Thanks for the info. Researching Alloy Artifacts, it occur to me that two different companies made it. I'm always on the look out for the odd and obscure.

Both ratchets are nice and smooth, for their age. I figured it was better to buy them, rather than some high school kid who would leave them outside to rust, then they would be lost

Nice finds Don! is the 6 X 12 the same size both ends?

It's 5/16" X 3/8" and I imagine that it is pretty early Thorsen. I was also happy to find the Craftsman yardstick and cast iron file handle. Here are a couple more pictures of the Thorsen DBE.

I’m currently number 10 at a sale that starts in about an hour. Old house with a few sheds should yield some vintage tools.

Here is what I got last week- didn’t pick it up yet but I plan to tear it down and repaint.

a5d03bc3eb872296ee1f4b370ddde05b.jpg

Baldor 410B 1-1/2 HP dual voltage buffer with cast iron base.

I’m going to keep this as sell my 3/4HP Baldor buffer which cost me $50 more without he base a few years ago.

Paid asking price of $200. It was listed on eBay and also local Craigslist where I found it. It didn’t get any bids due to very poor description so I was able to get it.

Only trouble is that it’s in Brooklyn and it can only be picked up M-F 9-5. I live 30 miles away in central NJ (which translates to about an hour). I already paid for it with PayPal just have to figure out when I can get out there.

Don, I'm wondering if the 5/16 six pt. end was intended for bleeding early hydraulic brakes? Bleeders are somewhat notorious for rounding off without a six pt. wrench.

I got to sale before 8 and they opened at 9. Number 10 in line. Waited in the car until about 15 minutes before the start then headed up the driveway to wait in the cold.

There was an old house, a dilapidated pool house and two sheds. I milled about with about 20 others while waiting for the sale to start.

About 10 mins before the start I noticed someone opened the shed door and went inside to look. I walked over and asked them to wait for the sale to start. They didn’t even have a number yet. They apologized and went back into the line.

Soon after they started calling numbers. First batch of 4 went in. Then up to 9 a few minutes later. No one went into the shed.

Then someone in line asked about the shed and the seller said everyone could head over. So the 15 people in line all headed over to the shed at once. I was well positioned and got in first. It was a mess with stuff everywhere. Very crowded with people but I took my time and started filling up a bucket. 30 minutes later I had it full and by then only 1 or 2 other people were in the shed with me.

So after making my pile I check out. The seller looks at the Hilti DX350 and pulled out his phone to look on eBay. He asks $150. No thank you. If this is how the check out is going to proceed then I’m likely to leave empty handed.

The rest of the checkout goes more smoothly. He names a price that is not unreasonable and I accept, put it back away or counter with something I’m willing to pay. I end up keeping about 3/4 of the items. I carry all the rejects back and put them away. I think he appreciates that as most folks leave a mess for him.

While going back I notice a box of 38 shells and bring them over to get a price. He doesn’t want to sell them because there may be live ammo in there. I say I can pay $10 and he says he would do $25 but no lower. I pass. He picks up the box and the bottom falls out and they all spill over the driveway. I run off to the shed to get a bucket to put them in and clean them up. Guess he appreciates that because then his wife comes by and he told her he sold them to me for $10. My plan was to scrap them unless they have more value as shells.

So here is my $100 haul

Pretty cool stuff... I would think you could net a LOT better price on those 38 brass by selling on gunbroker or something rather than for scrap. Looks like a fair amount is nickel plated brass!

VERY Slow day, due to weather. Only one Estate sale, and only 6 vendors showed for the HS flea market...

I got to the Estate sale about 5 min before "opening" to find it opened thirty minutes early and was picked over.. give away prices too...

The only redeeming factor was what I saw from one guy that had most of the "good" garage stuff, mostly had stuff I would have passed on...

at the Flea, I only found the angle Flashlight for $5 the rest was $1 all from the Estate Sale...

The box of SOS looks full or close to it. Goof off is about 1/2 full, the socket is a Fleet, and the driver with the split wood was taped together. I'm getting the tape glue off and I think the two halves of the split can be glued back together. The inside (first one of these I've seen under the scales) has I.A.B. Co. forged in. NOS battery saver (I actually need this for the DD rig...), Brass hinges for stock, Small lamp chimney, A brass handle or knob for something, and a Milkshake blade for an Osterizer, (we have an Osterizer too)

attachment.php

In other news, I got off Eprey, a railroad signal reflector: I asked the dimensions before buying (and it was the best deal going at the time... Most want silly $$ and stupid shipping.), and decided it should be a good size for a 200/242 series single mantle lantern.

I was right: 10" overall 5" opening 1-1/2" depth:

I expected the coloring to be paint or porcelain enamel, but I was wrong: its some sort of reflective tape. as hot as the vents get, I need to remove that tape at least form the inside edge so it doesn't melt onto the vent...

I may remove entirely and polish with Mothers... How it fits my latest 242 from last Sunday (I still haven't cleaned it):

Man, I find it crazy you guys have signup sheets and take numbers and all that stuff. Every estate sale I've been to it's usually just an informal line but once the doors open it's basically a free-for-all. I *wish* they did numbers sometimes, there are a few flippers that will scoop up everything in sight as quickly as possible, then you see them spamming the stuff at basically retail prices for the next year on Craigslist... :wtf:

Anyhow....

Wasn't planning on going to any garage / estate sales since none really looked enticing and most were really far away. I was at Lowes and one of the sales was just 10min down the street so I figured why not. It was late morning so the rush should have already passed even though their prices are usually high.

Found a Golf Ball Monogram stamper for my neighbor. I laughed when I saw it and texted him a picture as a gag, but he was like, "OMG GET IT FOR ME!" Hehe... For $4 I guess if it doesn't work no big deal...

Made my way down to the workshop and most everything was HF or beat to hell... I found a couple 36" Bessy clamps for $10 each which is a little better than retail. One of them was missing a pad so I got him to knock a couple bucks off that one.

Stopped by Habitat ReStore on the way home. Found a short hose for $1, a Ryobi scabbard for the hedge trimmer for .50 cents (my neighbor has a trimmer that it will fit), and finally a piece of metal shelving for $2 that I plan to bend and use for holding some pliers and maybe files or chisels...

Here's a better picture of last nights haul.
No room in the garage, so they'll have to live outside for now.

image.jpg

They look like Safway braces would work. If I remember correctly, Safway uses what looks like your scaffolding has: a spring lock for the braces.
Might be easier to find, good luck.

Actually if you can find something a little stronger that electrical conduit, you might just make your own.

Mattblast-nice find on the Pierce Arrow! Getting there early paid off.
I love those guys who act clueless and sneak into the garage while everybody’s waiting in line. It’s fun seeing the reaction from everyone.

Mazak-looks like you did pretty good with all those Pexto.

Kind of a productive day at sales today. I wanted a hip roof PowrKraft box I saw in some estate sale pictures. We were able to get it and a couple more items. We then went to a sale I saw on Craigslist. It was crazy crowded and full of tools. The seller wanted so little money for the first bag I filled that I went back and filled another. Lots of Craftsman, Thorsen and PowrKraft. Here are some pictures. The first picture is the first sale. The next two pictures are Craftsman tools. The next is Thorsen. The next two are PowrKraft and the last shot is the miscellaneous tools.

It's probably usually not an act... they may not have been to an estate sale before, or had been to ones that were run differently, or in some cases just be genuinely oblivious. :) I know at least one of the companies in my area lets people start looking through the garage an hour before the house opens, while people are still waiting to get into the rest of the house with numbers given out.

Thanks. The Thorsen and PowrKraft will be good additions to those collections and the Craftsman tools will help to pay for the tools I actually collect. In honor of the NBLB (no Barcalo left behind) club, I managed to find a Barcaloy combo.

No estate sales in the area today, so I hit the ReStore to the south of me.

Picked up this little parts bin full of screws and miscellaneous hardware and the wrenches for a total of $8.

(Vlcheck, Thorsen, Barcalo-Buffalo, Bonaloy)

The Barcalo was in a style that I haven’t seen before, so I guess I’m in the no barcalo left behind club now too.

Here is my number from todays misadventure....
IMG_9252.jpg

I had to go out towards Boston for work today, but I thought I would have enough time to sneak in an estate sale before sitting in meetings for the rest of the day. I found a sale enroute and swung by about 15 minutes before the scheduled opening. I was number 61.:eyecrazy:

I've taken numbers before, but this was a little over the top. They let in 25 or 30, then it was one out one in.... I hung out for a while but eventually gave up. They had given out over 90 numbers when I walked off....

Still fairly quiet for garage and estate sales in Spokane. My neighbor found a sale on th other side of town and picked up an Associated Model 6010 70 amp battery charger that he sold to me for $5. Millers Falls spiral screwdriver and hand drill for $4 each and a Union level for $4 from a local antique store. Also picked up a Handy Andy tin tool box for my Marx pocket tool collection, Tootsietoy HO delivery van, Arco rubber truck, Midgetoy jeep, and a really nice Wyandotte truck.f4f80eb363e300cffdf0d34ad6b3feed.jpgb023d64051774701be7c7d82a58c685d.jpg3b009bb78b9e3112cc56a628ed01d067.jpg6048a0b439ef336dc33b3e134437fb86.jpg62ccbc159e638d54b51155b620a82586.jpg

Probably right Lugz.

Don and Folwer, I think I traded all that style away to a GJ member (currently inactive) a few years ago. Not sure I have any left.

JV, cool finds! I picked up a Yankee No. 30A last week that had NO plating on the brass. Thinking it was early/prewar (before Dec 7th...)

BTW Lugz, I've been putting LED bulbs and 3AA to D- cell adapters in these to "update" them, and using Lithium AA's. Bright as heck, and I've never seen the lithium batteries leak and for the power use you get from them, it's NOT more expensive to use the lithium's I've found...

Bulbs are Dorcy 30 Lumen bulbs for the 3V/2 cell flashlights. 40's are for the 3 or 4 cell (4.5 - 6V) lights. (ask me how I found out... Looking for my 3 cell Mag light now...)

And I still haven't found the 3 cell Mag, but I did find my other angle light from a couple years ago, and it's also an MX Vietman era light like this one.

Yes, they are virtually leak-proof. :) AA primary lithium batteries are about as safe as the much-more-common primary lithium button batteries (which I've never seen one of those leak, even 20+ years old). I recommended them in this thread: Cleaning tools that batteries corroded in.

Finally got around to yesterdays haul. I hit a bunch of antique shops, restore, and second hand stores, Garage sales ect.... I found a couple of cool things! The P&C pebble 4way is prob my favorite! ended up at a ladies Garage sale with a ton of old tools but looked like they had been underwater or in a fire... they cleaned up pretty well though... Also found a couple of bread pans I love to get, for working on things I like to out all the parts in one. so I don't lose small parts.
