Oregon rock crusher, Gman, meat,rusty
Thank you all for the great input.

Based on all the great information, it looks like instead of trading I will try to buy one of the two Morgan 140s (a friend recently acquired two of them within a span of a day and both are greats shape-lucky dog)

Sorry to disappoint you but it seems my "self control" might no longer be "commended" :lol_hitti

The new baby has arrived! it is in very good shape, very tight tolerances and no play etc.

Now I have to work on getting one of the Morgan 140s (the friend is a mercenary and will try to charge me as much he can, so much for friends :) )

Outlaw and Bagged--- I was trying to figure out the ops question as it didn't really click in my head of what they were asking. I guess I answered wrong. The base to me still looks like a Parker but the bottom was cut out to put in a cheaper style locking mechanism rather than using the old drum brake style. Since it's a Union Parker (the later Parker version) maybe they cheaped out on the swivel brake and decided to modify what they had lying around? The feet on the base look like Parker.

Thanks! Who's the Doctor? Pipe jaws would be great but the only place I saw them online had them for $135

Nevermind. The doctor contacted me and he no longer makes custom stuff for vises. Sorry

Just picked up this Reed 4C from Craigslist $75

Excellent score shiftless! Can you tell me anything about the base? It looks like a stationary base on a 4C. First one I've ever seen that way. The handle will be easy to replace. I bet that vise cleans up super nice. I'm sorry I just have a b*ner for Reed C series vises.

meatsis and Bcom:

Obviously a shop made base with a big chunky weld holding it all together. I have no plans to bust this mofo off.

Seller told me that he left it out in the rain for 30 years.

Picked up these guys today for $20 a piece. Can't find much information on the clamp vise other than the very faint Luthen sticker.

Glad to see the Record appears to actually be made in England and not one of the Irwin imports.

Good find on the ad VA! Luther put their names in a real corny spot on their vises.

Actually, that is a great place Luther used to put the label. It is protected from damage by the recess, it isn't in an area that gets hammered, abraded, or sprayed (except for the jerks that spray bomb the whole vise at once) so the label should stay intact longer than any other easily visible area.

well this bug bit me, and i haven't even done a restore yet lol... picking this littlestown up this weekend... only paying 15 bucks but when i'm done with it it's going to go on my gun/bow bench so it'll be worth it. for some reason it really caught my eye. I also just missed a prentiss bulldog 524 for 80 bucks, not sure if that's a good price or not but to me seemed fair. i'll have to be quicker next time. starting to feel the vibe on these vises!

Yes the vise is very clean and it looks like it was very gently used.

In fact it must have been used for some light/soft work as it came with this rather odd looking piece that at least I have never seen before (but then again I am new to the vise world and this might not be unusual). I have seen "soft" brass/copper jaw inserts, plastic inserts, etc all of which directly attach to the steel inserts. But I had never seen leather inserts which also do not directly attach to the steel inserts.

Someone took a very thick rectangular piece of leather and cut a rectangular piece the width of the draw bar, in the center of it and used this as soft jaws (see photo). At least that is my assumption as on the side that leather piece faces the jaw inserts, there are deep impressions of jaw insert serrations and on the inner side of the leather there are various impressions of presumably the workpiece.

I am not sure if this is red neck ingenuity piece or a common practice in some trade. This for sure also saved the serrations on the steel jaw inserts.

Gman, several of the guys on here have made leather jaw covers for delicate work so as not to scar the piece being worked on.---However I have never seen a rigging like that in the past.---Regardless it will do the trick.---That must be double stacked leather or else it came off of a hippo's but.:D

I bought this for $12 at a local estate auction a while back. It is a 3 1/2" Wilton. Just mounted it to a steel workbench last weekend.

Ended up buying a Fuller 5. It is Japan made and looks like it hasn't been used much. Not up to par with some of the real nice ones here, but better then the newer Craftsman junk I currently have.

Picked up another Reed 104 this morning.

It was at a yard sale that was really an estate cleanout. There was a sign on the workbench, "bench not for sale", so I asked if the vise was a part of it. I was told that a nephew wanted the bench, but no-one mentioned the vise. After the guy did a poll of the other family members there, I was told that the vise was for sale.
"How much are you asking ? "
"How's $15 ?"
SOLD :rocker:

There was a full turn of slop in the handle. I reversed the collar and now it only has a 1/3 turn of slop in it. If that isn't good enough, I can add a shim later.

Otherwise, it's in good shape under the red paint. The teeth on the jaws (under the aluminum covers) are worn, but not wornout.

It has the 1912 and 1914 patent dates on it.

Your vise, your choice. If going for originality, I suspect it was originally painted. Most thing made of cast iron are painted all over, then machined, hence only the machined areas don't have paint on them.

Hi All
Does anyone know why Prentiss vises seem to have gap (please see photo below) between the jaws and jaw inserts (the gap is only right at the outer edge of jaws and is not all the way through which would be really a bad idea)?

The reason I am asking is that even after I removed the jaw insert screws, the inserts would not come off the jaws. I am not sure if the inserts are just stuck because of rust/paint or something else.

I did gently tap them on the side with a hammer to no avail. I did not use too much force as I was not sure if there is some kind of secondary latching mechanism that is holding them in place. The inserts appear to be U shaped. Are the gaps to be used to pry them off or slide them off side ways or something else?

Any advise will be greatly appreciated.

Prov--- The reason I thought the label spot was corny because 99% of the vises I pick up have grease or oil all over the slide just from people working on greasy parts and or just lubing the slide for a smoother action. The grease and oil would easily remove the label in that area. However that pic I found of the Luther must have hardly been used since the label is intact and no grease or oil is on the vise.

I'd polish it up a bit and leave bare metal.

Very interesting for me to see all the other parts, I have a No 23 here in the UK which makes it pretty rare but I'm missing some of the bolt through parts and a collar. If anyone has parts for one and are prepared toship to the Uk please let me know. I'd near kill for the toggle spanner :D
