Picked up this Athol 323-1/2 this AM, pretty nice shape other than the poor spray job. Of course it's missing 1 pipe jaw, anybody got a spare?

Just picked up this Colombian No 4 at a garage sale for $2.00. Couldn't turn down $2.00 for a US vise but I don't know much about it. Plan on doing some thread searching later this weekend but would appreciate any history, quality, feedback on this one. Are these good vises?

Fairly light duty homeowner grade exposed screw vise, but you can't go wrong for $2.00!

Picked up a couple vises.

Pic 1 & 2--Hollands no. 25 vise--4" jaws, 6" max opening, 45 pounds

Pic 3-7--No Mfg Name Found. Just number 134 as found in two places in last pic.

Anyone have a guess on mfg?

I finally got around to weighing the vice and it is 60 pounds 4 ounces. here is what the swivel looks like. I don't think I've ever seen one that is completely flat before.

Finally finished my Reed that I picked up at an old second hand store for $25 bucks. I had it sandblasted then I acid etch primed it. This is my first good vise and I plan on keeping it. Before this I had a Chinese vise that I restored once and it held up very good for what it was.

Well I FINALLY found me a Baby Bullet! This will be one Wilton that is NOT getting sold or traded!

Long story in the garage Sale thread, but - HS flea market: I'm standing next to it looking in a box deciding if I want to bend down and dig, and I see this:

When his wife got the guy to give a price Five Bucks."

"Sold!"

I paid right then, and THEN stooped to see of anything else was worth getting!

So it's my FIRST Baby Bullet! 2", in really good shape, not beat very hard! Should clean up well!

I need to go dig, but I MAY have the power arm for it? :headscrat

More pics as found: (the Nail is pretty ugly, but I'm not complaining!

You need more practice stop by and I will let you restore a few of mine for more experience!

Jaw teeth look good on that one, important since you can't easily replace those jaws. Nice job!

The are both missing the screw! :see: is the big boy an 8"?
Both screws are being cleaned. I had to put the 4" there for scale. Both of these Parkers are in unusually great condition. Each from different owners that used them correctly over the years. The wedge for the swivel lock on the 978 is made of the same material as the collar.

Any recommendations for a cheap vise? I rarely have a need for one and won't be pounding on it.

Would you recommend a Olympia, masterforce, or harbor freight?

Thanks

OK you earned a you **** award Outlaw. Nice find, the base will have to be taken off if you plan to mount it on a power arm.

Yesterday I made a pattern for soft jaws for the babys and first try at it seemed to be just about right. Happy to share the pattern on a 8-1/2 x 11 sheet to anyone where you can cut it out or a.dxf file for machining. I hand cut this set with a dremal and 1" ribbon sander. I did not have copper but used 5052 aluminum instead and it's bendable aluminum.

I wouldn't recommend any of those places. even if you are not hard on it they aren't that wel made.

How big do you need?

Look for one of the 50's to 60's Craftsman Homeowner vises, with the inverted "U" channel Formed slide. they made them 3-1/2" 5" and later 4" jaw. well made the smaller is a great "second pair of hands" the larger can do more... The are common and come up for sale often. Heck you could probably get one from someone here...

Back in the day I would have done craigslist until my one bad experience that I thought I was going to die.

So your thinking all them will crack huh?

Guys this pattern is a copy of the layout on the 8-1/2 x 11 sheet paper. This is a simple flat design that can be cut in many ways. e-bay would have the .040 copper and aluminum (5052) Just PM me your fax number and I'll send a copy your way.

Outlaw is correct in that it's a roll of the dice buying brand new, made in China vises. Some of them hold up fine, but the majority are total junk.

If you don't need a vise immediately, take the time to find one you really like.

There are other options besides buying directly from CL sellers. Search garage sale listings using key words like "tools" and "vise" or "vice" (the common misspelling), but don't let your bad experience keep you away from at least checking CL. There's also OfferUp and Facebook Marketplace, both of which offer better insight into who you're dealing with. No matter who or what you choose, you can do things to protect yourself like asking to meet in a public place or taking a friend with you.

I wish you the best of luck!

Since I'm not allowed to move anything as big as that missing screw from a Parker 978, I have to work on something smaller.

Craftsman 5180 (3.5") paint is done. I've had it baking in the sun the past couple of days and finished it none too soon - the rain is about to begin and it won't stop until next June. All that's left before assembly is to paint the lettering (which I **** at) and polish the nose and handle of the screw.

Brian

I just did the lettering on my American scale tonight.. I used a plastic body Q-tip (hollow stick) and pulled all the cotton off one end, sanded it down at a slight angle. Using it like a dauber to paint the letters. Since it was hollow and sanded like an old quill pen it holds paint and only puts it where you touch.

This is where the issue of size gets confusing. If you rarely have a need for a vise, and won't be subjecting it to hard use, you don't need a large vise. Quality 5" vises are pretty big...most about 100lbs give or take.

Cheap, imported vises at big box stores have large jaws in comparison to their overall size to make it seem like they're a larger, more substantial vise than they really are. A 5" vise from a big box store typically weighs around 30lbs. A Wilton 300S with 3" jaws weighs that much!

I guess that's a long way of saying that there are 5" vises, and then there are 5" vises :)

There's no way of telling if an imported vise is going to break on you, but I can't tell you how many calls/e-mails I get through my website from people who have broken imported vises and are looking to find parts, or have given up and want to find a decent U.S. vise without searching for one themselves.

There's a good chance someone here is reasonably close to you and has a decent, U.S. vise that isn't expensive. Maybe put an ad in the classified section?

Great find and crazy "you ****" price, good for you

I don't turn my nose to everything made in China but what Mr. GmanBart states, is very well said.

Any thoughts? We don't see many Wilton's up here, wondering if it is worth the price

If you want to flip it, there is not a lot of room for profit left at that price.

As a keeper, it is not a "you ****" price, but you would have an excellant vise for a decent price. Of course if you have a special place in your heart for Wilton's, then it is that much better.

Like you said, we don't see many Wilton's or any USA vises, in our backyard up here. Of course you could offer a bit less and maybe get it for $200....or if you have patience and he doesn't sell in the next weeks, maybe $175?

Good luck

Nice addition to the fleet - tossed in as part of a larger negotiation - Sears 5246-2 3" clamp-on Vise! PO stated it was in his toolbox and used by many co-workers over the years who needed something to hold small parts
