An expensive day for me today. I'll have to post later. I'm in 4yo birthday party hell.
This one is just for the family, she's doing it again for friends next weekend. KMN !

So I scored this lot on Friday after work at a local estate sale for $20.
There is 2 - SK 3/8" ratchets, 2- Proto brass hammers, a neat old Craftsman 3/8" ratchet (that still works nicer than their new stuff) 2- really nice machined steel clamps, plus a few smaller C clamps, a older cast steel Craftsman adjustable square, a Craftsman plane, A Nib Craftsman 6" wire wheel, a brass round block and a couple older American Air blower and inflator. Not a bad haul for the trip home from work. Unfortunately I just missed the 6" Columbian vise that sold for $50.... bummer.
Dang work is always interfering with my picking[emoji38]

Interesting day, minimal tools for sure...

First up was a Revere Ware Coffee pot. All there, but used. and a Griswold No 6 skillet.

The copper cleaned up nice:

Those came from a number of places, The Flares, Toyota Pliers, and Case & Old Timer pocket knives, were from one place at seven bucks. the patches were free at another, and the clamps and SS butchers glove from an Estate sale for a buck all told.

attachment.php

I also picked up three pairs of jeans my size, for $2 a pair. (Not shown; I forgot to take a pic...)

and last was this cargo.dog rack for a smaller SUV for $5.

Glad to see you other guys are scoring some tools! two small clamps and Toyota pliers is a pretty weak showing!

Some very nice scores, gents!

Here are my contributions. SWMBO said "We need to do some work at my office today. Why don't you look for a few sales on the way there and we'll go together before hitting the office?"

I do love that woman!

First sale was a bit out of the way, but she was game so off we went. We rolled up to this estate sale 45 minutes after opening and there were still people waiting around with entry numbers who hadn't gotten in yet. When I pulled numbers for SWMBO and myself, we got numbers 99 and 100 and the gate man called for 68, 69 & 70. So, I figured all the good stuff was long gone, but SWMBO and I found some shade and chatted while we waited. It didn't take long, and we were in after another 15 minutes.

I made a bee-line for the garden shed, looking for a garden hoe (we only came up with a broken one during yard work last weekend). Lots of shovels, all marked $3 to $5 each. I examined 2 Craftsman axes before spotting a shorter axe handle hiding in the back along the wall. I fished it out and immediately knew I had something special--a Plumb Champion ax. I didnt know how special until another guy joined me in the shed as I continued to scan for a hoe.

I said "There's gotta be a hoe in here somewhere." The other guy said "Yeah, I was looking for one earlier."

"Aha," I said, as I reached into a forest of handles and fished out a hoe.

"Well done," he said. "Can't believe I missed that. Did you find that ax in here, too? Can I see it?"

I flipped it over to show him the logo and his eyes bugged out.

"I'm an ax collector and I combed thru this shed earlier --I can't believe I missed that!" He whipped out his phone an did an Ebay search right there. These axes are selling for $60 to $150, with the double bit axes fetching more than two bills.

"If you don't want that, I'll take it!"

I assured him I did want it. :)

I walked through the garage and house, adding a hacksaw blade holder, a neat Arrow razor scraper, and a 50-foot Stanley tape measure. The ax collector offered to take the Plumb off my hands at least two more times, but in the end congratulated me on a great find.

When I checked out, the lady behind the table gave me a price of $12 for everything. "Sold," I said!

We stopped at two more sales, and scored six paperbacks for $5 (not pictured). I'll take three of them on a big Boy Scout canoe trip next month. At under a dollar apiece, I won't care if they accidentally get wet.

Overall, a great morning with my favorite girl!

As I mentioned earlier, it was an expensive day today. I ended up spending a total of $134.25 and drove around 64 miles for only 5 stops. It was the last stop that killed me.

The first stop was a bust, so off to the second. Not much for me there, but sitting in the middle of the garage was a heavy metal machine stand that I couldn't leave behind.

Stop 2 - $15.25
unknown (possibly Delta ?) machine stand
25¢ hot wheels stealth fighter 117A for my nephew. (no pic, it was confiscated as soon as he saw it)

100_2566.jpg 100_2567.jpg

Stop 3 was at a family run estate sale. The gentleman's hobby was making wooden clocks. Tools were sparse, and mostly dedicated to his hobby. The family had sold the (small) house and were clearing everything out cheap to get rid of it. Most was in the driveway and in the small detached garage. I met another guy I compete with and the race was on. He was pleased that he got to the jointer first, but I already have one, so I got to the carry toolbox before him. Mostly junk and Craftsman G series sockets (I won't touch them), but I did find a few keepers.

Stop 3, part 1 - $4
Fulton fractional drill bit holder
4-step pulley, 1/2" arbor, 5"-2"
Cman 2" pulley, 1/2" arbor
unknown 1-3/4" pulley, 1/2" arbor
SK #45170 3/8dr ratchet
SK #45116 3/8dr 6pt 1/2" socket
SK-Wayne #45116 3/8dr 6pt 1/2" socket
SnapOn SW-340-1/2 1/2dr 12pt 1-1/16" socket

100_2578.jpg

The date stamp on the SO socket is difficult to decipher. It may be mis-stamped ?

100_2577.jpg

After loading my truck .............. I went back in to check out the house. Nothing interesting but ....
The cellar door was in a traffic way, and was closed. After asking, I was told that there was nothing down there but I was free to look anyway. As they said, basement was mostly empty except for a weight bench and an (almost) empty workbench in the corner.

There it was ! [insert angels singing soundtrack here] . Sitting loose on the bench was a beautiful sight. I lovingly cradled it as I carried it up the stairs and outside to get a price. My competition was shocked, he hadn't gone to the basement. I was afraid to ask the price, but I garnered my courage and was told $3. :yikes:
I gave the guy $5 and told him to keep the change while I hoofed it to my truck to make my getaway. :3gears:

Stop 3, part 2 - $5
Columbian #73-1/2 Gyro-Vise 3-1/2" jaw w/ pipe jaws !

100_2579.jpg 100_2582.jpg

And then it was off to the last two stops .....................

The 4th stop for the day was a waste of time. The seller changed his mind and moved the sale to tomorrow, after I had already mapped out my day. It was in one corner of my range, and the last stop was all the way out on the other corner. A complete waste of time and gas.

The last stop made up for it though, but I wonder what I missed while I was chasing the wild goose.

Stop 5 was at an upholster/awning shop. The guy was getting out of fabrication and moving towards Installations for others only. Nine's, he had sewing machines, foam cutters, etc. for sale. Top shelf.
I only picked up 3 pieces, but it still cleaned out my wallet.

Stop 5 - $110
unknown Industrial foot operated Snap/Rivet Setter (hoping to change the dies for tarp grommets)
Olympic #1410 wire length meter (for measuring bulk wire, rope, or cable) (wall mount)
Hot knife styrofoam cutter (German made and labeled)

100_2564.jpg 100_2565.jpg 100_2570.jpg

I could use some help from our German speakers to decipher the labels on the hot knife for Maker and model number.

100_2571.jpg 100_2572.jpg

I'm super stoked about the rivet setter. This thing is built like a tank and weighs a ton. I had to use a dolly to move it from the truck. I make my own tarps (alter HF silver tarps) to cover my storage tents. It's cheaper to put a tarp on than to try to find and pay for a new cover every few years. I have a cheap Chinese bench/hand grommet setter (has Chinese characters on it), but if I can find the right dies to change the new one over to grommets, this will be a time saver.

We used to use a hot knife like that to cut and trim industrial carpet to cover museum display stands. Lots of burned fingers on the melted edges. We used a similar machine to cut rope when I was working at the Hardware store.

Trust me Nine, you would have drowned in drool at what the guy was selling.
His prices were steep, but within the realm of reasonable for what he had.

Made the mistake of mentioning to the wife that I saw perfume at one of the sales I went to yesterday, so back we went this morning to a no-tool sale. There had been a ton of antiques there, just not my taste in treasures. But today was half-off day so what the heck. She picked up some Rosevillle pottery(?) and a couple perfumes, while I picked up the following for $17:

Should go nice with my roll top desk, now that I have my own business and work from home.

We then went to an antique fair, picking up this print:

We are in the middle of buying a bungalow, so antique buying is the name of the day, that and I am pretty tooled up. Afterwords, headed out to the coast for chowder.

I had a couple of sales planned today because they advertised "tools." Both were complete busts. I decided to check out unadvertised sales, since there were so many this weekend. After several dry holes, I stumbled across an "outlaw" sale. I say outlaw because the City requires a license for having a garage sale, and provides an a-frame sign in the deal. This sale had no sign or posted license.

There was a makshift table with a sign "Make Offer" posted, and it had a bunch of rusty old tools. I picked through the pile and came away with the following for $5.00: P&C 7/16 8-point socket, P&C 9/16 and 5/8 combination wrenches, Snap-On F-71 3/8 ratchet (rusty but works fine), import 1/2 impact extension, SK 3/8 extension, Proto 5/16 combination, Truth 1-5/16 3/4 drive socket, and a Truth 3/4 drive "push-through" ratchet.

My next good stop was a local church youth group fundraiser sale. I found a good shovel, a steel hose hanger in excellent condition, and an overrunning clutch for the PTO on my Ford 8N tractor, all for $5.50. (not pictured)

Finally, I called a friend to tell him about some reloading stuff at one sale and he told me he had picked up some P&C and Barcalo wrenches for me. It was all in a later sears carry box, and included: P&C 9/16 and 5/8 combination wrenches, a set of Barcalo DOE wrenches from 1/2 to 7/8, two Hinsdale 45/64 x 13/16 DOE wrenches, a Vlchek (identified by the v in a shield marking) otherwise unmarked 5/8 x 3/4 DOE wrench, a 1/2 x 9/16 DOE from a Ford tool kit, a little Billings & Spencer DOE marked for 1/8 nuts, and a Pres-to-lite wrench for carbide lamps. There were quite a few sockets, including Craftsman 1/4 drive 3/16 to 1/2, 3/8 drive from 3/8 to 3/4, and a mixed set of 1/2 drive from 5/8 to 1 in.. All the sockets, plus some SK and asian ones, were in a smaller box that is yellow with a black lid. There was also an Apex 1/4 hex to 3/8 square adapter with a 1/2 hex magnetic socket, and a Snap-On 3.8 drive deep industrial socket.

An unusual item in this group is a wood-handled double-ended hex driver. It has a 5/16 hex on the end marked "L" and a slghtly smaller hex on the end marked "S". It is stamped either "110" or "011" in the middle of the handle, which is retained by a cross-pin.

Prov, I'm curious: What is the driver for the GS licence? Sales tax? What does the licence cost? What is the fine if you get busted? Is this common in Oregon?

The city got tired of people putting up signs on poles and such, then leaving them to rot and look messy. The fee is $5.00, but for that you get an a-frame sign to put out to lead people to your sale. All in all, it isn't a bad deal. It costs the city more to provide the signs and keep track of them than the revenue it produces.

I don't think anyone expends much effort to enforce anything but signs. The ordinance targeted ugly signs. I don't know of other cities that do this, but I believe that some smaller ones do. Big cities don't.

There is no sales tax, state or local, in Oregon.

Must have been Dallas (Oregon). I have a love/hate relationship with sales in that town. You get the sandwich board signs along with main roads, but nothing else to help you find the sale! On the other hand, I have had some amazing finds in Dallas!

JakeMac - that SO socket looks late 1940s, so I think it's a bad strike of a 1947.
BlueBomber - very cool logo on that Plumb Champion.

Drove 2-1/2 hours, past mediocre yard sales of onesies and cologne bottles, to get to a family reunion (descendants of my great-grandparents). When I was a child and my ggm still living, we had it on her farm, which was fun to explore...now it's at a forested lake, so that's good too.
Along the way, there was one sign promising "flea market" but no evidence visible from the road, so I chalked it up as a sham to lure innocent victims into a cannibal's den. Anyway, no stops today, but I did get to visit with uncles, aunts, cousins, niece & nephew, before the skies opened up and dumped a deluge. Chance of rain was 10%, so I guess we beat the odds. Spending a few days visiting my parents, so good chance at a couple sales outings with my like-minded Pop.

a neat old Craftsman 3/8" ratchet (that still works nicer than their new stuff)
1940's, made by Husky/New Britain

Pvt Lugnutz-you may be interested in this box that a local used tool store has:
I don't collect much outside of mechanics tools and tool-sets, but I am a sucker for boxes when I see them at fleas or estate sales, especially with well-preserved labels. Shipping prohibits buying them anywhere else, but I appreciate the tip.

Jake: That is one sweet axe marking!

Brian

Many sellers put their address on the sandwich boards by taping paper to the board, which helps. Others park a car with a sign on it at a spot to lead you to the sale. People adapt!

I believe that the ordinance is kind of elitist, but I remember that the home-made signs left a mess because sellers rarely took them down after the sale.

P.S. I forgot to include the Snap-On F71 ratchet in my description of my $5 purchase yesterday.

- Post-war/KW-era pintle hook

Went to the flea market, 3 stops, and 2 TOO's.

Only the FM had anything. All the others were a waste of time. The last stop had a sign at the end of the driveway. SALE CANCELLED.

Spent $2 at the FM.

So, I still have no idea what the homemade t-handle 3/8" square female tool is for...

I looked up the Wright 353 set. They still make it, just with a crappier case. To buy it new would be $70-75ish... which makes me like it even more. I like the vintage metal Wright and SK boxes.

I must've missed your original post, ecotec, so my apologies if I am missing some context, or if someone already mentioned this, but my guess would be some kind of adjusting nut on a machine or a tank or some other piece of equipment. It's like a homemade version of the little single open end or t-handle wrenches that were made for that purpose, turning a single bolt or nut but very often. This piece was probably kept in a drawer or somewhere else next to it. Just my $.02 hunch.

A couple items found at the local Salvation Army Store. No hand tools this week but a full tank of propane for $.99 and a model of the old style Hemi engine for $5.99.
It's a dual 4 bbl carb HEMI!!! How could I leave that behind? Has rotating internals and everything.

Provincial -nice Truth!

Looking good everyone. No sales for me. I'm scaling back a bit at the moment. I have a move in the works.
