Checked my store yesterday, no folding shelf for the black 4 drawer cart.

Anyone have a picture of the latest flyer?

I really hope they are going to make a black one. I was just wanting to add one of these to my box but figured I'd have to use the red one and modify it to fit plus paint it - but now maybe not :rocker:

It's Matco not HF but a 18" magnet on the face & some exhaust clamps on the side for holding stuff. 9e110203b08c480f49cf54040e839208.jpg53837d434b8f955611d9872d6fefee72.jpg

A simple stamped sheetmetal item priced for 1/3 the price of the tool box itself has me shaking my head.

Well, you could always use a coupon or make your own shelf.

Yup, will make my own if needed.

Yes. I can't remember how many times I stood in the isle looking at the shelf, and then walking away without it.

And in the end, you'll have put about $90 worth of time, labor, and materials into building a folding shelf that you could have bought and put into use on the same day for 1/3 the cost.

I have nothing but time. Material is no problem. And I enjoy making my own things whenever possible. Otherwise, for those with money and no time there is nothing wrong with purchasing a pre made shelf.

I agree that the challenge of building your own shelf could be an interesting diversion if you're inclined. I was just pointing out which option was more cost effective in light of the observation you made about the comparison of the cost of the shell vs the cost of the cart.

I like to make things too, and have a pretty well outfitted home metal shop. But at this point in my life, I've come to value my time too. For me, things like this that are easily purchased for a few dollars are preferable. That way I can spend my time making things I can't readily buy. Its a fine balance.

I built mine with materials I find cheap or free, last one I found an old parts washer in a scrap heap, I used the lid from that & a pair of folding hinges for $3 each. Less then 10 bucks. I bet the lid from a washing machine would work too, check out your local metal recycle center.

I was inspired by this forum. So I thought I'd share. I used carbon fiber vinyl, lexan and door edge. dffa3ede42d951472c43beb494a39486.jpg022dbef4c50103e5e95e3025f63e74a7.jpg9f230563793ce474d3857a0a2fdba0db.jpg2cdec34754f4cc3a34962901b0c3cc0f.jpg066c9c831a465395bd3930aef8a4e9e4.jpg

That looks awesome!

Yes, the accessories are expensive relative to the cart. The 44" is very cheap compared to the top box and side cabinets. However the total cost is still very low and the utility value higher than other options.

Same here
I made my own for less than $10 and it is sized to my needs. Post #1989, page 100 of this thread. I bought folding brackets that a couple of other posters had used, I got mine at Menards but other big box stores sell the same ones.

Where did you get the metal pegboard

That amazon link posted by the OP is good for small quantities but if you want more you can get it much cheaper from www.cheappegboard.com It' all scratch/blem factory seconds but generally they're in plenty good condition. They also have accessories. I love the setup I installed in my garage about 6 months ago.

Not sure if this qualifies cause it's a 16 drawer but I had a couple extra HF magnets and figured I'd get my prybars out of the box instead of taking up space. I needed to enlarge the holes some but it works great

how convenient! if someone wanted to break into your tool box they wouldn't have to look very far for a prybar.

This is more an addition than a modification, but I added a RAM mount for an iPad on the side of my cart. My little area here is for working on my motorcycle and I can use the iPad to display repair manuals, watch repair videos, look up parts online and a host of other things.

How much was that? I'm looking for something similar for the iPad I just bought. Something I can use at my main box and on my cart

Who knows?
Now THAT is pretty slick. I've been wanting to put a laptop in the shop so I can pull up Alldata. I really don't have the room for a standalone station though. This looks like just the ticket.

I've had it now for probably 5 years so I don't know exactly, but I remember it being around $50. It did not come with the suction base, though. The base it came with was a round screw/bolt-down type. I already had the suction base from an old GPS mount.

I originally purchased the mount for my wife and mounted it in the kitchen so she could use it to display recipes while cooking. We recently moved then renovated the kitchen in our new house and she didn't want it in the new digs so I made use of it.

Sorry if this is already answered on previous pages, but searching isn't finding it for me. What is the part number, and where can I buy (for the lowest cost etc) the Snap-On hinges (or others with the same benefits) for my HF 5 drawer tool cart?. When I search, I've found someone selling one on the forum for $10 last year, but cannot find any more information.

My cart is only just assembled this week, but the modifications I'm looking for are this hinge, removing the ''lid down, drawers locked'' feature (as it's at home and I have zero need to lock the drawers, but would like to use the top of the lid as a work surface for jobs where I do not need to access the tools stored in top).

The other thing I'm trying to find, is stick on rubber for the bottom shelf and the top of the lid. I want something tougher than the foam, and want to make the top of the lid a nice light weight work surface. I've seen someone mention they had some left over from McMaster, but no part number/link.

Thanks.

1) I have two of the red carts and use the tops for a kb/mouse surface for my CNCs. I don't use the space under the lid often, so I put batteries and other occasional things in there.

I drilled out the rivets that hold on the C-channel for the lid lock on both of them. Then just pulled out the inner locking bars and it's all good. Lid down, drawers unlocked. Someone else mentioned maybe opening the lid, then drawers and close the lid or something to defeat the lock - but I just removed them before I read that.

2) I've seen some use anti-fatigue mat for the top, a rubber floor mat etc. I'm not a big fan & prefer AL or stainless as a work surface. It all depends on what you plan on doing. Mcmaster self-adhesive is $$$$ - Dynomat or generic similar would be better.

4Kings is correct. The part number is KRBC8T9. Here is the link: https://store.snapon.com/PARTS-Set-Clip-Pin-Hinge-P665649.aspx

Thanks 4Kings and thepipe. There's no picture of it on the snap-on site, but google shows me that it is a hinge that replaces the gas struts (?). I had it in my mind that it replaced the actual hinge, and somehow locked the lid open. If it just replaces the gas struts, then it makes the lid like the 4 drawer black one(?), then I think I'll stick to the struts for now.

I'll look for some sort of floor mat or something for the top. I like metal for actual work benches, but I see the top of this as where I might do fine assembly work or lay out some tools when working on my car.

While googling the hinge part number, I did get some inspiration from people who've mounted a 7 drawer end cabinet to the side of their 5 drawer cart. That might be a 2018 project.

Thanks

The reason for the Snapon hinge upgrade is twofold. Some have reported that the struts fail completely or become so weak they won't hold the top up. Secondly they position the lid at 90 degree to the box. Now if you add weight to the top in the form of a mat, it could accelerate the failure of the struts.

I haven't done the hinge mod yet but I have noticed that my struts aren't quite as strong as when they were new.
