with it.

What are the thoughts on the tapered upright? My boy could turn it from solid. matter fact he's installing the biggest (so he says) leblond lathe built.
He mentioned something like 55'. They just put in huge horizontal boring mill, something like 12' tall and ??? square. Has goodings in its name. He don't have anything thicker that 3/4" plate now. i don't hang out over there to much, as his dad i get too nervous about his investing in shop equipment. Alls i know he ain't 30 yet and been a millionaire. He buys and sells scrap for cash-flow. Sometimes he's gotta sell good stuff too. Me posting scrap for $.28 a pound was a hook to u guys to take notice, but…. now i gotta tell you there is $20 track cutting charge per piece. I hope its all good.

p.s. what about anyone else here having anything thicker plate wise? Ken can surely get thicker stuff retail…… anyway sorry to ramble.

As for the taper on the stands that is something found by guys like Demoman and you Wrenchguy who makes a living scrapping out business's and working heavy steel. Having a big Leblond lath is a good thing but this taper if solid would be a heavy guy. I made a stand out of 3/8 plate cut as tapered rectangles. Welded together to create the taper look, my setup came out almost 300lbs. Wrench, if you ever find a 2-1/2 x 18 x 24 inch plate and a 28" round base plate at 2" I would be interested in either trading or purchasing them from you. I go to Denver every other month to a metal scrap yard looking for these plates. I am envious of your boy's setup.

great traditional looking old style stand ur making there. i agree about the thick plate needed, he had some 4" thick big stuff few months back. but….. i just this past week got him to let me put it here about his services. we are peeled now 4 sure about thicker stuff. his big boring mill is a gidding-lewis, not wooding. he don't allow cnc in his shop, thank god for his machine shop teacher 15 years ago. thanks

That thing solid would be a good bollard for mooring ships.. Wouldn't even need to bolt it down

Speaking of which, a large bollard could make an interesting stand.

Had several interesting ideas for stands. Cast iron trumpet from the rear axle of a large farm tractor could be interesting as well. Already has flanges and bolt patterns on each end. Attach whatever sort of mounting plate you need. Could look interesting as well.

Anybody familar with a Columbian 2060 vise ??? I'm thinkin' this is a knock off.
It doesnt say USA on the sides and is mounted so I could not check the bottom.
Beefy sucker I will say. At least a 6" jaw, big swivel base too.
Here a pic I grabbed of the name and a pic I found on the web.
Google search didnt find much at all.

Wont be surprised to find it is an import, but dont want to miss a real Colombian either...

I could use some help on a vise I just picked up.
Its a Simplex 33sj (cast on the side) I think it is a swivel jaw but I can't get the pin out of the swivel jaw yet. I am trying pressure on the bottom of the pin with a bolt and coupling nut but so far no luck. I haven't tried heating yet and am waiting for penetrant to work some magic. Anything else I should try?
It also needs a new base it someone has one for sale.

I just wanted to update this post to say the pressure and A.T.F. were successful in freeing the swivel pin. I just left it alone for a couple of days and it was loose when I went to check on it.
