Hmmm, are you the guy they are referring to as "Rocket Man"?

I just won't comment on the quality of the workmanship. (ran out of superlatives)

Andy
You are too kind thanks for the visit .
I'm getting anxious to get the rocket done and mounted in the big garage

Don's no crazy loon but he does have a cool rocket.

Thanks Shorty
I'm sure it will be a bit of a conversation piece.

Now how many people can say they have a 18' rocket in their garage :rocker:

Bears fan
I mentioned to a guy thursday that I had painted my rocket, He thought I ment one of those 2 or 3' ones guys set off in the park. He did a double take when I showed him the picture of it in the booth.

I would venture to say, not too many.

Thanks for the visit Finallygotit

I will let you know what is said about it when I get it hung and a group of car guys drop in

I finally found some time to work on the rocket this week.
I managed to get it painted white (the first color) yesterday

Loading the rocket into the booth using my forklift and my engine hoist to handle the 18' rocket

Holding the rocket up high so I can paint the bottom of it

2017-09-28 16.46.11 by don long, on Flickr

using wire hooked to the ceiling helped balance the rocket and the lift was raised so I could stand on it to paint the top.

The wings still need to be painted

Is there a thread on the rocket? Or cruise missile? Is it home made or salvage?

This thread continues to deliver as always.

Glad you got time to work on important stuff like the rocket.

May have mentioned it elsewhere, I do miss the sun over here on Mud Island.

Sorry AZ

No special thread on the rocket. It is a mock up model built at Northrup I think.
A buddy of mine pulled it out of their scrap pile a few years ago and donated it to my party garage. The only stipulation was that I give it a trick paint and hang it up.

Does that wiki explain the role they played in Gulf War 1? Basically they were missile sponges and a diversion for the main strike package of non stealthy aircraft.

The Corvette is ready for the road. just waiting on registration.

A long time coming and an absolute beauty. Got to be one of the best Corvette resto-mods I've seen. I've owned 5 Corvettes so I have an idea about these things. Used to work in a Corvette only salvage yard back in the 60's so I still know every nut and bolt on the C1's and the first C2's.

It's your car and I love it, but I am partial to the coves being painted in a contrasting color.

I guess if I ever get another I can do that, huh? :D

I'm catching up on your thread and got to the wildfire part. I was ready to hop in the truck, pick Zeke up, and start rebuilding. Glad to see there was no real harm done.

Ok Don. I read somewhere you miss banging on metal. Well I also heard the Safety Inspector has a few dings and a dent that would benefit from your skills. Maybe I could arrange the two of you to swap vehicles for a week or two. Said safety inspector gets straight panels and you get a throughly tested and verified safety inspection for the Vette.

p.s. Insurance waiver. Yep I can wave at every insurance office I pass. Lol.

That would be $2.8 million each in today's $, it better look fast!
Looks like it had some tiny JATO units to get going too,

Slewfoot
I agree that's a lot of money. My wings do not have any attachment points for those (JATO) rocket boosters. I worked on the color scheme and stripes today.

Nothing was said about their war time experience

That's a very nice complement THANK YOU The 62 vette was the only C1 that didn't have the coves painted a different color.

Thanks for the thought Herb.
Don't let the fact that he fire missed me stop you from grabbing Zeke and coming over. We have plenty of construction planned and your help would be much appreciated.

You drive that car across country and I'll show you what little I know Then we can both do a safety check drive in the Vette.
BUT you must show proof of ins. coverage first lol

Man did I get caught up in the action.

I wanted a 40 foot container that was offered, but no luck
I won the 20 footer instead then the fun started (TOOLS)

Read a little farther, the Wikipedia article has a nice writeup on the drones used in the Gulf War for diversionary tactics.

Your missile is a very nice piece of history.

Auction looked like fun:willy_nil:willy_nil:willy_nil

Andy I hate to read because I don't comprehend that well but I'll go back to it one more time.

I think that knowing a little more about the Chuker It will be a fun conversation piece for the party garage.

I got several tools that I don't need cause I already have them in my box but the prices were crazy cheap

Yes Bob

It was fun and the best part was getting the container that I'm going to paint today so it doesn't look like an eyesore in the yard

Don: i agree every one of us should have an 18 foot rocket in our shops. GEESH that is amazing and your painting skills are just as amazing.

WELL DONE!!

you might have said, but how heavy is it and is it made out of aluminum or steel?

also can't believe that was your first auction, but sounds like you found a good buy or two so post them up as you get time.

still cooking stuff in the E tank too?

Pardon the french! But the rocket is just BADASS!!!

Thanks B.F.

I'm liking it too. can't wait for the wings to get done and mounted. It will look even better. Now I've got to decide where to break the blue rear fin lines and how many white stars to put on it.

The rocket (Drone) is only 13 feet long I was wrong when I said 18 I was only guessing. The drone is made of a very light metal but much harder than aluminum.

That was my first sit home and bid auction. I've been to a few in person auctions before. They are much more stressful.

The "E" tank is still cooking good stuff.
Here is a heavy pinch press that came out of the soup the other day
If you look hard you can see where the cook line is on the handle
(about 2 " up)

Hi Don.
I saw the rocket sign posted by shortykorte and was a little suprised. I drove past it every day for almost three years. It is in Auburn Washington along Auburn way north. The dealership is still there, but now sells used cars, and the service department area has been repurposed into smaller businesses. I could get the exact address for you if you want to contact them about the sign.

Ok Don, I figured it out. You got the missile to shoot at the Safety Inspector when he shows up.

That is an awesome Oldsmobile sign. I was in the Auburn area when in the military. Wish I had seen that sign.

Don catching up on the last few pages of your thread. I swear you and Andy add pages daily! :D

I love the rocket. The paint job brought it to life.

Glad to see the Vette is ready for a test drive.

Also glad you dodged the fire.

Questions for you about your Electrolysis tank. Are you using a battery charger? And what is your solution made out of?

That's Funny RR
I used to be in a business partnership in Washington and our headquarters was in Auburn. I'll bet that I've driven past it several times myself.
I think that sign is a bit large for my garage but thanks for the offer!!

Rocket paint = Win

Thanks Grizz

It's half done. Next is the wings and tail Blue with white stars.

That's the same color my little "bombs" are.

What little bombs Herb?

Really classy paint job!
But what did I expect?:D

Andy
Something in JD green???

I just got one of these 2-3 weeks ago pretty cool.. Mine is 47"x 34"

I think that's what mine is too .I liked the way the drawers opened with 100 lbs of brass in one. Enjoy yours, I'm putting mine in with the machine shop to hold my lathe and mill tooling and measuring instruments.

Love the colors. Now it needs lighting!

AZ see the little squares on the rocket? a little round ball goes there but I'm looking to convert them to led (red & green) lites

Your thread is hard to stay on top of too. Yes things are always changing around here.

My Electrolysis tank is charged with my battery charger (on 15 amps) and I fill the bucket with tap water and 1 tablespoon of Arm And Hammer washing soda

Rocket is looking great Don!

Thanks Coop
