Since you already have the images, you can buy decal paper on-line. Do a Google on decal paper and check what is available.

Waterslide paper, tattoo paper, glue back, whatever you need. For both Laser and ink jet printers. These folks seem to have it all: https://www.decalpaper.com/

You should be able to scale your images from your print program/driver.

JKB

Thanks JKB, I will look into this. It would be nice to have these as decals.

How many 8" vises do you have now Vises? How heavy is that Columbian? If anyone wants to make Columbian jaws there is a market for them. Here is a 8" vise with jaws for dimensions. I get calls everyday.

I'm not to sure how many 8" I have. I know it's more than 20.

The Colombian ill have to weigh and get back to ya.

As soon as I asked about the weight I looked on your Spreadsheet FMC and there it was 268lbs. I use your work everyday in my work FMC and had a brain fart there, should have looked first. I love your Vises Spreadsheet.

I was like "Oh just a lightweight 150 pound Columbian 8" vise" then I saw the 108 instead of 508 and realized it was the rarely seen heavy Chipping Vise! Well done!

Had this 614 and gave to a friend so can't measure, but do not believe it would fit due to cornered lip (versus chamfer) and rounded back mounting tab (versus more pointy)

Sorry for the late reply, I was away hunting vises for a few days, pics to come later. Anyway, my Athol 614 looks nothing like that, suspect it must be older. I'm pretty sure it has a tapered lip, not square cornered, at least that's what I remember from when I mounted it many moons ago. The back end is pointed, not squared off like yours. Like I said, I think my Athol 614 is real close to the sketch.

Finally finished! Going to play around with the finish on the vise some more yet, not quite happy with how it looks.
My favorite 8# persuader on the base for a size comparison

Gravity has sunk it a couple inches into the gravel, I have a feeling it won't be moving around on me!

Looks great topop.

I still have a jpg of that decal somewhere, but I lost all the layered graphics files when my computer committed suicide. Glad to see that it worked out for you. I still haven't touched either of my 804's yet.

I picked up an Athol No. 66 from a retired Maryland State Trooper today that I knew back in the day. Unfortunately I think there is a crack or prior repair to it. I still like the vise and plan on cleaning and painting this one.

That may not be a crack in the last picture. It looks like iron scale from excessive rust OR it could be a bit of Japanned coating left over from flaking.

EDIT : Nevermind.
I was looking at the wrong spot. That's a hairline crack.

You toy with my feelings. Yup, I agree and it's on the other side too but not as noticeable.

That's a common fail point on this style. No matter what brand...

Now I remember!!! Thanks again Jake! I have 2 of these vise's left to do. This is the third one I've done. Always red and always 2 decals. Maybe I'll change up one of the other ones..

I posted the first vise in a separate thread ( sorry for the double posting ) and had a few requests to include it here. I was reluctant to buy it at first and passed on it for a couple weeks. The finally broke down and bought it. Columbian 124-1/2. I was going to try to trade it but have grown to like it so will probably end up keeping it. Other than the jaw inserts, it's in great shape for it's age. I can't find jaw inserts for it but I've decided to try my hand at making some out of aluminum. I was going to go for brass but I don't want to spend that much money on materials for my first attempt at making them. 4-1/2" wide jaws and it opens right over 12". I've been using it for lighter duty jobs and saving the messy, and welding, jobs for my Prentiss Bulldog.

The second vise is a Prentiss Bulldog No. 53. It has had a rough life but has been repaired ( not by me ) well enough to be usable. I really like the Prentiss. Unfortunately they seem to be difficult to find, at least around here.

I've got a few others, they are nothing special. Couple of Little Giants, newer and smaller Columbians, etc. that I won't bother to post pictures of.

Very nice ...I too prefer my 100 yr old Prentiss, it's been faithfully performing for me for over 40 yrs now, has a broken corner on the dynamic and that portion actually has over the years become kinda handy for some difficult things to work on.

Between your 3, and my 2, I think we've cornered the market on these little gems.

IIRC, only one or two other members have posted one of these on the site. So, only 6 or 7 known by GJ. Not exactly a Unicorn, more like an albino donkey, I suppose. :lol_hitti

Outlaw: are we still talking about Vises?

RG: great looking little Athol and happy to hear you found an old friend that used to own it. it looks like the crack might not be fatal so maybe mounting it with a piece of steel covering the 2 screws might help it from breaking further. also like the picture taking on the dining tables and i'm not going to do that anytime soon cause at least my wife is OK so far with my vise addiction as it stands.

Vintage: i know you are into trying different things, but i like the color of your PW vise and the patina you put on the steel you made it out of is awesome. i can say you might need to put some patina on your bolts though and did you drill holes and tap them or are they just bolted to the plate? what did you end up putting under the leg of your PW cause hard to tell from the picture?

Vises: i know lining up 20 8 inch vises is a chore even with your fork lifts, but if you want to make a family picture of yours sort of like Demoman did when he put them on a big beam you have my vote. I know some Columbian vises were definitely made with the quality of the old time vises before they started making them hollow and then to japan, taiwan and china so nice find.

Drives, I've kinda been thinking the same thing. Thinking all I'll do is give the vise another top coat of Blo once the weather warms up.
The stand is rustoleum black hammer tone, my favorite and usual paint for things I've built from steel. Covers blemishes well, and is very easy to make look good. The bolts are just new grade 8 bolts, and I tapped holes in the plate for them, as all the bolts were going to be inside the box.

I drilled a 1 3/8" hole in the base with a hand drill (that is always fun..) and the leg is set in there. Actually works surprisingly well, and keeps the vise as low as possible. As is it's a tall vise and a thick stand, I wouldn't want it any higher

Hello all. I was never one to care about vises until discovering GJ. Now I have three! My first one was a small Columbian d43 1/2 that I overpaid for because I wanted a vise so bad! I have since completely restored it.

Photo-Apr-19-10-55-18-AM.jpg

My second one was a Chas Parker 973 that I picked up a year and a half ago at a garage sale for $25 and have since fully restored.

Photo-Jun-21-3-25-54-PMa.jpg

My latest acquisition was last week at a junkin' adventure with my father-in-law! Down the street from my shop is an old farm that the family is trying to clean up. They have been working at it for over 10 years, and the rusty junk and chaotic mess is as prolific as the overgrown weeds! It is so much fun to explore and see what you can dig up in the mess!

Anyway, I found this vise buried underneath a pile of junk in one of the out buildings, and for $15 it came home with me!

Vise-4.jpg

It was pretty rough looking, but with just an hour or so of scrubbing and PB Blaster, I was able to take it all apart.

Vise-1.jpg

There are no identifying marks anywhere I can see, so I was hoping the vise masters in our midst could shed some light on the maker. The jaws are 4 5/8" wide.

Thanks, jawoodworking

Drive: Thanks for the idea. I'm just going to use the Athol 66 as a show with no go piece. I got it for next to nothing. I'll clean it up and give it a Rustoleum black hammer tone paint job. I can't hide the disappointment from the crack but at least I noticed it right away. I'll have more in the can of paint and several oz.'s of simple green than the cost of the vise.

Outlaw...given a name like yours you should have no problem imagining:lol:

Actually, my sons and I collect every rusty hatchet and knife that we come across at garage sales. Future restoration projects!

Could anyone recognize this vise as well, and want to take a guess on size? My amateur guess would be Parker, partly due to color. I'm trying to contact the seller now.. The base is really interesting, looks like a thick stamped steel, could it be factory? It's far but I'm really tempted
