Vise was gifted, new garage build. He can't find the time or a stand to mount it.
I ask him to send some picks, which he did along with some links to similar. I think he is now interested to get it off the floor. BTW, not for sale he says
.

I believe oregonrockcrusher has a restored one of these! The swiveling jaws are crazy! I believe they are not cheap when you find them ... Even though it is not for sale did he hint at a price?

Rags to riches comparison. In fairness, I swapped the handle from a spindle that was damaged...big difference.

Well I offered to trade up too larger machinist vise. He said no.Then he sees the EBay listing @3500+.
Not bad for a $50 find from the gifter for a garage warming gift.
Only thing he hinted at was no.
I hope he puts it to use.

Here is mine, The brand is GL and it's made in Japan. I got it off of the OfferUp app for $10. It has the inserts for holding pipes too. I am happy with it, given it a few beating and it had held up. I'll upgrade eventually but I am happy for now.

Are you from the land down under? ;-) I flipped it over for you. You're welcome.

I hope that all had a great 4th.

I was given this little vise for free by a lady at work. It looks like this is a Dunlap 2.5" bolt on vise but I can not find any 411 on it. I did find a nice timeline for Dunlap brand posted long back by Outlaw (thank you Outlaw)
http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?p=2529104)
which would date vise between 1940-1960.

In any case when I tried to remove the cork screw, I noticed that there is a pin on one side (see photo with pen pointing to the pin) that is holding the screw in place. It is conceivable that the screw has a channel which this pin goes through, holding the screw in place (attached to dynamic jaw). However I do not see the pin coming out from opposite side of the dynamic jaw (or the paint is covering the end of pin on that side- see photo). So I have some questions
1-Does anyone know if the pin goes all the way through and hence can be punched out?
2- If not, short of drilling the pin, is there any other way (pin is too small to weld something to it and try to pull it out this way)?
3- Are the two "slide" rods screwed into or pressed into the dynamic jaw (ie how these rods can be removed from the dynamic jaw)?

Any help is much appreciated

007: you might want to post up your questions over on the vise repair 101 thread too cause there isn't a lot of information on that thread about these small clamp on vises. sorry i don't love these even though i own more than a few and i haven't spent any time on spiffing any of mine up so best of luck.

Fretters: you know that once you start buying real made in USA VISES your vice for vises addiction will take on a whole new size and addiction level. remember that idea you had of building a new shed where your garden is? well if your better half agrees i'd start breaking ground and building it cause you'll need it.

your linseed oil, beeswax and stuff concoction looks pretty sweet. just curious is the one you put shoe polish on a couple years ago still holding up?

cheers

Waltrip: yep you did ok with your little baby bullet purchase. nice find!!

I succumbed to temptation. :D It'll be my first American vice, and with it being a BIN, thought I might as well.

I have several American ones, couple little ones, the fixed base Morgan, the rotating Parker and a couple swivel jaw, swivel base ones, although the condition is rough on those, so I really dont need anymore, if something comes up local for sensible money that would be different.

I can see why you might not have ever taken a liking to these, it is like having some nice Perl handle early Colt 45 (your big Reed, Wilton, Parker etc) and comparing it to a cheap tin can Derringer (these little guys). But I can actually put this to good use for finer and smaller pieces which more substantial vises could crush to death. This one for its size seems to be fairly solidly made.

Hey guys, heres what i picked up today. An old Milhoff vise in great shape. Fully welded USA steel. Jaws are also in good shape. Looks like 50 years of dust on it.

It has some stiff competition to contend with. :D

The Ball Base was holding up fine last time I checked it.

Seemed to recall you'd already got some US ones. It's an itch I've been wanting to scratch for a while, and a vice which only has two mentions in the Vises thread seems a good candidate to start with. :D Can't wait to see how this ex-colony,, stuff compares to ours.

007: i know there are uses for them and i actually have a few clipped on a bench or they work good sometimes on a sawhorse. you are right about being a bit spoiled cause if i want to take the time to sit and work on something small my Wilton baby bullet with it's power arm and clamp to easily move the power arm around is AWESOME.

cheers

Bcom: i'm hoping to find one of those in the wild one day. It would be my made in America version of the CWV (Chinese Wonder Vise) cause my little Desmond is a bit small and and would be more for easy work or the shelf.

WELL DONE and thanks for posting the ad with your vise

In the name of national pride we do not want Fretters to start his critique of US made vises with one of an inferior quality, so we need to ensure he has access to a decent one.

I have a suggestion :), WE (notice the royal WE) should start him with a baby Wilton. This suggestion has several merits
1- Baby Wilton is small and cost of shipping across the pond will be cheaper
2- Wilton is a very decent US brand
3- I do not have one of these so I can not help

Now I am wondering who has a baby Wilton and has no time to attend to it :), I volunteer this gentleman patriot to uphold the colonial nation pride by donating his baby Wilton for this worthy cause to show the English what colonies can do.

I am sure Fretters will not mind this arrangement at all, do you mind Fretters ?

Fretters
PS- I can not cash a check (or is it cheque?) that is made in pounds, pls make sure it is in Yankee colonial $.

PS
please do not hate me, I am just looking after the best interest of the nation by spending someone else's money (no wait, I can not do this, I am not a politician)

Pah, Wilton. I have the grandaddy of those; York's. :D

On a tangent, asking the wife to not let you collect any more unnecessary items doesn't always work as planned. Guess whom told me about, and collected for me whilst I was at work, this little number. I'm thinking she's not quite got the gist of this dissuasion thing yet. :D

Currently pretty much rusted solid, but general condition appears sound. A Record 112.

Could mine be related to that Peddinghause?

007: you had me smiling and worried Fretters would want my only baby bullet. good thing YORK made some good vices so he hasn't got the Wilton bug (yet). :bounce:

FRETTERS: gotta love it when mama brings home a VICE especially one that has THE LOOK and not that new cheap stuff.

does this mean that she will and does approve the big shed out back if you might want to build one. :dunno:

Sandman: as VA says that some nice Fe (element name for IRON for those that don't know). looking forward to seeing more pictures of your stuff anytime you might have time to take a few more pictures and post them. cheers

Hello 6Pony6 yes sir u have a fine example of a pre WW2 German leg vise. If u notice the heavy support plates make up a guide track and help to stablize the dynamic jaws movement. From what i can tell the attachment plate style is what identifies it as peddinghause, also these are about the most durable leg vises out there.Just in case this leg vise ever needs a new home i have 6 of them it would never get lonesome! oh what is the jaw width Sandman

Nearly finished stripping the Craftsman 506-51810. The dynamic jaw is getting it's last soak before it gets the same cleanup. It's not a bad looking vise - this this one is going to get a coat of Linseed oil as it is very clean. Not sure if this will be going on eprey or not....my old man has shown some interest once he saw the Union Parker I restored for my brother.

I also started work on the Athol/Starrett 924 - I decided on a hammered Copper rattlecan paint job just because it would be a bit unusual. The blue crinkle paint on this vise is very tough and really does not want to come off.

It is a 104-1/2 S

Gotcha...that's a nice size. I had a slightly older 204 1/2R that was one heck of a stout vise. I still don't know why they changed and went from 20X being swivel and 10X being fixed to all being 10x...seems odd after all those years.

MB: i didn't see what your final bid was for your NOS Columbian that you were selling last week, but hopefully you got your money back that you spent and maybe a little gravy.

sorry to hear about you losing a battle with your boss and hopefully you'll find a better job soon or go to work for yourself.

VERT: you have only JUST BEGUN. :D

i would say you have a rash rather than a full on vise addiction with only 6 cause some of us have more than that many attached to benches and we're using them. just keep yours eyes open and i'm certain you'll find another one or two or several to bring home as you maybe find spots or other good homes to pass the ones you don't want to keep.

GMan: i agree was it easier changing the S & N in the mold than the 1 & 2. GO FIGURE??? :willy_nil

Agree on the size as it is my go to vise along with a 3 inch bullet for smaller tasks on the other bench.

Final bid was $92. I thought it'd do better, honestly. After fees it was about break even - I went into the red figuring my time and gas money.
