What do you mean, first hot rod that is driveable?
Avatar car?
In any event, I'm pretty sure your Model A has been repainted. And there's some other things that don't look like stock, but, hey, it's transportation. At least you can drive it.

Well Andy
It's like this, I won't even start the Zephyr because I believe it is SURELY jinxed and each time I've touched it, something went wrong.
The 29 "A" is a nice uncomplicated ride

DRives
Here is a shot of my dock as it is tonight
Here is a couple more shots of the 29 model "A"
the motor

I think you walk on water, so ya just get your feet wet.
Might have to replace the wood with the new decking material of a plastic compost with wood particles thrown in. The water sure looks crystal clear.:dunno:

Herb
I promise you that I have felt every rock on the bottom of that river. However!!
That is a nice complement Thank you
The top layer of the deck is a plastic composite (Trex) and it is holding up very nicely so I'll just replace the support boards with treated lumber and reinstall the old top layer.
The water is very clean where we play

Love the garden Don, nice job!

Hi Jeff Thanks
Nice to see you're still around!!
Ann loves her garden and I get to see a lot more of her in the daytime now.

Wow, this place continues to impress for sure. This thread has served as a serious inspiration to me personally. Though unlikely to attain this level ever, it is awesome to see what can be accomplished. Quite amazing. I love the variety of items, reminds me of myself, I get into something, "conquer" it, and move on to the next collection or project. The scale and quality to which to accomplish this is beyond measure. Thank you for continuing to share your passion.

Thanks for those kind words Big Daddy.
People told me that I would get bored and be back in the collision business in less than a year after I retired but I'm just too busy lol

Don: as we age isn't it hard to have to do a project over that you thought would last 20+ years. unfortunately as we age and the project lasted 30 years it still needs to get pulled apart and re built. or even if the elements caused it to fail sooner. the good thing is we are still above dirt and able to do it or hire it out so best of luck with the dock.

since the cross beams are not rotted i'd almost consider replacing all the beams running the direction of the dock to making them all cross beams. i'd like to see bracket hangers on them, but since i doubt they get much weight on them probably not a big deal and screws or nails should hold fine.

didn't you say the river is low during the winter and maybe this project should have happened when there wasn't any water below it? or did i have that wrong. i have several projects that have been on some sort of TO DO LIST for a while so not criticizing and just asking. of course as hot as it is having your feet in the water while nailing in a few dock boards might not be a bad idea.

keep up the great work as always and glad to hear you and your guys got the new HOT ROD RUNNING.

Well Drives you are spot on about our old projects.
I plan on replacing each of the 2x8s with treated wood and hangers are a must (stainless this time) and the 2x12s running across the dock must go too so I ordered the 2x8s 2 feet longer to move the 2x12s to better wood
It will shorten the last set of boards by 4 feet

Having spent a good portion of my life building decks and docks, I'd say that end is the most common rot area no matter how it's built.

Hi Brent

I rebuilt the entire dock including the 4x12 runners back in the mid 90s and they still look pretty good and the trex top is still very usable so this will be a quick fix the end of the dock is where the waves break keeping it wetter than the rest of the dock.

Back on pg. 184 I mentioned that i'd picked up a vintage porto power set

2 by don long, on Flickr

I've been slowly working on it along with several other projects and today it's almost ready to display in the party garage.
Tomorrow the box goes out to be labeled again then it's done

Don, fantastic job as usual. I don't think I've ever seen a porta power with that many attachments or that came in a metal case. Great shape to be from the 40's.

Ann's garden looks amazing. She compliments you well.

Just stopping by to let you know I'm still paying attention just not always commenting.

Great job on the Porto Power!

So sorry to hear about the Zephyr. Maybe you need to let someone else tinker with it, somebody far away. Let me think, I can come up with somebody who would take care of it for you...

They sure aren't as much fun if you can't jump in and go to the drive-in for a shake at 10:00PM on the spur of the moment.

They don't build them like they used to! That has come out amazingly well. Props to you for a great restoration

Very nice. Are going to have the decals like the original?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Hi Shorty Thanks
The box is at my pin striper 's and he will paint the logos back on the box.
I gave him close up pictures of what was originally printed.

The original set came with 23 pieces but the guy I bought it from sent everything blackhawk he had including another pump and ram from a newer set. That's nice of you to mention Ann. She is a great motivator for sure.
It's good to know that you look in often.

Great job on the Porto Power!

Are you suggesting that I sent the Zephyr over to JB so his Cobra would have good company???
I have plenty of cars that I can jump into and roll.

Great job on the porta power:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

That looks fantastic. If you get time, could you please show us more pictures of the hanging wrenches?

Moon Tanner
I believe that this is your first time commenting on my thread, so let me welcome you to the party. Thanks for those kind words.
The hanging wrenches are part of my work bench hanging in wall mount Snap-On boxes. Here is a shot of the area

There are 10 boxes in all from a body hammer set to screw drivers to tune up and socket sets

And a close up of the wrench set. There is an identical set of metric wrenches to the right of these.

Don that came out looking fantastic!

Thanks Brett

Excellent job on the Porto Power Don. Looks fantastic!

Thanks Coop
I think it will be a good addition to the garage

I'm tired tonite
I spent the last 2 das creating a front yard for my friend that lives in my barn.
It is also the entrance to my wood shop and it sits just to the east of the garden. I wanted to enhance the surrounding area to the garden so
On the right side of the barn door we (my day laborer and I) cleared the area set a border wall and placed sod down. On the left side we cleared the area built a small retainer wall and placed the left over pavers from the garden project down to create a patio or sitting area. we also hung a nice vintage saw collection up.
Now the area looks finished except for the wall on the right side of the door.
I'm looking for something cool to hang there

Don, I don't remember your Snap-On collection being so complete and restored, thanks for posting that shot. Congrats on the new 'Rod, sorry to hear that the Zephyr isn't seeing any road time. I know that car is special, I know your talents and TENACITY, and I know you like a project done right: I'm hoping that you'll dig in and swear a bit and get 'er done, no 'Rod. no unfinished thing is a match for your talents, in the words of a real hero of mine: “Do. Or do not. There is no try.” Use the Force Don.:bow:

That's pretty good Andy

He'll be here all week, folks!

I think it will be longer than that Brent

Nothing of value to add, except that I continue to love everything you,get done Don.

The Portapower came out lovely, as does all your stuff.

Thanks Grizz

Nice work sprucing up the barn entrance Don. The street lamp is a very nice piece.

Thanks rmalkow
I still need to finish wiring up the light

Thank you Don! Those wall tool boxes are amazing!

The story behind those boxes:: I went to the "Indy 500" one year with pit passes and as I walked around the pits before the race I stumbled into the snap-on tent and those boxes were hanging on one wall. It was love at first sight so I walked up to a rep. and asked if they were for sale and to finish the story They shipped them to me the next week

The new addition Model A...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
NICE!

Thanks Homebody
I just decided on the place to display the "29 A" Right infront of the TEXACO gas station

Don,
I do believe that is exactly what he was suggesting, I'll take good care of it for you and even occasionally take it for a spin. :3gears: Thanks for thinking of me Andy!

Also great work on the Port-O-Power, those are very handy. I also really like the '29 A, what color yellow is that?

Not much to post of late
Been spending time in the shop working on the Vette.
I did pull this rusted relic out of my treasure box the other day.
Any guesses of what it is or was used for???

1 by don long, on Flickr

I think a good cleaning is in order.
Where would I find that rustoff product I keep reading about?

Thanks
Don

Don: the best things for removing rust without any damage to your old cast iron if you don't want to sandblast with glass beads is Electrolysis and here's a thread i asked a ton of questions and a lot of members answered so pretty much a HOW TO if you've never done it. it's pretty simple and fairly easy.

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=237752&highlight=homemade+electrolysis

a few other options that work are:
1) evaporust and i think i heard Amazon has the best per gallon prices and some guys re use it after filtering out the rust
2) Simple Green and WD 40 even work for surface rust
3) vinegar and be careful not to let it sit in this too long and rinse off and dry right away cause vinegar will start eating cast iron and maybe steel if left on it.

there probably are a few other methods and i'm guessing you've heard of most of them.

i don't have a clue what that is, but it looks like some sort of bender.

cheers and hope you had a great weekend.

Yep, asbestos siding shear. My house still is protected from weather by asbestos shingles and I have about 100 spare shingles. Great product, and no hazard other than in the name.

Don, jclem40c and Andy nailed it. It's funny how 60-year-old memories are so clear but where I left my keys two hours ago is so fuzzy.

The house I grew up in had asbestos insulation on all the steam heating pipes and the outside of the house was covered with asbestos shingles. An errant golf ball would dent or crack one so we had one of those shears in the garage. It was an antique when we got it from my uncle in the 1950s. In addition to shearing the shingles, that machine has a punch for making nail holes. When my father cut a hole in his office wall to install an A/C unit, some of the shingles had to be trimmed and then have new holes to nail the smaller pieces back in place. You didn't want to drill a hole in an asbestos shingle. Here's where the punch is located:

Thanks guys
It says right on it that it is an asbestos shingle cutter.
I had never heard of one before so I thought I'd give you guys a shot at guessing.

Thanks for the link. I will be blasting this one and painting it up.
I may use the wood shop and build a base from walnut wood to mount it on after lettering it.

Don: i'm sure whatever method you choose to spiff something up it will look AWESOME and probably a helluva lot better than most of us would be able to do.

BRETT: i always assume people (even the most knowledgeable ones like Don) are serious when asking a question unless they put a smiley face or some sort of funny emoticon behind the questions.

i bet even as much as Don knows he still has a few things to learn. i know i learn something here every day i log on which as you might know is quite often. i never thought i ever knew everything, but if i was telling my kids something and i wanted it done instead of giving them several good reasons i might have used the JUST BECAUSE STATEMENT a time or two.

glad you got a chuckle and i seriously thought he was kidding, but i have yet to see Don use Electrolysis which is a pretty nice method for removing rust off of old cast iron.

cheers
