Charles Parker Model No. 436.

Hope it's okay to post this, since it's not mine ( OMG I wish it was, but way out of the range of what I can pay for a vise ). This is on the local Craiglist:

Vintage Charles Parker Railway vise model No. 436. Built early in the 1900s, jaws are 6" wide and open to 10". There is cosmetic rust but it is all intact and in good working order. The vise also comes with custom shipping crate and weighs 187 lbs. Reasonable offers also considered, no low ballers. This is an excellent vintage vice.

This is the coolest vise I think I've seen.

I could be wrong but there seems to be a garage sale sticker on it that says $30 (it is upside down, so I rotated the sticker- see attached photo). So may be someone got it for $30 from a garage sale and now is flipping it for $900, Nice!

Wait till I show you guys what I'm trying to sneak in the house. I have it in a shipping crate on my trailer. I have a buddy coming Tuesday to help me get it in the house. If I can get it set up in my study SWMBO will think its one of my vises that I've always had. The problem is it has a really cool stand. She might notice that. I don't want her to think that this is a vase vise w/stand.

No way, that AS is awesome, way cooler than any of my vises.

Thank you..

I have a few observations as a rookie vise picker-upper regarding these larger vises.

1. They are bigger in person than they appear in pictures.
2. They are very hard to work on and lug around.

With the above newly acquired knowledge in mind, I think I may look for smaller vises.

Best,
Rob

Just picked up this Parker 974-1/2 in great shape. Lots of life left in the jaws too.

Bcom that's a sweet Parker. I supplied this one at work and was lucky enough to mount it on a stand next to my 2 bays. A lightly used Parker in mint condition is a real joy to use. They are one of the best vises out there IMO. Here it is after Wiping it down. Still has most of the original paint.

Joe: I couldn't agree more my recent acquisition of two 6" vises totalling #275 are extremely impressive and super cool. But they are just a nightmare for a mortal man to deal with moving around and working on.

Ha..I was excited for you when I saw what you picked up but also feeling bad for your back.

I guess I would still pick up some more big ones but I would hope to not have to work on them. I originally planned not to paint my AS 66 but when I found the USN stamp on it, I decided that I wanted to restore it to it's USN used color which I could see traces of under the yellow.

Best,
Rob

I feel sorry for you. There's no way I'd want to move a 4C. I wouldn't take one for free.

Best,
Rob

PS. Damn! I'm flat out lying. I need a 4C:eek:

Speaking of that, when are you going to finish that Prentiss ?
Boy, at the rate I been goin' it'll probably be wrapped up sometime in 2032. I've got at least 8 that are in front of it, but I might actually have to get it up and running to work on the RI 577. Really only a few steps left, just got a million things going on with newish house and baby. The Wilton C1 takes care of almost everything I need to do while the P98 has really turned out to be more of a show pony. I've got a C2 and C3 in queue, thinking I might end up with the C2 and lose the others ... really seems like it might be the perfect vise. Wasn't really too interested in Wiltons when I started getting them for resale, but they have definitely grown on me.

You guys and all these cool vises are making me jealous. I went from wondering what all the hubbub was about over in this thread to reading it religiously every day. Now all I want to do is find a big, heavy badass vise to restore but it seems out here in the desert southwest they are far and few between.

Thanks guys. Before I went and got it, the seller only gave me one crappy photo of it so I was making a trip based on hope. Hoping it wouldn't be a pos when I got there. I was really hoping it was a Union Parker but a regular Eclipse 974-1/2 in great shape was fine with me!

Why were you hoping for a union Parker? In my experience they're not nearly as good as the older ones.

I use adhesive felt pads on a screw for a handle. A paint pen or a very small brush. A steady hand and don't get in a hurry .

I used a Testor's paint marker from Hobby Lobby. That may or may not be considered cheating...... this was my first vise and I've used these markers before to do raised letters so I went with what I knew.e3ef79adc58a1a0a4a0dbcaff8179c3c.jpg
