Gull wings can be found with all kinds of finishes, LS, including natural steel, black oxide, black japanned, cadmium, and plated. And yes, as far as I know, those style handles have never been seen in any other mfgr's catalog or with any other logo behind the pivot except a Vlchek V shield, a Vlchek Flying V, or a Vlchek contract marking (e.g., "PR 206", "H1106"), made for Chevy and others. Many are found with no marking whatsoever behind the pivot, ostensibly contract production for auto stores, but they are all identical and all - logo or not - have the same forged markings on one handle shoulder ("FORGED IN U.S.A.").

Okay, rescued them out of the "dollar" box. They just say Forged in USA.

Here are a bunch of examples. The upper left one has the Flying V logo.

Not sure if this belongs on this thread but stopped at local thrift store this morning. Been looking for good quality kitchen knives to practice/learn how to sharpen them. Found this 8" chief's knife. On the blade I could read the faint information F. **** Stainless steel Made in Germany. 144721. Did a little searching on the internet and found this to be a good quality professional knife. Paid $1. Also picked up a Hall's Hard Arkansas stone glued to a wooden block with a small bottle of oil inside the block. Paid $2 for it.

Popsjohn: Good finds both! The F. **** chef's knife is a good quality tool that should serve you well for a long time. They tend to balance very well in my hand. I actually like the feel of the wood handles as opposed to the newer plastic ones. A hard Arkansas stone is always a good find too.

gpw42, the Boker pliers are designed for the locking ring on Cannon plugs. The plugs had a knurled long ring with a coarse internal thread and was used on aircraft, electronics, and some heavy equipment from the 1930's into the 1960's. Good score!
I've got a pair of Utica 529's with soft rubber inserts- same aplication.f68939883ae358a0ac8ecf96c7d57080.jpg

Don, that's an amazing collection of Vlcheks! Is that the only flying V you have?

Steve

Yeah, Steve. I've pretty much quit buying them now but I check each pair I see for the logo. I didn't actually find the one with the Flying V that I have. Username took pity on me and sent me that pair from his REALLY large collection of pliers. Just let me know if you want a pair of the ones without the logo. They are extremely common around here, as are Cee Tee wartime pliers.

A big thank you to ryan20021982! Today I get home from work and I have two packages; one from Ryan!

He sent me the paperwork above that he had posted in the long C craftsman thread, as well as a pair of Long C electricians pliers! Also marked Vanadium and has Circle C forged into the inside tip of the handles.

Vanadium indicates Hinsdale or possibly Billings, but the notes on Circle C claim Crescent or Chanellock. - did EITHER of these tow ever do Vanadium steel? Need to do some research... (I think I did this a while back in this thread... maybe I need to do a search...)

The second Package was an Eprey buy. I seem to be on a knife kick again...

This one is made in faintly marked Solingen Germany, and "Field"

It's a bit of a project, but I liked the small blade and its curve, the pommel is cool, and the price was right. Handle leather needs tightened (I'l probably add a decorative ring or two...) and the blade needs work. There may be NO markings left once done...

I had to make another driver for the nut as well, shown is my older one for knives I needed a wider slot for this one...

Was on the rainy roads of PA last Sunday and had a forlorn hope of stopping along the route between Allentown and Lancaster. The deserted tables answered that hope with a frown, though there was some sort of auction going on a couple miles on. On the return trip, I spotted thousands of snow geese circling down for a rest in the fields, but by the time I had my camera out, the landscape had swallowed up the view of all but a few dozens.

JM- The wrench next to the bent Stilson is an International Harvester. Maybe you know by now.

3bay....I didn't know, in fact I cleaned up the logo to post here and ask....

This is what is on the wrench (to me I could see "reed"????) but since you mentioned International Harvester....I think I see a "I" over a "H"....

The guy(s) selling this stuff was from upstate NY.....they had 5 or 6 tables full of old farm items (3 tine pitch forks, rakes, shovels, etc) table full of wooden planes and rusted hand tools and such.....He had 2 more larger wrenches like the one I got but both had broken places on them.....oddly enough I got the 3 wrenches (bent stilson, the 2 larger ones) and the hammer handle for $4 ($1 each) but he wanted $3 for one broken one :dunno: Go figure......

If you can get the nut off the back of that Stilson, they usually hammer back straight pretty easy. I like the revolver cylinder looking nut on the one next to it.

Yeah, I've restored a bent one just like this one before ......the revolver cylinder one is the International Harvester one, and it took a bit of coaxing to get the nut off...(that didn't sound right )....

JM: thanks for posting up those old wrenches cause I thought your wrench's logo was maybe Reed too and not IH inside a C.

Outlaw: when you say you might have to tighten up the leather on the handle of that little knife do you just use the old leather and maybe make a couple new end rings? nice work making those old screwdrivers into another useful tool too. since we have a thread just about everything have you started a knife thread or maybe you should?

Went to an estate sale this morning (only one going on) that was a small auto repair shop on the same property as their home. Prices were about 80%-90% of what NEW would be, and all these tools were well used... :( There were a couple decent things under-priced but again were well used and I already had nicer so I ended up not buying anything.

On the way home we stopped by the ReStore shop, and I found this 8" Delta dado set for $10. :) I checked to make sure all the carbide teeth were there and it still seemed quite sharp. Had all the blades but it was missing the shims (this set only came with a few paper ones anyhow). Seems like any estate sale I go to that has a nice dado set I'm within a foot or less and someone else snatches them up before I can get them.

I'll give this set a whirl and see how it cuts, metal shim sets are not that expensive and at the very least this can hold me over until I find a nicer set. Mostly just plan to use for shelf dadoes.

Nice find on the dado set, I've been putting off buying a new set because I'm just convinced one is going to show up soon for cheap. But, as we all know, that usually happens after you drop $100 on new.

The ones I do find are usually in poor shape and not worth it.

The nut and pommel are bottoming out and leaving the leather rings loose. Usually that is because the leather has dried out and shrunk. in this case I think the plastic/rubber "color" rings did as the leather seems to be in great shape.

I'll try soaking the leather in some Neatsfoot oil and see if I get it to swell up at all. If not then new color rings are needed...

There have been any number of "show your Knife" threads. Not sure about knife making or mods. Need to do a search, but I've added these two to my camping thread as that is what they are for.

Quick stop at a couple of pawn shops and nothing to buy, sad.
Ran by Habitat and found this older craftsman sander, pn 315.11640 including an old 0lastic craftsman case pn 9-1452.
Owners manual included with some well used sandpaper, wtf?
$20 total.

Nice find! A couple years ago I found a nice Ram sander at my ReStore for around the same price. I think I looked it up and it was made in the 60's. Just had to fix the power cord. The insides were all bronze bushings and metal gears, all well greased, still looked brand new!

It's rewarding to find that one awesome thing for a steal.

Jason, very nice score. 'Bout to go pull this apart & see what's there. I need to get on a step ladder to get hezen some meat cutting poster copies, & my gut keeps lipping thru the hernia hole so I'm not sure how I'll do. Hope I don't drop anything, bending over isn't a speed move.

My wife and I went to an estate sale this morning in San Leandro, CA. We found quite a few Plomb and Proto items as well as some other worthwhile pieces. She also found a large bag of matching pieces of her late Mother's good silver which she did a great job of negotiating down to a reasonable price. The second picture is the Plomb, the third picture the Proto tools. The next picture is a WW2 Signal Corps pouch, followed by a '60s Barcalo DOE wrench. The short DBE wrenches are a pair marked Willard and the last DOE is marked Blackhawk-Armstrong.

Today was not bad, there are no sales in my area this weekend so I decided to stop by the local pawn shop. Hiding in the back of the display case was this 214SIMFMYA set marked $49 and to my surprise they rang it up as $40! I could not get out my money fast enough. The set is like new for the most part and all the sockets are dated 2016 so I would say I did good for $40.
