is it ironic when people complain about the quality/quanity/value/object of various deals in a thread like this are not the people you see posting deals all the time, or is it hypocritical? i can never keep that straight.

There's a huge difference between constructive feedback and "complaining"....

I think sometimes people need to simply speak up because many others are probably thinking the same thing. :dunno:

On the other hand, there was a LOT of work put into this thread by a FEW people (eg. four.cycle) in order to highlight many of the interesting, high quality, and undersung USA tools/brands.

That I think is a different subject, because the purpose of those listings was more about broadening people's awareness of what was even for sale.

So I'll just repeat something I said above--ther needs to be a caveat for items that are RARE, inherently interesting, obscure, and otherwise perhaps unthought of (relables, no longer in production, cult-following etc).

Also, four.cycle's posts are usually recognizable and formatted in a way that's easy to skim (or to skip) for those not interested for whatever reason in digging into the specific niche stuff he highlights.

I'll give some examples of great things he's posted about...like OTC vintage pullers...from what I can tell they are high quality and even when they trade at "market value" they seem to be underpriced for what you get.

Thos types of items seem to be inherently hot deals, not just auctions that have not yet become competitive because its too early in the listing.

Also, from what I understand, Four.cycle's posts (and similar posts) aren't really risking the appearance of shilling for any particular seller/brand or whatever....they don't strike anyone as being publicity, PR or whatever (although I'm sure they direct some attention on what is in his listings).

They just seem well edited and thoughtful, which is great, and so nobody in general is complaining about interesting listings (at least not me).

There are no hard and fast rules on Ebay. The only constant is that it is wildly unpredictable.
Using different search parameters will turn up some interesting results, which we've discussed in this thread previously:

- Use that "advanced" search feature (just to the right of the blue "search" button")

- Instead of searching for "socket set", try "3/8 sockets"

- Try variations on the spelling of a brand you are looking for. I've found some killer deals listed as "Hebrand" or "Herband" or "Thorson" or "Thoreson". Just because the manufacturer's name is stamped (or forged) onto the item doesn't necessarily mean the seller knows how to read.

- Some items are listed in ways that simply don't make sense. Although overly time consuming and tedious, you would be amazed what will turn up by using broad search parameters (i.e., "1/2 socket".)

- Bear in mind EBay's search function only picks up exactly what you are searching for; a search for "socket" will not always return results for "sockets". Unlike Google, Ebay doesn't try to think for you.

goofbid is sometimes a useful tool for commonly misspelled brands. A lot of tools have various names people call them too. I'm still not sure what the real name for a shake n break/old man/screw knocker/whatever ati540 is and they're always listed with different names too.

Ebay search will allow you to do some useful things also, like it treats quotation marks and -'s the same as google does.

"craftsman usa" will bring back results that have craftsman usa just like in the quotes, no craftsman made in usa results like it normally would display without the quotes.
Craftsman -USA will yield results that do not contain the word USA in the title.

As for the majority of the snap-on hand tools I listed, those are in the wrong category. That seller lists ALL his tools in the rivet tool section, so it is often overlooked as that most people narrow their search down to the home & garden or automotive section, and not the air tool section in business and industrial category.

I find that snap-on and craftsman are so popular they're swarmed with other listings just to leech off the brand popularity. Lots of "like snap-on" ("Proto 5450 1/2" Drive Ratchet, Proto 712S 12" Wrench New! Comparable Mac, Snap On") descriptions and now sellers will toss in those cheap chinese snap on pocket screwdrivers so they can toss "snap on" into their titles.
Craftsman just has so many tools that it really doesn't narrow anything down to search for just them in my experience lol

ThePackRats is the only seller I'm partial towards, and that's just because over 75% of my personal toolbox came from him and it was all a super good deal below market value. I've been watching his auctions daily for a bit over a year straight now, so I can predict what his repeated listings will sell for pretty accurately now lol. Since they combine shipping and will let you bid on auctions for almost 2-3 weeks before you have to pay an invoice, you can get some pretty good savings on combined shipping.

Glad to hear that tactic is working.

I never search by category. Sellers are overwhelmingly clueless when it comes to "category".

Yeah, it's just one way for ebay to charge more fees to sellers I believe. A vintage adjustable wrench falls into almost 5 different categories, and it's not uncommon for ebay to automatically select a terrible category for a search term.

I know when I search for "tool box" it automatically selects the Toolboxes, belts and storage section from the home and garden category. That cuts out all the boxes listed in Garage/Shop Tool Chests, collectable tool boxes, and MRO/industrial supply bins and business and industrial light equipment and tool storage.

so don't search "tool box".

search "metal box". use the "advanced" search feature.
you will want to put a whole bunch of stuff into the "exclude from search" box - you will know what to enter as soon as you do a quick skim of the first couple pages.
narrow it down to "US only" and "used".
search by price (lowest first) and put a minimum of $10 into the appropriate box. (otherwise the first 30 pages are going to be little cheapie jewelry and trinket boxes.)

you'll get a bajillion listings, but invariably there will be something interesting in there. same with "wooden box" or "socket box".

I usually try different search terms like tool chest, toolbox, "tool box", "tool cabinet", tool cabinet, etc. and manually set the category to all since ebay tries to choose automatically every time I search it seems. Setting it to used/new(other)/not specified cuts out most of the trinket sellers, and sorting it by nearest to me gets almost all the spam out of the way.
Only problem now is no one within 100mi from me seems to have any tool boxes larger than my current one for sell at a resonable price haha

I have found many items from posts on this thread, not all of were the listing that was posted but derived from seeing that listing. I love this thread and the idea of it and have been a regular buyer from many of the often posted sellers like Shemata.

I don't often post "great deals" because if I'm bidding on it I don't want you all driving the price up on me now do I? We all know we're bidding against gj members fairly often when buying from those sellers.

After I win an item I will post similar good deals on related from my searches but then again what is a good deal? Auctions settle out at the last hour tops. Statistics and eBay records prove it. I spent a decade doing just that, eBay sales in a limited range market for a powerseller.

It's nice to see some unique or good deal items but until Sat at 5pm Shemata items, for example, don't usually have a reflective bid unless it's an undesirable item.

My comment was simply questioning should we post brands, items, lists, sellers....anyone can find a seller with good prices on tools early on and list a portion of their auctions here. Does that help this thread, hurt it, or be status quo?
I think most of us know the regular sellers but maybe a thread of "popular eBay sellers for good deals" would be helpful?

I don't want to kill this thread or result in anyone not contributing, and maybe I'm overstepping my place questioning.
I've held unpopular opinions before and been told so, and worse.

You're not going to "kill" the thread, and I think that a certain amount of discussion here (if it's constructive) helps all of us.
From feedback comments like yours (and others), I've narrowed down what I post here to stuff that I think might be of interest (or need) to those following this thread.
I agree with you that most of the action on auction items occurs at the last minute - actually within the last 15 seconds - but that's no reason to exclude listings which start out with low bids; it's a given that the item is going to get bid up, the only question is by how much. I've seen shamata items sell for as little as two or three bucks - I bought a 1/4" spinner from him a couple months back for about $2.25, as I recall, and I clearly remember several nice Indestro ratchets going for only four or five bucks plus shipping. Bear in mind that the old "supply and demand" thing is always in play regardless of all other circumstances.

As to GJ members bidding against each other, that's going to happen now and then. It's all part of the game. On the other hand, I've seen members say "Hey guys, I need that gizmo, don't bid on it!" and (in those few instances) it seemed like most of the guys were cool with that.

I will confess that I think some of my own posts here are over-the-top huge, but: the bottom line is that it took you guys far less time to skim through one of my posts than it did for me to pick through all those ads and just find the stuff. If it's done properly (which I hope mine have been), more is better.

YMMV

BK,
I appreciate that you do what you do. I've bought a couple of items recently from looking at your listings here that I probably would have otherwise missed. Please keep up your excellent work. Thanks!

I like how your posts are organized by type (socket, wrench, vintage, etc..) and you just post links. That way I can scroll through and click on just the stuff I'm interested in.

I "watch" a lot of the items just to see what they end up selling for, most end up at prices you expect (like common ratchets). But there is always that chance nobody bids, or it's something I'm wanting (like some 1/4"-Drive) and I'll bid. Then there is the nicer / rarer stuff, always interesting to see what those prices go to...

I have one of those wright open head ratchets. Bought it for the novelty. Its extremely clunky, and coarse. Unless you've some real need for its true intended use, I don't recommend it.

Code's not working for me. I'm gonna bug them a little. If you want to join in, there's a "call me" button where you wait in a queue to talk to somebody. I clicked a few minutes ago and it said ETA 16 minutes.

https://ocsnext.ebay.com/ocs/cusr?query=1&levelHierarchy=1a1a4

Update: the robot called back, and I got connected to a human. He said they're aware that there's an issue, and that he would call me back once it's resolved, and if it can't be resolved in time (only 2 hours left), they would give me an alternative coupon.

So, call in, and get your carts ready!

Thanks, Got the same deal. They said they will reissue a code in an email within a day. We'll see how it goes.

I feel that when something is so obviously wrong, we should try to make at least a minor intent to do some due dilligence. Otherwise, we are just helping these scammers to make money, and someone has to pay for it at the end of the day. The text from the original seller is just identical, even to the point where it says "Check out our other items! http://stores.ebay.com/reddingfasteners/

http://www.ebay.com/itm/44170-Norse...t-Set-USA-Jobber-Length-Set-NEW-/161599167280

It would be surprising to learn that reddingfasteners has opened a "side account" on ebay like this. Possible? Yes. Probable? Not exactly.

Not sure if this is the best place, but since it is an auction...

Shopgoodwill.com has a Wilton Bullet for local pickup only. Sacramento Valley, CA. Ends in a couple of days, but right now, bid is only at $12.98. This site is known for bids ramping up in the last hour or so, worse than eBay. Doesn't say how big the jaws are, but at 45#, guessing it is a 3-3.5".

For those who submitted questions about the 3/28 code, are you submitting them on eBay's site to eBay themselves, or PayPal? It keeps wanting to direct me to PayPal.
