Thanks for the heads-up.

Too bad it is so fat.

Your welcome. It's actually not bad looking but yeah be nice to not have to cut it. The beefier cord I think fits the look of the block grinder. Plus the cord is nice and long. I'll post pictures later if you would like?

The 18's are for ordinary PC's and no, to light (Maybe for a 1/4" hand drill?). 16 or 14 should be fine unless you maybe have a big boy...

So just got done putting my block grinder back together and wanted to give you a heads up about the power cord from Amazon that we posted about on here. The power cord is a monster compared to the original. The original stress relief wouldn't fit over the cord so I had to cut the outer shield and then apply some electrical tape. Couple wraps is all that is needed. Also make sure you allow yourself long enough wire to connect the power sources.
I would be interested to see the diameter of the hole for the power cable, when I take mine out I will measure it, you can buy replacement strain relief clamps is different sizes pretty cheap so maybe that is an easy solution.

I'll take some pics and post them. It's nothing super fancy but it's my first and I am happy with it.

I have seen the different stress plugs but was to to Impatient to wait..Lol...But it doesn't look bad at all if done right.

Oh and I know torqueman has a big write up about grinder wheels but wanted to know what all you guys use. I mostly work with weldable steel and will also be used for sharpening my tools...It was information overload reading everything last night. Lol

IIRC - the hole is 'D' shaped and would be difficult to enlarge to fit a larger size strain relief.

Will a grommet and the new cord fit the existing hole?

On different applications, I've used a grommet and a wire tie on the power cord inside of the chassis to keep the cord from pulling out.

Thanks!

On mine it is circular. 1/3 HP 397.19391. when I get home I'll take a picture and show you what it looks like. Just waiting on the flag terminals to come in that were sent to me so I can finalize it all.

Norton stones, you can usually find cheap on eBay. McMaster has decent prices too, I don't know what brand they stock, you can email them with the model # you want and they will tell you the actual "brand"...

Grit is a personal preference... 46-60 for me is a good all-round abrasive. Just really depends on how much material you want to take off and how quick. Things heat up fast on a bench grinder so always keep a tray with water nearby..

Osborn or Weiler USA wheels (also available on eBay cheap). I like the finer wire, but to each their own. USA wheels are a million times better than the cheap chinese ones in the big-box stores because they don't shed wire like a porcupine...

Alrighty gents here is my very first block grinder restoration. It's 1/3 HP 397.19391. I know, nothing super fancy. Wanted to keep this as close to original as possible. This is the one UPS smashed. I am just waiting for my decal to show up. I have the original still. I'll see if I can get it back on successfully or not. The shot of the power cord is what I was talking about a few post back. It's the one from Amazon. It's 53" long and thicker then the original. I'll pull the cable in more to **** the cover up to the stress relief. Left some out for visual. Hope you all like it. Now onto finding a 1/2 HP round top. Anyone got one for sell?

Awesome job! What did you use for paint? The rest look great! I took a wire wheel to mine earlier to start the clean up process. Now I need to buff them like yours!

Thanks everyone for the great words. Here's the run down of stuff I used to clean, repair and paint

Clean rusty nuts, bolts, washers and tool rest: large and small brass wire, sand dry with 320-400grit, wet sand 600-2100grit, then Mother's polish

Paint: plastikote gray rebuilders cast and Silver Argant wheel paint.

Plastic Sheilds repair and cleaner: Novus 1 & 2

Thread repair/clean up: Right and Left hand Die; taps for bolt holes

What about the big crack in the right side????

Inquiring minds have to know!

I replaced that cover with a new one. I will be attempting to repair the cracked one this weekend. Been reading and asking questions on how to repair the cracked cover. It's a long process to repair cast aluminum. Lots of heating and cooling while adding filler. Kind of like welding cast iron just harder..

Grinder looks great...:rocker:

Man it definitely is a small world.. so did you build them?
I worked in material support during that project, I was there for the proto type demo roll over hull all the way thru the last boat, it was a fun program but keep in mind those boats were delivered via trailers to their final locations; most were sent to VA or Washington state and I can tell you some stories of things they hit along the way :scared:, we took down more power lines than anyone should be allowed to. :D

Man that so cool! I've never met anyone that worked on the 47, well besides other Coasties...I can only imagine what all was hit. I use to trailer 25' boats all over the world so I know all about hitting or being hit..lmao

Oh I know all about the LCAC They were great, when they ran right..The ones I was always seemed to always break down. It was the LCAC fleet out of San Diego, CA... Loud man they were loud.. they would load me, my team, boats and gear and drop us off on the beaches.. good times..

So where's a good place to buy replacement flanges? I looked on the website you posted torqueman and nothing came up. Need 4 2" x 1/2"

Flanges that go on the shaft to hold the stones in place? I see them pop up on eBay from time to time. Good old machined ones too, not the cheap flimsy modern stamped ones.

Man sure is tough trying to find quality arbor flanges. When I do find a 2" x 1/2" it's stamped steel

The ones from 1800toolrepair.com were not what I hoped for; certainly not as robust as the OEMs.

How many do you need?

Looking to get 8 but 4 to get me started. Need them for the grinder I just finished. I don't trust the ones that were on it when I bought it. Rusted up pretty bad
