The original color appeared to be a very dark sort of battleship gray. The jaws and slide are in excellent condition.

Is there any way to get an approximate manufacture or made before date on this based on the base? I have seen some 614 1/2 with the completely flat base but this one has the protrusion on the bottom.

Best,
Rob

Nice job Rob. Did you drill out the rivots and replace with new ones? Athol's are close to the top of quality vise's I have worked on. That one is one of the first ones built since the jaws are not replaceable and before the swivel bases were used. the newer 614-1/2's have replaceable jaws.

Thank you.

I polished up the plate with "Never Dull", taped it off, and painted around it. Like I've said before; I have no patience for long projects.

The "Never Dull" did thin out some of the original black finish on the plate but it's hard to remove paint and crud without removing paint...if you know what I mean. Hard to remove one paint and leave another.

Overall I'm good with it.

Best,
Rob

I couldn't pass this Beauty up for 40 bucks. Pretty sure the jaws are worth that much

Anyone in W MI interested in this older (I think) "double vise"? I don't recall seeing one like this before, tho I'm not any sort of expert.
Sheldon Co Bench Vise. Not sure if it's worth the $90 being asked :dunno:

Don't think it's a real early one, the older ones had a protrusion with about a 45 degree angle, requiring a corresponding notch in the face of the bench. Have a 614 like that, had to notch the bench. Yours is a little newer, being able to be placed against the front of the bench without notching.

Thank you. I have a Athol 613 with 45 angle you are talking about.

Thanks Smokes, I didn't even know the tag was on it when I agreed to purchase it so that was a nice added bonus to me as a militaria collector.

Best,
Rob

I have a Sheldon similar to the one you posted. I have it mounted to my sharpening bench. It's nice and versatile but I don't consider it heavy duty.

That's interesting with the side crank handle. Here is mine, it might be a bit smaller than yours.

Nice! Have you find any info on yours? Mine does have a stamp but I could never find anything on it. I have a old pic of a ad that has one in it but it's cropped out and you can only see a small piece of the vise.

A rare CL find. A Craftsman 5195 joined the family today. It is in good shape and has entered the refurb queue.

Tink, Members are obviously interested with 219 visits to your info page. Do you only collect really cool small vises or have you got some large ones also ? :dunno: :headscrat

I'm not sure what ya mean " 219 visits to your info page ". I have some bigger ones that are post vises and a 6" PW bench vise. But really not monsters as of yet. I mainly collect hammers. I just started collecting vises about a year or so ago.

The magnet was getting bored, so I set it to "B" which is for British vices, and turned the amperage down hoping for something big. It reeled in a Paramo No. 6 on a swivel base. The seller threw in a couple little guys and a trolley track anvil for good measure.

Hard to complain about a 6" paramo

I agree! I've been looking for a nice 6" Record, Paramo or Parkinson's for a while. The only thing bad about this one is the jaws are smooth (made that way) but I know the jaws from a Wilton 1760 will fit. My plan is to go through it completely, strip, prime, paint, and put a set of Kevin's jaws on it. I'm toying with the idea of a new handle as well....take up up a notch!

Vega was absorbed by Lockheed in 1943. Based on it being DPC, I would think the vise is 1942-1943.

Sheldon Co Bench Vise. Not sure if it's worth the $90 being asked :dunno:

Here's what weird about that vise. Sheldon came out with it. A year and a half later Wilton applied for a patent for what was essentially the same vise https://www.google.com/patents/US3007358 Everything Wilton claimed as their new invention already could be purchased with the Sheldon vise. Wilton began selling the vise marked patent pending and Sheldon, instead of continuing their earlier vise design, switched over to the Wilton style vise with the same patent pending mark. It appears they gave up their design to Wilton and Wilton began making both Wilton and Sheldon vises in the same design.

I have a Sheldon with the patent pending mark showing Wilton's patent. $90 is a good price for it. Its a very useful addition to a workbench.

Neat little post vise. The jaws are 9/16 wide. The other vise on top has 5/8 wide jaws.

Found this thread while trying to date my Record vices. Tried flowers, dinner and the cinema, no luck. I decided instead to take some pics of my vices and throw them up here, because vices.

First up my two Record no. 4 vices. The one on the left is bolted down, the one on the right is a newer acquisition, and I am contemplating doing a full refurb, including sourcing the original blue, with this.

Secondly my little no.0, also not bolted down, but thats more to do with the fact that its really handy to be able to move it wherever I need it, especially for small work like soldering etc

Happily, all three are "Made in England"

Awesome vise, congrats. I use the same model as my primary vise at work. If you do a restoration, consider adding a roller thrust bearing as that is a weak point on those vises (VICES). I did mine awhile ago and I highly recommend it.

Let me be the first to say you **** ! Very nice condition ! You probably paid $5 or something stupid like that [emoji2]

After I posted this I decided I had had enough and decided to join the fun! I picked up this 5196 last night off Craigslist for $125... The guy was firm on his price and after seeing it I understand why! These vises are very well built! More like tanks and are worthy of their reputation and following! I will clean it and put it to use! Rileysan gave me a heads up on it! In a normal setting he would have bought it himself but he has been so busy buying craftsman mid and lower red and grey boxes that he was tapped out on funds[emoji16] thanks again for the heads up rileysan!

Thanks...that makes a lot of sense. I think it's a good candidate for a full restoration so I'm leaning towards that. It'll probably get a set of Kevin's jaws as well

I sell most of the vises I fix up, but I've been looking for something on the large side to mount to one of my benches...this might be the one.
