Well ****. It shows for me, I don't get it

MF I think like Fret said (and based on what I see when I reply to your post with supposed photo link ) it seems you are trying to post a link to a photo album. Instead of trying to trouble shoot this issue, you might want to simply upload the photo(s) as attachments (use the paper clip icon and then browse to the location of your photo and upload them)

Posting pics 101:

Start from the "Go Advanced" posting menus, or the "Post Reply" button near the bottom of any page, (Or hit the "paperclip" button to get to the upload popup); and at step 5 copy it into the URL field after hitting the "postcard" button: (Step 4/5 is optional; you will still have thumbnails)

I almost snagged a Meadville vise once. IIRC, my research then found that Meadville Vise Co. was around from 1890 to 1910 when it was acquired by Yost.

Sweet looking vise by the way!

Congrats on successful photo attachment. I see your older fixed base parker. What is the model number, like 103 (3.5”) or 104 (4”) or 105 (4.5”)?

In any case congrats on the vise too. You now have officially contracted the vise bug and would be checking CL and other ad venues everyday and perhaps several times a day :bounce:

Here is a lesson to be learned for anybody contemplating a new, low priced vise.

I found this ad searching for “vise” on my local OFFER-UP. Asking $8 for parts or repair.

outlaw called it.
Sorry if it wasn’t obvious. See how the entire jaw tower broke off of the static jaw support? I bet the user wasn’t doing anything TOO crazy when it snapped off. Nobody wants to be nearby when brittle cast iron is shattering.
See how thin and hollow that casting is? Very weak design.

Cretedog, I like the Meadville.---That's an old duck and an odd duck.---If it didn't have a covering, that's the heaviest built open screw I've ever seen.

Thanks Getr and VA-

I was wondering if the open screw was original when I got it also. Looked up the patent- didn't find anything definitive. The surface finish and degree of pitting at the top inside corners of the slide bars lead one to believe that there was never anything between or over them. The bars also look to be original- as cast into the dynamic jaw. If it ever became a user, there would be just enough room to get a piece of 1/8" flat between the bars and still clear the screw. Have a couple of the big Vandermanns with open screws too. I believe that design originated not much later than this vise.

About all a little cheap Chinese version like that is good for is holding a lawnmower blade or a bush axe for filing or grinding.---Don't ask one to hold this 5/8'' rebar while I bend it.:headshake

It has a turned down 1/4" lip that fits in a notch in the casting. The top of the plate is held in place by the pipe jaw.

That is just surface rust over a very low mileage R.I. Good find at a great price!
Is that Birtman Electric tag salvageable?

Nice one Outlaw.---You know I've never seen one on eBay, but I'll bet a Birtman Electric Emblem would bring around $50.00, like those Parker wrenches do.---But who is going to donor one of those out?:dunno:

Well thanks to all of you I picked up the mighty Hollands 46! Outlaw you have the sharpest eye ever! That was the swivel pin broken off on the back in the sellers photos. The seller was a great older gentleman and retired blacksmith. Apparently I missed out on a 550+lb Peter Wright anvil!

The Hollands looks great no cracks and only minor dings and a few chips. I got to thinking on my way home. I am extremely happy with this vise, I know some of you are serious collectors. I only wanted a very big vise. Some members on here have mentioned that this is a pretty rare vise. Before I tear into this vise and try to get that pin out of the static jaw, is there anyone local that might want to trade for something similar but more common? I really love the Reed 4c with the pipe jaws!

Am I way off? I have that pin soaking in penetrating oil and the slide pulled but nothing else for now. Please let me know what you think or if you want to trade.

Also I did put it on the scale 175lbs!!!! Plus still some factory paint left in a few spots. Almost a metallic ford blue.

Really liking the Hollands. I got a 13 1/2 a few weeks ago and have been using it ever since. Great vise! That thing is a monster.

Does anyone have any info/history on Massey vises and in particular, stats on what appears to be model #136 (vise spreadsheet does not have an entry for this model) ?
