Which one of you fellows got the little SALESMAN SAMPLE EMMERT of EBay?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/RARE-MINIAT...e=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649

That SOB was less than 50 miles from me...I should have found it Dammit!!!!! I never find anything good like Meatsis does!!! And I don't believe its a salesman's sample. there were no large Emmerts made in this style with that rotating ball on the bottom. I think it is just the smallest size Emmert made.

I picked up this Athol with a weird base. All the flat mount vises I've seen have a perfect 90 degree face to allow for mounting right against a work bench but this design doesn't allow for that...am I missing something?

Tone: even though i don't see your pictures i'm guessing that you have an older Athol and some of them had a more beefy static jaw that you can either mount on a piece of wood with the 45 degree cut out or if you are mounting to a wood bench you can cut your bench if the vise is a KEEPER.

here's my big Parker that has maybe a similar base.

Just lost the links due to the photobucket fiasco that's going on right now but you're exactly right about the base being the same as your parker. I assumed this was an older Athol as there is no big 'Athol' casting on the side like the 624 right behind it..thanks for the info. I'll be mounting it on my welding table so fabbing a 45 wont be an issue

Buddy, You can just host your pictures here.
Less Hassle, and the pictures will stay here, instead of the poster deleting them.
Makes it helpful for people researching years from now too.

Tone & BUB: Photobucket is starting to do this to a lot of the regular members that have a lot of pictures linked to here or other websites. they either want to be paid or they won't let them show up. the GJ option is another option, but currently there is a limit of i think 1,000 pictures which some of us could use up quickly.

i know i've said it before, but i'll say it again. I used to use the big Photobucket pictures on my posts here and on my Craigslist listings and loved their free service. if they wouldn't have changed a thing i would have gladly paid for it cause it was easy to use and it worked. after fiddling with their new modifications that didn't improve anything and all the ads or issues i opted for downloading pictures directly to GJ via the paperclip method and i get 7 pictures per post that you can click on twice to have full size. another benefit is if i die or quit paying my PB bill the pictures will stay with the threads so the threads will still have pictures for those that would like to read them later. nothing worse than spending quite a bit of time searching for a thread on a rare tool or machine and have all the pictures deleted cause the member didn't renew his PB account or maybe he passed and would have liked to know that his stuff was still here for us to enjoy or learn from.

anyway if you want to pay up PB to get your pictures that is an option, but what will they change next? Maybe GJ's picture limit could be lifted if a member asked, but not sure if that's possible.

Ton: good luck with the mounting and there are a few examples in this huge thread or ask over on the vise repair 101 thread where there are also a few examples and members might post their methods of mounting their old vises here or there.

Drives, I'm unaware of any picture posting limit on GJ, and I'm sure I'd have hit it by now...

Outlaw
I think Drives is referring to the GJ 7 photo limit per post. Sometimes this can be a bit challenging as one might have more than 7 photos to upload but for most part 7 photos are more than enough

No, he said 1,000.
Gee I didn't know of a limit.
It just bugs me when people post pictures here, from other hosts, and they are soon deleted. Especially when I am trying to research something.

007: thanks, but i was talking about the 1,000 picture limit on personal GJ albums that you can link to threads. i've yet to confirm it, but i've heard several members talk about it cause this latest PB fiasco is really playing havoc with the garage gallery threads that are really heavy picture loaded.

Outlaw: are you using the GJ album and linking pictures? if you are then i'm betting you are over the 1,000 picture posts cause i've seen about that many of yours just on the garage sale threads. i'll do a little more research and if you or anybody else knows for certain it might help the guys and gals wanting to switch from PB to GJ's album for linking their pictures.

thanks guys for the comments and hopefully we'll figure it out.

All: anybody else noticing how SLOOOOOOOOOOOW GJ's site is today or is it just me?

I have been looking up and down the FAQ section for value for the limit and the only reference that I found is a vague statement which does mention that there might be a limit but not what the limit is

Under the Title " Attachments and Images"

What files types can I use? How large can attachments be?

In the attachment window you will find a list of the allowed file types and their maximum sizes. Files that are larger than these sizes will be rejected. There may also be an overall quota limit to the number of attachments you can post to the board.

So it does not even say definitively that there is a limit (may be this is lawyer speak to cover all future bases) but rather it states "may be" and also it does not stipulate the possible limit.

Like Outlaw and you said, Outlaw should have way surpassed this limit as it looks like he has an impressive over 22,000 posts so if he had in 1 out 20 posts (5% of time) attached a SINGLE photo, he would have already been over the 1000 photo limit.

It was very slow all day for me but now it seems to respond much better

I picked up a Parker #202 over the weekend. It was covered in rust, but I could tell it had not been used much, just a few marks on the front jaw top. I think it turned out pretty nice. Does anyone know if approximate manufacturing dates for Parkers can be determined? All I can find is that these were made until at least 1929, according to a catalog.

Here is a before/after of the #202, a 4" Wilton Bullet, and also a cheap aluminum jewelers vise that I also repainted:

007: thanks for checking.

Outlaw: all those are in your GJ album? sounds like the 1,000 pictures limit is not enforced or maybe they gave you a pass.

Mike: yes Imgur has issues with GJ's classifieds section so they won't allow pictures to show unless you change a setting i've heard and looks like you fixed it.

All: hope you all have a great weekend and maybe find and buy or trade for a KEEPER.

cheers

No Drives, Again, my personal Album is EMPTY, Nada, Nothing... Those are all attachments directly to posts...

Exactly!
You don't have to use an album but can if you choose. You don't have to use a third party storage site. Just upload pics directly to the post and either attach them as thumbnails (small) or as inserted images (full size). Just size your photos before uploading them on your own computer.

I have always uploaded pics the same way Outlaw describes and it works fine.

Around 1900 to 1920s vise makers switched over to the squared off style. Dont know why. Athols are very, very nice vises.

Outlaw and RM: i found the area where GJ tells me how many pictures i have downloaded. BTW i take pictures with my cell phone then email to myself and download onto my laptop and then post up to 7 pictures at a time. i'm sure there is an easier way, but downloading pictures to GJ from my cell phone or Ipad has always had some sort of issue. i've never changed the setting on my pictures downloading them this way.

here's my GJ status:

You are currently using 1.37 GB to store 12,815 uploaded attachments.

ALL: if you want to put your pictures in a GJ album (i'm not sure exactly how to cause i haven't tried) and make links i think that is the one that works sort of like Photobucket and i've heard that GJ limits you to 1,000 pictures.

i'm getting PM's from members asking if i know why they can't download pictures from their phones and since a lot of you download pictures wondered if you might be having the same issue.

Vise Stands: I did pick up the BARBER CHAIR bases and they are heavy and look even better in person and i'm going to start a thread on them in vintage tools section cause i have a few questions on changing handle position, making them easier to roll around and what oil to use and how.

I have been uploading photo to GJ this way since I recently joined GJ. However if a lot of the members that were previously storing their images elsewhere all of sudden start switching to the direct load method, it might overwhelm GJ storage capacity and runs the risk of having GJ limits imposed (in the FAQ it say "may be imposed"). So perhaps having a more diverse storage strategy might be more prudent. Fore example like Joefriday and eddieK have stated they seem to be happy with

007: I agree putting everything on GJ might be an issue, but not certain. i know some sites have a Terabite's worth of memory so not sure we can ever fill it up. if you happen to look at a few threads over on Garage Gallery it's sad to see all the pictures downloaded with Photobucket that some member's have used their quota just blank pictures with PB asking for money.

good to know there are other options JoeFriday & EddieK can use for now and hope their rules don't change like PB's did.

RM: i had Tapatalk on an older phone and didn't like it. maybe when i get a new phone which might be a Iphone i'll try it again to save some time.

VICEMAN: those little clamp on vises to me are less useful than the old pipe vises you left laying on the ground and tables at sales in the past. some do have some style and THE LOOK, but in general they won't do much.

So I'm not sure why you are getting messages from guys who say this can't be done. Maybe they are just struggling with their phone or Tapatalk but, you can upload direct to GJ using either your computer or phone or other device.

I use Apple products so the step of emailing phone photos to myself is avoided because all my photos automatically transfer to my laptop via iCloud. So I just edit the photos as desired, save a copy of that final result and upload to GJ. If no editing is required then its even faster.

I do always save a copy of my upload photos in a separate folder on my laptop prior to uploading just to make sure I'm using the copy I edited for desired size and orientation, etc.

RM: yesterday and maybe the day or two before too GJ was running very SLOOOOOOOOOOW so that might have been part of the problem. yes my wife has had an Iphone 5, 6 and now a 7 or 8 or whatever # they are on so i'll probably be changing from my HTC Windows phone. others that have different brands of phones might have issues, but not exactly sure. thanks for the posts and hope it helps those that are having issues posting pictures of their cool vises and STUFF on GJ.

Shift: do you always use the thumbnail or paperclip?

Drives, Shiftless, et al:
When you are writing your post using the "Go Advanced" screen, select "Manage Attachments" located down just below the text writing area. Another box will pop up letting you upload up to 7 pictures for this post.
Then you can add them to your post in a couple easy ways.
1. Select the paperclip drop down menu to add your uploaded pictures as a thumbnail version only. This saves space in the thread and still allows readers to enlarge the picture by clicking on it.

Or
2. From the picture files in the Manage Attachment list, copy the link, choose the Insert Image button from the menu, then paste the link in the new line provided. This will insert the image in the actual size that you uploaded it originally. Repeat one at a time for all pictures uploaded.(Note: it will also include a thumbnail automatically.)

RM: thanks for the tutorial on how to download my thumbnails full size and still have the thumbnail option below. i guess i never understand the difference when Outlaw would go to the Advanced option which on my computer i need to scroll down to find when i could just click on the paperclip above where i'm writing my posts and get the thumbnails.

thanks for the 411. EDIT: i just used advanced and it worked the same as my paperclip thumbnail so i'll have to spend a bit more time on it to get the full size pictures. and i see RM put in the extra steps to follow so i'll try that later. got to run go find some cool stuff while picking up fresh raspberries.

Outlaw: i'm sure you tried to explain the difference to me many times and i just didn't GET IT. thanks for trying.

ALL: as Outlaw's method works similar to PB's or other online links and the pictures will always be on GJ as long as GJ is alive i think that i like that option the best.

Ten days ago, bought a Columbian 606 vise, plus a pair of vise stands made by prior owner.

Took me a bit to get both of the locking swivel handles removed, but got good advise and support from the Vise Repair 101 Thread.

Here is what vise looks like now Pics 1-2

As sweet as the vise was, it was the prior owner pair of homemade vise stands that caused me to buy them. Each is around 300 pounds and stand about 31 inches high.

Pic 3 is with one of the stands upside down.

Pic 4 is the other stand when upside down

Pic 5, 6 & 7 is with the Columbian temporarily attached to one of the vise stands. That's what I saw when I saw if for sale in front of a barn door ten days ago and had to have it.

Mike
