This is my most recent vise purchase- a Record No. 1, with 3" jaws, opens up to 3 1/4". Was in decent condition when I bought it, just cleaned off the usual old paint, crud, old grease and light rust. The tommy bar had a grind cut, almost half way through which I welded up and ground/ filed back to shape. Fitted with copper soft jaws and mounted to a timber block to be fixed in my woodwork bench when I want to use it. Shown on top of my old Paramo No. 3 for size comparison. This is my 7th vise purchase and it all started here on Garage Journal!

Are you sure thats a 1983? Maybe try to re-read the date code. Thats a new style wilton bullet. If it were a 1983, it would have a different rear and cap.

the date on the stamp is either 1/83 or 1/88. it is very lightly stamped

Ok, here it is.
Picked up this unmarked 1-7/8" vise at the flea market this morning. The seller wanted $30. I talked him into $25, plus throwing in a 36mm SK socket as well.

The seller claimed it was a Prentiss. Since Prentiss made unmarked vises for others to sell, it's plausible. I'll let the peanut gallery decide.

The jaw inserts are non-replacable.
It's missing a base, but otherwise in great shape under the surface rust.
The main screw and nut are fine threads.
Someone stuck a pin in to hold the nose on, but didn't trim it. That will need to be fixed.
The main nut is held in place by two screws from the bottom.

I'll need some help figuring out the age and model number.

Currently at an auction barn waiting for a Toledo scale to come up. Noticed this guy out on one of the hay racks for later in the day.

If it doesn't end up going too late what's a ballpark to be bidding here? It's a Chas Parker 954. Lot bigger than the other vise I have.

Firworks, I don't know if anyone got back to you, and the auction is probably over now.

3.5 inch to 5 inch vises are the most common and easy to find + Parker is also pretty common among the old USA vises. So you have an excellant vise that should not be difficult to find another if you don't win that one.

I would say anything up to $50, you are very good. If you really want it, a few $$$ more is OK but anything over $75 would be too much in my opinion.

Of course where you live also determines price and how easy it is to find a given vise.

Here is an interesting vise that showed up at a local swap meet. A 6" swivel back jaw "Wilton"? What's the consensus on this? The swivel jaw design is very American scale style. Couldn't find it in a catalog yet. Name plate appears to be cast in and not added. Ed.

Searched the thread and didn't see any mention of a Record 114, so I figured I'd some pics. It was in pretty rough shape when I picked it up, I'm just starting into a clean up on it. Also a leg vice, can anyone tell me where to look for identifying it?

So this thing just came up for sale near where I am. I'll probably never see one again up here, looks to be in pretty good shape. Guy wants $245 Canadian dollars, what do you guys think? If I had the money to blow on another vise I don't need I'd already have bought it but times is tough. Maybe you all can convince me.

Also found this ginormous Parker No 60x. Jaws look kinda funny and it looks like that handle is not original. $350 and a ten hour round trip for me. I think I'll have to pass.

AngryBeaver, Re your 181 Prentiss base. I have the 185 and the swivel base is marked 97 (as in Prentiss model #97) Both are 7" jaw vises. It's very possible a model 90, 91, or 92 Prentiss swivel base would fit yours. These bases are also on the Monarch line of Prentiss Vises. Maybe someone has one for sale from a broken vise. You found it! When I saw it, I knew it was unusual. Glad you took it home!

I'll state the obvious: The model number "600 S.J." almost certainly means Swivel Jaw. The seller had no idea what a swivel jaw was, let alone the fact that vise had one. I would have sworn it was a Prentiss or Rock Island vise.

I was glad it was still there. It does need some repair to the screw and nut but doable. Still not sure what it is either but here are a few more pics with a Rock Island 577 for scale. No small 6" this one. Ed.

It's a beast of a vise! If not for the screw, I would have bought it at his asking price.

If you ask my opinion, which no one has, I think this is the best looking vise Wilton ever made

Drives sold one of those Wilton 606s to VA birdman I believe. Definitely not made by Wilton, a rebrand from I forget who.

Just finished cleaning this vise up to paint, it's super raw but was liking the look so I put it back together. It's been a while since I tackled a full vise restore. I think Kevin's (KMScott) hex swivel locks would have been perfect for it.

Sadly I let it go to another home. I have strong regrets, I already had a C0 bolted to my bench but it's not as nice as this one. Such as life.

Rock crusher, you can see one in the (Wilton 600 S. J. (Swivel Jaw), thread, and Drivesitfar had one that you can see in the (Who made this 170 pound Wilton Swivel Jaw vise that has 6 inch jaws??), thread.

As far as I know yours is only the 3rd 600 S.J. to surface to date.---And as best we can figure, A. S. made them for Wilton or Wilton borrowed their design.

The A. S. #79 is a 6'' swivel jaw of the same design but is 190 lbs..
