I ordered another ratchet from China. When it arrives in a few weeks I will have 2 ratchets, this new one is a fine tooth 36t with extendable handle or as the description says 'long move handle for strong turn'. We'll see how it goes... $4.99 delivered.

I've got 2 or 3 less than the last time this thread surfaced. I sorted out and traded/sold off a few duplicates. Still sitting a few above 30; that's pretty much the range where I stay.

Dunno if you got them already, but those superratchets and tuffones have got me checking ebay for functional blems

That tll72 snap on makes for about $99-119 depending on truck guy seems to sell like hotcakes

Right now my count is at 42 primarily from Matco (10), Craftsman (15), and even some Pittsburgh Pro (9) from HF. I have some from Snap-On, Easco, and Cruz Tools in a bike kit among others.


I really think a nice round number like 50 is needed though.

Ok, these are the main work ratchets in my shop. I have 2 boxes setup, on in the main bay and one in the fab area.

I probably have a dozen ratchets in my home box, and 4 or 5 in my portable box not pictured. Theres also a few ratchets in blowmold socket sets that I forgot about in the shop boxes.

Most of these are Snap-on Dual 80's. A few are the older tooth style. A couple SK, and a few Mac and Sunex.

I use the FL80 the most, I think I have 3 or 4 of those. One for each box. A few were my grandpas, I have most of his at home. He had mostly Snap on from the 40s and 50s. The rest were bought as needed, or when they were on special.

The real long flex head 1/2" drive SO I got when I needed to tighten some large flange bolts in a real tight spot. I don't use it much, but that leverage sure is handy.

So, of the 25 pictured, I probably use 5 or 6 regularly. The rest are handy in certain situations or are duplicates for multiple size sockets at once. All told I probably own 40 ratchets. I don't really collect ratchets, they just end up with me.

That's hard to say. I haven't had any problems using a thin layer of super lube in my 120xp ratchets. They don't like thicker oil like Lucas engine assembly. I haven't tried thinner oil like 3 in 1 since it's not really a sealed ratchet. On my SK, I like a little Lucas. On my RHFT Craftsman 3 in 1 works the best. I like to clean my ratchets often to see how it responds to the different lubes. Most of my ratchets are ok with super lube.

sk lp90 seems to be doing fine with thin layers of super lube grease

matco/armstrong 88s... i won't use anything heavier than air tool oil... used gear oil once in my matco and it worked ok in the summer but once the weather cooled down it started hanging up pretty bad... i'd hate to think how it would do with grease

Found a CB45 1/2 last weekend so whatever number I can't remember +1 for count now
Head is same size as the 3/8 besides being a little thicker, smallest head 1/2 I have now, plus handle is nice and big.

$20 on amazon for a Proto J5252F is tempting, how do they feel compared SK roundheads?
I don't have any ratchets designed by the french and made by Italians so I could justify it as being different enough

I use mineral 2 stroke oil with a little grease mixed/dissolved into it for my rats. Is that bad?... I've seen OEM YouTube vids pack lithium grease in the gear before but that's no good IMO.

I use superlube grease or superlube oil, depending on the ratchet.

For RHFT ratchets I use a combo of both. After a thorough cleaning in mineral spirits and blown clean & dry with compressed air I dunk the entire mechanism into a cap of oil and work the quick release button & flip the directional lever back and forth with it submerged. Then I smear a little superlube grease around the ribs of the handle before sliding the mechanism in.

Rough count I'm going to go with, around 50 or so ratchets I have pictured here. FWIW I also have 10-ish more Craftsman & Gearwrench ratchets not pictured in the worktruck & roadside toolkits in the wife & son's cars, none of which are at home atm.
