Seems odd that a "Sears Best" would be a non- commercial 3/4 h.p. split phase motor with commercial dust chutes.
Now that you mention it...:headscrat Only seen those "best" stickers on 1 hp? But then again, I have 1hp blocks that those best stickers were not on and I don't think they were removed so who knows :eyecrazy:

I find it odd also that the primary sticker sits on top of the "Sears Best" sticker.

I still have not picked it up yet. The seller had a last minute work trip come up and is not back in town until Monday. Grrr! I don't want this grinder to vanish or get snapped up somehow before I get to it.

Bobioz, what are the commercial dust chutes and how are they different than standard? I also assumed the C-man 3/4hp block grinders were all "commercial" duty.
Anybody have any more insight on this grinder I am trying to buy?

commercial dust chutes aka "princess leia style" see the exhaust:

regular version w/NO exhaust:

dual voltage denotes commercial if you can verify that, its a heck of a deal either way you go about it, as long as you get it

Cajun and Torqueman answered your question Bill. That grinder at that price is still a good deal to me. Hope you get it and I hope it has a date stamp on it. Good luck.

Thanks ALL
I appreciate all the input and guidance. I can always count on GJ folks :)
I will post pics as soon I get this thing home (maybe Monday?). Hopefully the whole deal doesn't fall through... but I will remain optimistic.

I picked up this guy today for $50. A 397.19511...is this a pre-block? Runs real smooth, just a bit dirty. Everything is in good condition too, but I will still replace the bearings. The eyeshield on the right is not cracked, just a reflection.

You are welcome. Good luck. I've found keeping in touch with the seller has worked well for me.

Don't give up if a reply is slow in arriving. I almost gave up on a HD 3/4-HP Block w/stand. After an initial reply, the seller went silent for almost 2 weeks. I had given up, but then he replied. I met him in Port Byron on Lake Erie. He was a commercial boat operator and had been out of port the whole time!

Good find.

It looks like you have an early Block, pre-Blocks have a 115. prefix model number.

FYI - I added links to a good series of YouTube videos.

The author, Jeremy Fielding, gives a clear explanation of the induction motor, start-up winding, and centrifugal switch - found on some Block grinders.

Also, he has: Introduction To Motors Series

Anyone know if the Craftsman on the top of the blade sharpener changed over time? Just got one for the amazing price of 1.50, and it looks like the A is rounded, but no = or Crowntop on it. Is the kind that attaches via tool-rest hole.

Also at the same sale had a Pre-Block (Baldor style) 3/4HP in a base very similar to the Baldor next to it. Didn't get a chance to take a picture, as was too busy browsing. Went for $125 on half-price day, within first 2 min.

You did good, don't think they ever had one with a crown top logo? just as you bought but the newer ones have a black plastic three eared handle and not cast like yours, as long as the gear isn't stripped your golden. I am sure Dr Block will chime in shortly

I have one that clamps around the shaft. I took a quick glance and I didn't even see a Craftsman name on it at all... lol...

I don't think they sold these for too long of a stretch so I doubt there was any real specific branding.

I wonder who really made these and if they were sold under another brand name.

After finding the original wheels installed on all three grinders that I've bought I'm starting to think that one of the reasons that these grinders last for so long is that they are hardly ever used in a home garage environment. In my own case, I haven't used the grinder wheels very much at all but the wire brush sure comes in handy.

I agree.

A number of Blocks that I've seen with OEM stones are in very good condition, especially those that come out of a wood worker's shop.

I agree, 90% of the time unless they have added a wire wheel, the stones are original and usually in good to great shape. BUT I still trash all my stones!! Stones are too cheap from a safety standpoint, IMHO

Mine had an original wheel (or at least a CMan brand), but it was used quite a bit, worn down at least an inch or more. Lots of ground metal and stone residue that built up thick on the side of the grinder, had to use a chisel to scrape it off...

As yall know, I get and own a lot of blocks (maybe close to 30 ) and I am constantly amazed at how people ship them to me, some are very well protected but others just make me shake my head, this one came in today, sitting on my porch with the word UP sideways...:yikes: when I picked up the 40 pound box I got that queezy feeling because you could immediately tell there was lil to no packing inside the box and the contents were loose  so when I opened it this was what I saw...I removed NO packing from this package, it came as you see it, on its side too...
36154012292_fe01dd0c4c_b.jpg

The unit was bolted to that Masonite looking board, but the eye shields were loose in that cardboard just laying in front and that box in the back is the main packing :( but it looks like despite my female mail carriers best attempt, I cannot see any physical damage.:fingersx: I take partial blame because I did not request fedex ground, I never have any issues with them and AFAIK they would not except a poorly packed package like that, or be able to insure it if shipped that way.

Amazing!

Glad it turned out OK, in spite of that crappy packaging.

That's crazy... I've had a few packages like that over the years where they put a very heavy item loose in a box with little to no packing. At lease that was bolted to the masonite, that's probably what saved it.

Me personally, I will overpack something expecting the worst being dropped, kicked, smashed, etc... I've even double-boxed a few things just to be safe...

I had a compound bow wrapped (not boxed..) in cardboard shipped to me, and it came to me hanging out at both ends... I was shocked that it made it without damage...

Sometimes you just get lucky...

Here's a pic of a stand I think someone was asking about not too long ago. It belongs to a fellow GJ member that lives close by.

Just sheet metal, heavier than that light weight tubing style but not quite as HD as the cast style... You could probably easily stick a piece of plywood in there to have a little storage inside.

I was kicking around the Vintage Machinery website, and found a 1981 Craftsman Power and Hand Tools (Spring) catalog has been posted.

Page 114 shows the bench grinders available then.
CM%201981%20Catalogue%20Capture.jpg

A PDF of the full catalog is free to download, --> http://www.vintagemachinery.org/pubs/detail.aspx?id=17142

AFAIK - this is the 'newest' vintage Craftsman Tool Catalog available.

For more catalogs, follow the link and filter on General Line Catalogs, --> http://www.vintagemachinery.org/mfgindex/detail.aspx?id=222&tab=3

A question for those of you who have created and printed new data labels: What type of paper did you use and how did you apply the new label to the grinder?

Eye Shield Polishing

What are you guys using to polish the plastic eye guards? i have 3 grinders whose guards are all scratched up to the point that you can barely see through them. I don't want to restore the grinders only to have bad-looking eye shields on them.

Does anyone have a detailed process for getting those scratches out? I've been looking at Novus polish as a possible solution, buy I was wondering if anyone has any experience using it

Novus polish is what I use and works very good. It's not a miracle maker but gets the job done. I also use it on my welding hood and headlights.

I think I'm going to try Novus. It's designed for plastic, so it probably won't damage it any more. I don't expect them to be perfect, but I'd like to actually see through them! I'll post a write-up (with plenty of pictures) after I'm done. Keep it on this thread, or start a new one?

Feel free to post it here, or the CM Block Grinder plastic eye shield clean-up thread.

If you're doing a restore of a Block, a separate thread is cool too.

If you place Craftsman Block in the title, it will probably get more views and feedback.

Need some help guys.

(2) of my 1/3 hp block grinders were left outside recently and a rain storm got them wet enough to where once plugged in they trip the breaker. Are they toast? Can some one point me to a repair that someone has already posted in this thread? Thanks.
