XJ: yep it's a lite duty open screw Milwaukee brand vise from maybe the late 60's or early 70's. i'm not exactly sure about the date. i've seen that style on many a handy guy's bench, but it's basicly a holder for small items and not very valuable.

Much appreciated Drives. I have a buddy who could use a little bench vise. Nothing fancy, this one is forsale for $10 currently. Just didn't know what it was.

I would love to have one of these. I didn’t know any actually existed.

https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https://www.ebay.com/ulk/itm/323116827141

Bagged I believe Vises bought one last year. You might want to check his post:

https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=44782&highlight=sothebys+vise&page=2838

And here is another very nice one that was listed by Sothebys for an estimated $4000-6000 but it seems it did not sell or something. I have also attached the original catalog page

http://www.sothebys.com/en/auctions/ecatalogue/2016/wyeth-art-timeless-design-n09507/lot.494.html

PS
The one listed on eBay has had some major repairs and weld job done to it

PS PS
Based on the vise in the drawing, if I was a betting man, I would venture and say that the original vise that came with the stand was a Prentiss but that is just my guess.

ALL: it would be fun if we NEVER TALKED ABOUT PRICING on this thread, but I really doubt that would happen. to some members $100 is a filter on their race car and to others it's a great night out on the town. and others it might be part of their latest Dr. bill they can't afford to pay. I'm very happy if you found a good deal or a great old vise and whether you are adding it to a collection that makes you happier or if it's your only bench vise that you needed for your garage/shop it doesn't matter what you paid for it if you like it.

:+1: Amen to that

Thanks for posting that interesting New Britain vise base. Too bad someone mounted the vise on the overhang instead of where NB shows in their advertising. The table got broken because the overhang wasn't strong enough for the force applied to the vise, resulting in the brazed repair. If they had mounted the vise where it was supposed to go, it probably wouldn't have damaged the base.

I'll bet Royce could fab up a similar base from steel! I'd love to see one.

Yes I saw the repair and I agree it looks to be a prentiss in the original ad. What’s crazy is I live one town over from New Britain, Connecticut and have yet to see one locally. Maybe one will pop up one day.

XJ: I'd bet we've identified thousands of vises on this thread so post up as many good pictures and information as you can (size of jaws, weight, age...) and we'll give it a try.

Bagged: nice looking shelf and better looking collection. i've heard that having steel on wood could maybe prevent it from rusting if that is even an issue since you've restored a good portion of yours. that said the cardboard might collect any moisture and cause the bases to rust a bit where wood might not and just thought i'd mention it.

Thanks Drives. Good tip about cardboard. I just put it down until I get some 1/8” hardboard panel so i wouldn’t destroy the shelf with rust and grease. I prefer to put hardboard down on all my workbenches too.

Hoping I'm in the right section to post help to ID this little Made in USA vise I picked up yesterday at a flea market. Believe the colour to be original could use a little maintenance but functions fine. Any clues would be appreciated. Doesn't seem to be a Makers mark on it only seemingly part markings V10, V11, V12 etc. Again appreciate any assistance you might render.

With tuition today I think all of those would need to be Bugattis ;). But seriously, nice work on the shelves.

Thanks.
I was just talking tuition costs earlier today. It’s insane but that’s a whole separate topic .

Drive, this is the contraption I use to hoist my vises in order to weigh them.---I don't have the room for an overhead or gantry crane, and I ain't as stout as Big Joe, or you either Drive, so I had to do the old Marines thing.---Improvise adapt and overcome.---This is what I came up with, and right now I'm having to use it for clean up after 50 mph winds came through.

This thing can hoist my 300 lb. Hollands #28 and never even strain even a little.---It's not too pretty but it's pretty versatile.

72.9 acres Gman.---All but 3 1/2 are in woodland.---But some mighty good hunting land.

Trijeff, still paying for 2 boys college.---But one of these days I'm going to do a terrible thing according to this old world.---I'm going to break bad and spend some money on me.---I'm probably just dreaming.---There are 2 kinds of people in this world, those that do all the spending and those that do all the paying.---I believe the latter is my calling.---But I hope to build that museum someday and you are all invited.

Well I just couldn't stand it, I took a short ride on that Double Swivel Pittsburgh.---But that train is moving so fast I was scared to stay on to long.---And it must have gone over a mountain or a mile high trestle, cause I got dizzy and then went into vertigo.---When it hit $1700.00, whooowee, I got out quick, but man what a rush.

PS
VA how many acres do you have?

Oh no, you're not starting a Husqvarna v Stihl war are you? All kidding aside, that is a beautiful area. I have several friends that live there.

Those are similar for sure. Are we really sure both my vise and his vise are Milwaukee? Im looking at the base and stampings, maybe different models of Milwaukee?

Probably.
What's the alternative?
A foundry jobbing for the trade?
Ship the casts different V#s different companies?

A collective consensus with a senior members memory of a lot of the posts here.
I can live with that, if something else shows up...

Such a shame! You could've gotten it for $10 if I didn't post the link here

Cute little statement written from your mothers basement. Did she bring you breakfast in bed this morning buddy boy?

VA: great looking place you've got there and sorry to hear the weather caused you more work. i'm hoping they do something about your creek or river flooding in the future cause with developing that is almost inevitable in most areas all the impervious surface (cement, asphalt, roofs...) water seems to get to those low areas a lot faster.

thanks for posting your simple yet effective method of lifting your vises off your truck to join the CHAIN GANG.

XJ: did you buy that little Milwaukee vise? we had a lot of discussion about those maybe 3 years ago and maybe that's the thread Rick posted a link to. that style vise might have been made by 20 different companies and not sure who was first, but the most common one seems to be a Littlestown brand.

Joyce: welcome to the group and our forum. if you read yesterday's posts you'll see that XJ posted another model of your Milwaukee brand vise. the V is all we really had to go by and the model #'s must have something to do with the jaw size, shape or maybe the time frame they were built.

Joe: even though I haven't bought a vise off Ebay yet that's pretty impressive you've been able to keep from doing so with as many as you sell there. we haven't seen too many shiny things coming from your shop lately so did you start shining or making some other tools or stuff? OR AM I STILL DEAD TO YOU??

XJ: if you look at the last picture of the vise Joyce posted a few posts ago you can see MADE IN USA on it's side. i'm not 100% sure that the vise you posted is made in the USA, but I'd bet it is and even though it's an open screw vise it's a good little worker. it would also be a great vise to put on a kid's first workbench so I'd grab it even if it was going to be a gift.

VA Well my friend it seems many of us here have even more in common than love of vises, tools, cars etc. Putting the needs and even wants of others around you before yourself is a sign of man of fine character

BTW, That is indeed a very beautiful stretch of land you have

Thanks for the invitation va
Can we all come on the same day? :)

(Once in a while I travel to Alexandria VA...is that close?)

312 miles, Shift.---5 hours away from me.

Frisco to Alexandria, that's a pretty good haul for you.---I'm going to remember that the next time shipping deters me from buying a 300 lb. monster clamper from the Bay area.:bounce:

And yes, everybody, the same day, we'll stack'em 3 deep.:D

As Peterman told George Costanza ("it's obvious you're lying"), cause if I could have had it for $10.00, Mr. Trijeff could have it for $10.00.---But you wouldn't do that, NO, NO SIR, you'd pass the savings on to me.:D

I carried my Reed 406 for 370 miles to Los Angeles for a trade with loydski29 and brought back a sweet Craftsman 5197. Not 300 pounds by any means but the Reed was a good half of that.
I think Drives generally travels further than I do for his scores. For the most part, I like to keep my searches within an hour drive.

I saw that a couple of days ago. He really upped his price since then. Originally it said "I want it out of my garage - make an offer". Algonac is not that far from me. We go there for fireworks and the Pickerel Tournament on the 4th of July. I thought about helping him out but what would I do with a 6" Paramo anyway?:dunno:

I’m sure you’re joking CRS...
Paramos are great vises and that one would fill the weather raking needs of 99% of GJ guys. Dyed in the wool made in USA folk would object to the made in England part but still...

Why you can make a tidy profit by re-selling it for $87654321 to our English friends Fret or Dutchgray (I understand they can not find one with swivel base over there) :D

PS
I would offer him $50-$100 and take it off his hands but it is too far for me to drive
