Somebody once said you can never have enough tools. I spent my evening cleaning the back of my truck out of the tools that had accumulated in it over the week. I did so cursing that persons comment that I took so seriously in life till now. I'm thinking instead of being known as a grumpy old man for the last 25+ years - it's maybe gotta evolve to GOM w/ TMFT: Grumpy Old Man with Too Many Friggin Tools.

When it comes to tools: Never rent when you can buy. My dad taught me that one.

Never cultivate under your nose what grows wild in the crack of your ***.

You were given a nose to breath through so you can keep your mouth shut.

This thread is an example of why I keep coming back here. Wisdom comes from unexpected places.

My favorite not previously mentioned comes from a WWII flck about fighter pilots flying in formation, when one of them (Blackie) decides he will dive his plane into a enemy anti aircraft gun....

Blackie, Blackie...don't do it Blackie!

We use that when we are trying to stop each other from doing something stupid.

"when all else fails, get a bigger hammer.." My Dad

Reminds me of what my Dad (a Toolmaker by trade) used to tell me when I would be getting frustrated and about to break something:

"Never force anything, get a bigger hammer - that's why they make them in different sizes".

He then would show me a simpler, smarter way to accomplish the job without ruining anything. Those lessons have stayed with me for all of my life.
