Having the coach out in front of the shop reinforces how well the scale of everything is spot on.

Darn Mike, you have wood. LOL. Counters look great. I was going to ask why they didn't put a backsplash on the end of the side bench but I see you had that covered. Also I had assumed stainless would be used but you used steel.
Great shop!!!

You're right Roman, the coach parked outside really puts the place in perspective as far as size.

As for the benches, they only had 10' lengths and the price jumped considerably for larger so I opted to go with two 10' ones and then weld them which did result in me having to add a 30" section of 6" tall backsplash but that was no big deal to do.

I was going to use stainless because that is what I had in my last shop but it was approx. 3x the cost and to be honest, I am getting tired of spending money. I really liked the hot-rolled tops that Steevo used on his and thought I would copy him and I am very happy with the way they turned out.

I also built these benches a couple inches taller than my last shop. These are 40" exactly to the top of the work surface. I am 6'2" and my son is 6'4" so these should work great.

Thank you very much. I highly recommend learning to weld, just remember it takes a lot of practice and dedication, it is not something you just pick up a gun one day and are a pro the next. Don't get discouraged.

love "Your" version of the Steve O Bench. How did you get the tops to match the painted frames?

Thanks JC. They look closer in the pictures than they actually are. The framework is a Rustoleum Hammered paint and the tops are just hot-rolled with the mill scale on them. I need to get some of that stuff that Steevo put on his to shine them up. His look absolutely amazing.

Work benches turned out excellent! Like the way the tool boxes are nested into the framework. Steve-O did inspire several GJ members to build some creative work stations.

In the deep southeast, unpainted steel will have surface rust on it by morning! Humidity creates many challenges.

We have some very good friends of ours from North Carolina that we met through RVing that were traveling through northern Utah and called my wife today to see if we were free for dinner. She told them not only are we free for dinner but talked them into staying at our compound.

Here is their 40' coach and Grand Cherokee backed into our back yard and plugged into our shop for the night. Their rig barely made a dent in the back yard and still allows full access to the shop. Completely different story from our last place that completely land locked our shop and back yard if we parked anything in the driveway.


I love our new place.

We are SO happy with our new home and the way it turned out. My wife even commented last night while sitting on the deck visiting with our friends how nice it is to have all of this room and have them stay with us for a night or two while traveling through the area.

I know I have said this before but I feel so blessed to have been able to make this move and have it turn out as nice as it has.

Brent, I picked it up at my local Grainger today. Actually the Ogden branch didn't have any but the SLC branch did so they transferred a quart up on the afternoon shuttle.

Mike, I too swear by Sheila Shine. My only problem was controlling the amount I splashed on the surface pouring right out of the can. A squeeze bottle makes it easier to use because it doesn't take a lot to coat a big surface.

That's a great idea Bob. You're right it does have a large opening on the can that takes some skill not to over-apply. A little goes a long way. I will have to locate me a squeeze bottle.

And thanks for posting up the raw metal treatment. I've been in and out of stevo's thread at various times and didn't catch that. I have some raw metal shelving I built a few years ago that I need to do that too.

+1 on the Sheila Shine. Nothing else comes close. I find it's smell pleasant and it is FDA approved so technically you could taste it. ( not recommended)

I did Mike. My 11yo son and I took a week's vacation together (just the 2 of us) so I didn't login to GJ at all. Left a week ago Wednesday and drove to Wright-Patterson to check out the Air Force Museum, then DiggerlandUSA on Friday. The weekend was spent in New Jersey with my cousins. Monday we toured Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater and drove home Tuesday. Wednesday was a recovery day after driving 1900 miles total. Then my PC crashed... still recovering my Win7 files off my virtual machine, but the Mac OSx side is back up and running.
