I been waiting to get back to Dads place to get pics of a couple of old vises there. I'll be taking over the collection before Christmas and have a lot to photograph and document but here are some teaser pics.
A Reed 104 and an English (?) blacksmiths leg vice. How the Reed came to be in the Hunter Valley I do not know but the leg vise was "acquired" by my Dad on Mums instruction when they were dating in the '50s, It was sitting in a tumbled down shed on a farm near where she grew up and Mum encouraged Dad to make it his

Any info on the Reed would be appreciated.

I've included some shots of his shed to give an idea of the 50+ years of accumulation I have to sort through , luckily I have nephews who are interested in this stuff too. SO MUCH STUFF!!!

First Red Seal vise for me its a number 64 its like 80 pounds, for a 4.5 inch vise that is pretty dam heavy. Reminds me of a Morgan

Over at friend and former co-worker this evening - his Parker 79X came from local manufacturing company when they moved to new location decades ago.

I don't know that these are very rare or collectable. I bought it 5 years ago from some guy who sold it to me out of his trunk. Think it was at the Stamford Metro North station. He wanted 10 bucks and I was doing some plumbing at the time. Found an ad from '72 that has a similar looking one. Anyway it's a Rigid C-21 or c-353? Has two markings and it's a yoke vise.

I am unsure if the video is going to work. Video of my wilt o matic on just pneumatic because I don't have the hydraulic pump. Up to half an inch of travel for it. I can't lift mine to get it out to a stump. I was carrying a Reed 150ish pound 205 1/2 to the basement last night to start restoration and tipped over. Going all the way out to the back yard no way.

JP267: that pipe vise Is a Ridgid no. 21, all the other numbers are just part numbers. As far as I know they are still made the exact same way that they used to be, those aren't too rare but the chain vises are more popular

The crown jewel here of course is not the immaculately restored 544-B Rock Island Combination vise by Jedi Master Scott, it IS the 3.5 inch jaw, Japanese Craftsman, from here on out known as "The Legend."

Here we have a 108 Reed atop a vintage railroad vise stand, which again, the crown jewel is "The Legend."

Oh, and btw, I'm in pursuit of a stump to replace the vintage railroad stand.

Vises: Smokeshow didn't mean anything bad by mentioning the stump and probably wanted to hear how you move them. of course since you move old hammers and other steel things that weigh maybe 10 times as much and more i bet these barely even weighed your floor down. maybe you can use those vises as your SO CALLED STUMP while SANDMAN uses his big Reed 108 and some of his other monsters and anvils.

I also picked up this little green Reed 203 and i need another non broken dynamic jaw if anybody has one to sell or trade me for something they need just PM or email me.

They came from Germany yes!

That’s very kind of you to be praying for everyone affected by the hurricane! What a disaster that storm created! I took off a week, bought an entire semi truck load of bottled water and headed down to help out where I could. Very sad to see what happened down there!


I personally think “the legend” is a show stopper!!!

Hey sandman get yourself a #2 pencil! That will make a great stump for that legend vise!

Drives- you were quite right on my post about the stump! It was all in jest with no hate and all love! I think the huge vises posted before were very cool and I was just making a light hearted joke! Hopefully no one took offense[emoji108]

I've built up a small collection of little clamp-on vises. Sometimes they're very handy, but most of the time their use is limited. They other problem is that most of the time, they don't sell for a high enough price to put any time & materials into.

But I still like them and I've found a good use for them.

Here's my new vise lamp made from a Craftsman #5246 vise.....

Mark - That is an absolutely fabulous idea! I too have too many small clamp-on vises that need a purpose - will try your idea to put one back in regular service!

nice find and WELL DONE on the price.

there are other vises i've see on those power arms in case Outlaw isn't quite ready to sell you his.

Vises: a semi truck full of bottled water sounds like a VERY nice gesture and probably went to some deserving folks. hoping for the best for the USA right now cause between hurricanes, fires and floods we are having a horrible year.

ALL: I also picked up this Sawyer 26 and other than the bent wrench and a loose sleeve it might clean up pretty well and it's a BEAST.

anybody have a good method to straighten a swivel's wrench? i was thinking heat and maybe squeeze it in between some smooth heat treated jaws on my Reed 4c. or since the bend sort of looks ok should i just leave it alone? thoughts?

TJ: thanks for the pictures of the wilton C1 & C2 with your new Athol combo. in picture the C1 looks bigger than i thought it would next to the Athol and almost looks like you had 2 C2's. in any case i think your Athol could be a keeper.

ALL: speaking of combos i don't think i mentioned i picked up this American Scale combo. it's in pretty good shape for almost 60 years old. only a little slop in the screw that i might be able to snug up with the sleeve or a thrust bearing or bronze or brass washer and some new grease and it's good to go. i'm thinking of stripping and putting on some BLO cause i like my vises (vices) NAKED.

speaking of BLO do any of you have a good source for it maybe in 5 gallon cans or by the case cause i tend to use this stuff on a lot of my steel now?

Outlaw: nice find on the baby bullet and i might have even handed him a ten spot for it. WELL DONE!!

SPD: you are going to have to probably make one or find one on a broken REED which BTW is one of my favorite brands and the REED 1c might be one of my favorite combos. NICE FIND!!

TJ: thanks and it sat on Craigslist and Ebay for months with no love so i had to bring it home. it might also be a user instead of just sitting cause it's a good size and i think weighs about the same as your Athol. another weird thing is he's a neighbor that is a retired machinist and a PICKER so he and i will probably be swapping a few things in the future.

ALL: anybody missing from GJ or this thread cause of the hurricanes, fires or floodings? man the USA is at war with Mother Nature this year. GEESH and best of luck and prayers to those dealing with all this STUFF.

Thanks. I didn't think it was very rare I used to see them on CL fairly often. Oh well it still serves it purpose well.
