The "Not My Shop Cleanup"

Let me first explain who's shop it is. It is my girlfriend's father's shop, who is also my employer on his farm. I am the 'Resident Mechanic' and having a shop to work in is very useful for getting things done (duh!). So in an effort to get the shop useable the cleaning began.

As you can see it has a lot of stuff, both good and junk. Oh and lots of dirt. Most of the windows are busted and have been for quite some time and has endured many floods aswell.

So the Cleaning began on 12/14/2017-



John, the father's preferred method of tool storage is ammo boxes, a great concept for field fixes, not ideal for inside the shop (in my opinion). The engine in the picture is a 1955 Chevy 261 that will be rebuilt in the future to repower on of the many "Advance Design" Trucks on the farm.

There is also a 1949 6400 and a 1953 4100 that I do not have any pictures of currently.

Thanks! The 50' and the 53' I got running and driving. Used the blue one in the fall to pick pumpkins with. Thanks! Progress has been slow since it has gotten cold here in Missouri, I boarded up two of the gaping holes where windows once were and will try to get one of the wood stoves operational once again to be able to continue work.

Thanks for the support. It is a LOT of work, but very worth it for two reasons- 1)discover/rediscover lots of good materials to make stuff with and parts for just about everything. 2) Working on the dirt/mud/snow gets old really fast.

You are correct about the stuff being good stuff, and yes that is a huge metal lathe that is missing all the lathe parts except the bed and headstock. The idea of making it a base for a workbench has been tossed around. John, the father is very pleased with the progress so far and has rediscovered tons of stuff he did not know he even had!

That is the major flaw in that shop is no storage at all, other than the floor that is. luckily there is an endless supply of I-beams, pipes, and angle iron that have been reclaimed from demolition jobs to use for shelving and other means of organization, like a metal storage rack.

OldIron- I have been told that the headstock has been used for just that.

AAAAAHH...my vicarious hopes dashed again.

Well, it's got the makings of a good wood lathe someday. Shouldn't be too hard to fabricate a wooden tailstock and metal tool rest, once the shop is cleaned up and you can take stock of your stock that is.

That ford is a F-700. The rearmost axle is just a dummy axle and the drive axle is a two speed. It just has a single trans, but does have overdrive.

Love that Squarebody Dump truck. I learned how to drive stick in one. It had a 5 speed and 366 BBC. That Jeep is pretty badass. I think if you wanted to sell that you would have a buyer easy as popular as they have become.

That garage reminds me of my first consulting assignment when I worked for Digital Equipment in the 80’s. I was at a major state university who had a student run repair center for PC’s and the like.

All the items to be repaired or already repaired were just placed on the floor. They filled a large room. I suggested shelving and you would have thought I invented the wheel.

Looks like you are in the same boat. BTW the trucks are amazing.

Yesterday I began cleaning the other ⅓ of the shop with the Hough payloader. Lots of rusty fasteners on the ground and more dirt.

Both of the sliding doors to the shop had had the nails pull out of the tin leaving the doors very weak and flopping all about. Many thousand screws later and it is WAY better

Progress has halted when Torrential downpour began and I found out where the roof has been leaking...

What a great time your having, I know where your coming from because my Papaw was a dairy farmer and also had a "shop" !
He had all his tools and equipment parts in there just thrown all over the place. my cousin and I worked for weeks cleaning and straightening it all up one summer, He was very proud of what we had done !
Your project really brings back memories to me. will be following this thread.
