All retirement advisers are now advising their clients to not reply on the traditional investment options but rather sell just a few of their old Wilton vises and they should be all set for retirement for the rest of their lives!

Now the first seller for sure is heeding the advise. $450 for a 400s with missing swivel locks. Now the second guy for his better shaped Wilton 400s, while still asking pretty good price, is not as smart as the first one and is destined to live in poor house at retirement. :bounce:

Nutjob,

Here is a Wilton Shop King with 5" wide jaws that I recently restored. I painted it with Rustoleum hammered deep green, and I really like this color. It comes across as a mint green.

Maui

Great looking restoration. Love the color. Great alternative to red. I have a WSK on the shelf to be restored one of these days. I appreciate the inspiration.

Thanks Mark. I got tired of seeing the red ones too and thought that this color would look good on an art deco style vise. The jaws were so beat up on the top side that I flipped them over, then ground and polished these surfaces by hand to a mirror finish. It took about an hour for me to complete the pair because the surfaces weren't flat. I don't know if you can see it in the photo I posted.

Maui First of all, I want to say great job!

Now I think this is one of those cases where you are kind of victim of your own success. :) as your mirror finish of the jaws inserts is in fact so good that it is reflecting the background (which appears to be like the ground stone pavement in the photo) which is then appearing to show up as kind of black bands on the jaws .

First restoration, a Rock Island 192. Going to be the vise on my toolbox at work. The 19X and I assume 17X must have been a home owners grade vise. Very light weight for a 3 3/4" jaw but built tough in all the right areas. I went with "Rust-Oleum blue slate" as an attempt to match the blue/grey of the original 57X series color. Really a trial for my 577 color. I think it's too blue to match the original color of those but for my work vise I didn't care if I achieved that goal or not. She's seen a working life but has a lot left. If I do lettering I'll probably do them in white.

Thanks for the  on the Wilton. It is verde green that I picked up at Menards in Sandusky OH. We were on a trip up north and I got a can because no one stocks it around home. The vise was in good shape overall, surface rust on all the unpainted area and just a few dings on top to fill with JB weld. I use primer over the JB and rough sand to blend or it will show through as a very smooth spot on the final paint. I media blast all the parts. I flipped the jaws and belt sanded surfaces. Unpainted metal gets wire wheeled on the grinder then buffing with Scotchbrite type pads. I put some metal polish on afterwards to help keep the rust off.

Gman, I think you're right. Here's a closer view of the jaws where you can see a partial view of my face reflected from the jaw surface, as well as the leaves from a nearby tree. It’s a challenge to get the camera out of the way. :)

Thought I'd just show this one- everybody seems to post pretty vises.

It should probably be in the craigslist dreamers thread- he wants $100 for it.

Parting that vise out is a possibility. If there are no cracks in the inner ring or outer base, cleaned up, you could probably get $75. I sold a spindle like that not long ago for $70 plus you will have a nut and rear housing that will fit alot of bullets.

A record no 6 and a record 35. I bought the two for $125 CAD, stripped them, and then hit them with some rattle can paint. Blue is not very creative but oh well. I think I am going to sell the bigger one as I don't really have a need for two vises and the quick release feature of the 35 is very addictive.

Are you guys able to estimate the weight and jaw size of this Wilton? It's for sale by me but has no information other than it's a Wilton.

Well the jaws look to go full depth on the hand truck, and the dollar bill is there for scale, so I'd say > the 5" bob guessed.

Nice work whowhatnow! 5-6” was my guess but I don’t know Wilton’s at all.

Old man (ok that feels weird cuz that’s what I sometimes call my Pops) Nice work on those Records, they look great. Never had the chance to use one of their bench vises but they look sweet. And the idea of a quick release... heck yeah. Anything that saves time is a winner I say, spending time spinning handles sounds like spinning wheels. Makes me think of all the hours I’ve spent in my life winding up air hoses, and still don’t have a retracting reel! 😁- Josh

Oh yeah, almost forgot, wanted to post a picture of the Reed 104 with the ACCO tag riveted on it I acquired this week. Scraped paint for about 45 min (not including the four hours of gently getting the paint off the ACCO tag) and then stuck it in a bucket of diesel for 24, then pressure washed. Contemplating my next move

Thanks guys, this thing is quite the beast. They're asking $250 for it. Edit: messaged the seller and they are firm on price. Bit too high for me plus I don't really have the space for that monster!

Be silly not to buy at that price.

Looking good Josh, you have done a real nice job prepping it for its make over. Keep up the good work.

That's a beauty TTL! I love 'em when they look like all they did was sit in someone's shop or barn and have that gorgeous patina like yours! Great find! Wanna triple your money? :p
