Can I squeeze in a small jewler's vise here?? It appears to be nickel plated and in decent shape(some corrosion on the top surfaces) , but I've never seen one with a "spring" on it like the old post vises. It has a vertical diamond shaped logo stamped/cast into it with the capitol letter H inside. One fellow said "Herbrand" for the maker, but I could find no sign of Herbrand vises on the internet. Any help in ID-ing this beauty would be appreciated. The point on the anvil is pretty danged sharp too.

I sure hope you've got the rest of this beast. Can't wait to see pics of the whole enchilada. What are your plans for it?

Got the whole thing, but had to take it apart to get it in the car. No plans yet as of this point.

I was surprised how smoothly it's working.

Parker 973

Couple recent finds. First is a Colton patent vise, my largest one yet, 3" jaws, opens to 3-3/4". Anybody have a pic of the mounting hardware by chance? Did Colton's come bigger than this? Threw $10. for this one.

Next is a little clamp on swivel jaw, swivel base, jaws are 1-13/16" wide, kinda cute.

What brand?

So I just spent 2 hours searching, and then browsing this thread, to no avail. So, I'll ask you folks. Have we ever seen ANY vises made by ANY of the gentlemen I've done research on in the Vise History Thread? This is of course besides the Wetherel vise for sale I posted with his story.

Sent from my VS990 using Tapatalk

TW I don't think I've seen that thread; Link?

A couple weeks ago I had a young GJ member come over for a afternoon of fun working on his vise. I cannot remember what vise it was but it had no jaw, some damage where it needed refreshing. BMR24 defiantly has some mechanical skills since he figured this stuff out quickly. All I had to do is show him once and a quick lesson in decimals. He accurately fit a set of A-Scale jaws to his vise by cutting the C-Boss to close tolerances. He also built a new handle and peened his own knobs on. I showed him how to build ball ends on my wood lathe. I gave him a old Sears wood lathe and will help him fit a 3-jaw chuck to it. I really had a ball showing him my methods of machining and I know he enjoyed himself.

Outlaw, are you asking about the little clamp on? If so, it's a Prentiss I modified with a Stanley base. All was revealed in my post on page 3199. Here's a pic of me playing around with the little mill I picked up at an estate sale, used it mill the Stanley base to fit the Prentiss vise.

While traveling I happened to stop by the monthly outdoor flea market in Rutledge MO. (Pop. 109)
I found this little jewel in the rough, a Holland model B. Jaw width approx. 2 1/2 inches

So-I’m thinking of doing this.. give me all your reasons why not to.. I am not sure I like the footprint of the base when compared to the capabilities of the old C1.. my thought would be to put a large wooded “cushion” mount under the vise between it and the grinder stand top.. (it’s all just resting on top of the stand as it’s pictured..)

Shift as soon as you cross State line into Colorado all vises are to be left alone. Look forward to seeing you. You should stop by Demoman's place in Kansas, worth the visit. By the way those are all 8" vises on the long trailer and several 8 inchers on the round table too.

Hemi, I had a MUCH smaller vise on a stand with a slam footprint stand; that stand had a sold base about 4" thick of steel It was marginally stable. No way would I put a big heavy workhorse vise on a stand with that small of base. Its way too top heavy!

It would be bad enough for the C1 to land on concrete. it would be worse to have it land on someone...

Make the base larger? Doable,

The next question is at what height does the vise stand? You want the jaws about elbow height. Where will it land on you?

Hemifalcon:
I think I am not alone in warning you about the instability of that set up as pictured. Do you plan to bolt the stand to a concrete floor? Most guys have a much larger and heavier stand to use for a large or even medium sized vise.
I have that exact Craftsman stand for my block grinder and it is barely stout enough for that task when not fastened down.

Hemi: i'd bolt that stand to a 200 pound piece of plate steel or just use that stand for a Craftsman block grinder that it is ok to use on without it being bolted down.

Get: looks like you've been busy!! WELL DONE as per usual.

Shift: I truly wish I wasn't flying home on our recent trip to Missouri cause instead of a 6 day drive and plenty of time in hotels i would have enjoyed scouring the sales and Craigslist across the USA. nice find and just know that gas is going up so BEE CAREFUL not to load up the car too much or you might not get home unless you rob a bank along the way. looks like a keeper for the shelf!!

ALL: I picked up a few small ones lately, but not much in way of BIG GAME around here and plenty of new and old BIG GAME HUNTERS in my area to compete with too.

hope you all have a grand weekend and a great MOTHER'S DAY!!

Thanks for the warning Drives!
Just to put your mind at ease, our Volvo wagon has a rated capacity of a bit over 1000 pounds passengers and cargo. Gas is way cheaper out here than at home.

Shift: yep, gas was about $.50 cents a gallon cheaper, but those hills climbing with a full load might leave you stranded in DELIVERENCE COUNTRY. Just saying!! of course it sounds like the car you chose to buy and drive might last another 300,000 miles so load them up and call me if you get stranded.

MNW: if you could wire wheel off the old paint so we could see the lettering we might be able to tell you more about your monster you found. otherwise when the guys click on your Imgur link they might just start staring at the nice looking ladies and never want to mention your vise.

did you carry it home in one piece?

Nice find and WELL DONE!!

Ok Vice experts what do you know about my 172lb find?

MNW
Great Score, congrats

Now like Drives said if you could clean the vise a bit it should help. Now I am no vise expert but the "fin" in front as well as the nose reminds me of Prentiss but the 4 ears are more like Reed :headscrat

Ps
Another puzzling fact (well at least for me) is that as heavy as 172 lb is , for an 8” it is a bit on the light side!

CL find, C Parker No. 5 128lb 6" jaws. Appears to be solid, will degrease and media blast with walnut shells to remove the silver paint and see what it looks like.

Ok guys I will clean it up and let you know what the numbers say...Right now it seems like it may read F_1833 G (C?) St P & O and on the other side is the number F_183 and maybe the same text from the other side but under 2 coats of paint!

No, I foolishly carried it in one piece...ouch!

Sorry for the delayed response. I normally do rhe following.
Degrease gunk engine cleaner, or purple cleaner
E Tank to remove old paint & rust. Hand wire brush and pick off old dried grease and paint left in tight areas.
Media Blast with aluminum oxide, it is very easy and quick after E Tank process.
Belt Sander or File clean up top of slide used as anvil. Do the best you can without taking to much metal off.
Wire Wheel all surfaces to be left unpainted. Abrasive pad to finish.
Filler J B weld in deep dings, cuts and casting voids. I use a razor blade to trim off excess. I use it sparsely and not a big area you have to sand off. It will leave a noticeable smooth surface. Use primer over the repaired areas or it will show through the paint.
Jaws I use 80 grit on a belt sander to clean up nicks in the jaws. I do just enough to make them presentable.
Painting tape up (original blue 3M ) machined and no paint surfaces. Take your time, paint job will look much better. Wipe with paint prep or lacquer thinner. Prime and paint or use primer & paint in one
Use your choice of rust protection on slide, spindle, and all other unpainted surfaces.
I use PB blaster lube on the inside of slide and housing.
Hope this helps.

This reminded me about a video I saw the other day. Anyone who likes seeing old vises captured on film in the old days might enjoy this film starring a Parker 954. May have been posted somewhere on here before but I don't remember seeing it.

Yes this is a Railroad vise. Chicago, Saint Paul, Minneapolis and Omaha RR. I got one about 3 years ago and it came from a RR shop in St. Paul. I saw another at the LeSueur MN swap meet a couple years ago but it was too high. For some reason it says 7" jaws on the side but has 8 inch jaws and opens 10". This was obviously made for only their shops.
I will try to post up some big vise I got last month

Gerard: Thanks for posting that link. I enjoyed watching the video. In some of those scenes the filer was using one of those Deco style Parkers. I've been looking for one of those for a long time.
