What is this used for? Picked this up the other day from a pawn shop. I had no idea what it was used for so I had to get it.
You have the sickness:beer::beer:
Looks like a 'nut starter' the prongs hold a nut or bolt in the tool while you finagle it into an unreachable crevasse.

Well this whole page has to be one of the more interesting pages in a while!

Bobcat I'd like to hear what that hammer is myself. What info is on it?

I was able to find out what it is after a good google of the name on the handle. It is a Chouinard Wall Hammer, used for driving in pitons when rock climbing. It dates between 1960's and 1970's. Seems to be worth a decent amount on Ebay.

Today I picked up a Yost 204 in pretty good shape, and yesterday I bought a Bonney R701 3/4" drive ratchet and 22 sockets. The sockets have definitely seen better days. Most of the sockets are Indestro. Some are Craftsman circle K stamped. They are in the worst shape and currently reside in a container of Evapo-rust. I'll probably clean up and resell the 3/4" stuff as I already have a full 3/4 set, but I'll find a place to use the Yost. $35 total for both was too good to pass up.

Nice scores, you are the first person I've seen with a Bonney R701 besides mine. They apparently aren't super common.

I for sure have the sickness. THe nut shaped hole is oblong, that makes me think its not a nut starter. being old Western Auto it has to be some kind of speciality tool for an older car is my guess

What is the Patent No.? Googleing that should tell you what it is for. I was thinking possibly a bezel driver, but it could be as OSF mentioned; to grip a nut as a starter as well. Try a 7/16 and see what it does? :dunno:

BC, I have a piton hammer as well, (Also bought to "see what it was""

Mine has a wrist strap so its not dropped. (pretty important for mountain climbing!) and I see a screw in the lower handle. Is there a slot in the bottom of the handle for a strap to go inside of?

I'm sure you noticed but the head also has safety straps to make sure the head doesn't come off...

Went back to the same sale today after doing a file inventory. Everything is a buck unless otherwise marked. $15 later, I came how with 11 files, and Eagle oiler, a neat Jiffy cabinet thing, a SAE fine thread restorer, and a small box full of sockets (Wright and Duro Chrome).

I would have bought the Jiffy cabinet yesterday, but figured no way is that $1, so left it.

A 40's/50's vintage Osborn stencil brush in exceptional condition, a vintage JAW Mfg Co thread file (9-10, 12-16, 20-27, 28-32), a wartime Williams MADE <W> U.S.A. electrical SUPERRENCH (1132, 1/2), and a Vlchek 721X (Dodge WC) wrench.

The top box behind them is a Huot.

Thanks, Lugnutz. I think I will probably clean up the leather pouch and see if anyone wants to own this thing. I'm trying to build up a fund to put my LS-6 Chevelle back together. LOL.

PS: I think I have an old socket lying around here, which I set aside after reading one of your "tools wanted" classifieds. But I never got around to responding. I'll look for it when I get home tonight.

Lump. The best thing for leather reconditioning is Neetsfoot oil (Its an oil rendered from cow bone marrow, so "related" to the leather...)

Good idea, Outlaw. Nice to hear from you again.

I've got to get started posting again. I've snagged lots of cool old tools, but always seem too busy, or too tired.

Yes it does have the hole for the safety strap. I think it will make for a good sheet metal hammer. I find myself needing a hammer with a point like that for creases and what not.

Nothing post worthy until today. Estate sale being run by family. Craftsman 101 lathe(I think it's an Atlas 618) with a bunch of extras thrown it. I wanted a little larger lathe, not sure if this is the right one for me or not, was hemming and hawing over it for a few minutes. Asked how much, guy said $150 for everything. Well, at that price, I have to buy it. So here it is on my garage floor.

Nice Pickup on that lathe, I would have been all over that!

Was able to get out to three estate sales today. Found a little something at each one. My father is up from Florida, so we had alot of fun sifting and digging through piles of stuff at two of them. Combined total was probably about $60. Found some Williams wrenches; my motto on those is "No Williams left behind!" A couple of little ball pein hammers, one being a really nice "Atha", craftsman DBE wrenches, a pair of 8 inch Armstrong C clamps, a cool old aluminum slingshot, a gauge thingy, a big old Green 6B Speed Vise, half a bamboo fishing pole(didnt realize the other half was missing til I got home) 3 Jaguar wrenches, really cool vintage Weller soldering gun, one Ford ratcheting Model T wrench, and the other little odds and ends you see in the pics.

Last stop of the day I spotted a dirty aluminum workmate in the corner, and the green porcelain light shade by the garbage. I told the guy running the sale as I was picking up some of the items I brough from him- "Hey, tell you what- Ill do you a favor and take away that workmate in the corner there and that lamp shade so you don't have to throw them away. To my surprise, he said, sure, why not? Take it away.

Absolutely, Craigslist finds are welcome . A lot of guys post their CL finds

That picture was horrible. Lets try this again from the computer this time. Sure looks like a G, just not very much like the G on either date code chart.

I went through the same thing trying to figure out the date code on my ferret. They certainly could've come up with a better system.

I picked up a little 120 year old prayer book at a sale today. Do you think it might have a prayer for better yard and estate sales? :dunno:

At 35ish lbs each and 3ft long each? Damn! Would hate to see what medium duty was lol

actually below are medium duty horse drawn bobs for up to 1500 lbs. these are 100 year old mandt oscillator sleds used mostly with grain/corn harvesting box.

i have 6 and 8 knee logging bobs that are rated 2 ton.
the 1's you have are used around places where snow is packed hard and had boards/boxes bolted to them for general utility use. i'd like 2 have them for my antique farm stuff collection. they are on epay quite often.

I got some OK deals at the German Flohmarkt (Fleamarket) today. Heyco Mercedes Benz 11 x 13 and 14 x 17mm wrenches, Gedore 14 and 17 mm combination offset wrenches, a stubby doublebox end wrench, a Wiha screwdriver, some files, small saw, made in Germany 1" chisel, and the brush for $12.

I also purchased the hammers, Steinhel heat gun, extension cord and beer Krug for about $18. The trucks were for $.50 each for the kids.

I got the Vise for free a few weeks ago from a neighbor. No markings but it is about 20 years old and was in a German Tech School. I'll have to post it on the Vises of GJ thread to see if anyone can help identify it.

Dear (Higher Being of your choice), please grant me the eyesight to spot the Snap-on's in a dirty pile of old tools and the wisdom to quickly tell them apart from those stupid New Britan sockets.

Damn weather is hurting sailing. 42.7 degrees in mid May???

Some weird stuff:

A Monroe "handheld" calculator. I've seen the big ones before but never one this small. The seller claims you can even compute square roots with it. I hope I can find some instructions for it. ($20)

the Prayer book did not help... :dunno:

Eight planned Stops, (two said "Block sale!" - ONE house does NOT make a block sale!)

One never showed at all...

NO tools (all claimed it...)

Sad...

Nearest I got to a tool was these loppers: and I only got them because they have a compound action. Three bucks

attachment.php

At one of the "block" sale I got an Indian/Mexican blanket (in the wash, it smelled), and this wood three piece flute. Made in Germany, more of a recorder design than a flute, but it says flute (in German) $8 for both.

Those are awesome. I really only bought them because #1) made in Mo. not far from me and #2) I used to have a Belgian draft when I was about 17yo. I miss that horse.... so I pretty much paid for a memory in the moment lol
