Out of my mind... Be back soon!
You should ask Tim if he knows of the case where Maerklin (Marklin) from Germany, the famous toy/Model Train maker who relocated a large amount of their die casting to China, only to pull out after having their alloy formulas stolen and inferior alloys substituted in the production of some of their models... They essentially got "Burned" by dealing with the Chinese and between the huge increase in costs, and the theft of their intellectual property they decided to cut their losses and return production to the EU and Germany.

"Direct transfer of technology" - something reportedly often required by China at the Politburo level when a Western company is to do business there. Why did they think China wanted the technology behind their products? There's no innocent reason for a request like that.

Wolpi, you'd be surprised how many shoes, clothes, etc are not made in China. Those brands that have gone there from elsewhere (Timberland shoes come to mind) often admit that quality went down...

i think as others have stated in the past that snap-on is testing the waters, to see how not putting a usa marking on the tools, is taken by the customer. And with the response that snap-on has receved from this site alone should have told them what they need to know, we want to see usa on our tools. Im still pretty sure that the ratchets are made in the states, cuz if you all remember i think the first 2 years of the dual 80 ratchets had usa under the snap-on logo on the head

If I ever had any interest in buying SO tools this effectively removes them from consideration.

I'll be the first to admit I was even disappointed when I was watching that show "How It's Made" on television and they showed Snap On tools being made in Canada.

I have to say... Snap On is just one of those brands I always thought was 100% USA made, and clearly that isn't the case. I'm not saying being made in Canada or Taiwan suggests lower quality, but there is a certain sense of pride coming from knowing a tool in your hand came from the hard work of other hard working tax paying Americans.

I sincerely hope Snap On reverses course and starts shifting production of EVERYTHING back within our borders. There are plenty of other tool companies I can purchase from that shift production overseas... and at least with them I know what I'm getting. Heck even Harbor Freight is honest about their tools that are made in China.

Above all else I just want some honestly. Being secretive about it just tells me they are ashamed, and if they are ashamed of where a product comes from, maybe I should be ashamed to own it.

you were the kid in kindergarten making all the kids cry telling them santa claus was not real.
the horse is officially dead. :lol_hitti

The Truth hurts sometimes, Dual 80 are great ratchets but im not buying into that there Made "100%" in the USA. If someone with some real insight would explain to me "why" after all these years they decided the current Dual 80's wouldnt receive the USA stamp i would listen. I mean seriously did they put all the Snap on drive tools names in a bag and then draw 1 out and deem him the winner?.? If so that is some serious bad luck considerig that was there Newest ratchet technology. Oh boy... i looked down and the horse was there turned my back for 1... second and now its Gone. Will somone please find the horse.:wtf:

The decision to pull the USA off of the ratchets was made by a corporate suit. Have you ever known a corporate suit to admit a mistake?

It still doesnt add up Chad, They probably spend millions advertising/producing there little videos explaining why there "american" made products are superior to all the other truck brands. What would be the logic?

I was under the impression that the 80 series mechanisms were Taiwan sourced.

If I was a betting man, I will bet the ratchets are made here with global components, and hence the real reason, there is no USA on the tools.

Snap-on is about as truthful as a bad woman, they make it up as they go, but because of their popularity and "beauty", they think they can get away with it.

I'm with you, just because the guts are most likely Taiwan, or China stuff, it does not make the tool junk necessarily, just very non-Snap-on like.

Nah... Not true. Here's the real story. Its a marketing ploy, The higher ups decided they could sell twice as many ratchets if they took the "Made in the USA" stamp off there Dual 80's. This is just a test run, eventually all Snap on Drive tools will be retro fitted. :lol_hitti

Like Shaun posted earlier, the RKRF80 which is the repair kit for the F80 is made in the USA.

http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item...=21365&supersede=&store=snapon-store&tool=all

It could all be a conspiriacy masterminded by Elvis, the second gunman on the grassy knoll and Micheal Jackson to fool us about where the ratchets are made. Until I see something to make me think otherwise, I am going to stick with thinking that the ratchets are made in the USA.

I respect that Chad,:) it just doesn't add up for me, but heck, I have dealt with Cornwell on a corporate level, and they don't make ANY sense either, so anything is possible.

I think the Dual 80 ratchets being the "ONLY" Drive tool not stamped USA is Reason to doubt. Everyone knows that SO website is sometimes.... Whats the word im looking for... Confused? uh.. Erroneous listed, Yeah that will work. Ive personally seen you guys call them out here in the Forum on actual COO. I commend SO for actually taking the time to List that info and make it available to its customers, I think other manufacturers should follow suit. With that said, I would still purchase a Dual 80 if someone offered me one below retail and i had the need. Elvis? LOL

Depends on the price. Like everything else. If i have tools made in china and have to pay only the name it's not ok. if i have tools made in china and have to pay a low price with a good quality, why not. if i have tools made in germany it's ok to pay a price which is ok for germany.
but i ask you, how do you make it with your clothes, shoes etc. f.e. nike most of these stuff is also made in taiwan/china etc.

I buy Mephisto shoes (France/Portugal), or New Balance 991's (USA), and I buy Jake Agave cloths (California) or Hicky Freeman for my dressware (USA). I general, IF (repeat IF) I can avoid it, I don't buy China... but with somethings it's just unavoidable... Electronics being one.

We have had a couple of e-mails from SO customer service reps posted on here. Those e-mails contain a message from SO that they believe their customers are not concerned with COO as much as quality, and also that SO is repositioning itself in a global market (this is my summary from memory.) That alone tells me that they have placed their foot right on the slippery slope.

I agree with Bull. They danced around the issue and never came out and said these are made in the USA with USA sourced components. There merely said their customers are not concerned with COO.

If that were true, why bother to go through the expense and effort of retooling to remove the Made in USA stamp from the tool? If customers really don't care, then why bother to remove it anyway? Are there a lot of Chinese purchasers of Snap On tools who are offended by the "Made in USA" stamp? I doubt it.

Seems to me they probably started outsourcing some components and therefore could no longer make the "Made in USA" statement. Perhaps some of their existing stock is in fact made in the USA such as the rebuild kit, but with time perhaps those will be phased out as well.

Bottom line - if they were in fact made in the USA with USA components, I'm absolutely sure a rep would have no problem putting that down in writing to a customer who has made it clear that they want a tool made right here in America.

They have a point with quality, I am not happy with low quality USA tools, just because the are USA sourced, see my Cornwell QC thread, sad!

I would like them to be USA sourced and great quality, so far the most consistent QC has been from GearWrench! sad? It is only sad for the USA companies dropping the QC ball hard.

If folks keep handing over hundreds for USA tool sets that are poor QC, the import thing may start to look alot more attractive to people.

For many people, it's not an issue of quality as it is about job outsourcing and undercutting American / EU workers at a much lower wage and thus reducing the standard of living for Americans .. in the end if you displace a well paid worker at Snapon and he finds himself in a menial service job he not only takes a lower wage but now he competes with other members of the service sector and thus reduces their wage... the few that might take the effort to get an education (say as Engineer), then also join the ranks of that profession and add to the supply of labor (thus lowering pay)... the gutting of our manufacturing base has been a boon for keeping wages down all across the board... it all comes down to two words..

SUPPLY = DEMAND

I would love to see, one... just one other Snap-On mfg. piece of hardline, wrench, socket, drive tool that we KNOW is US made that does not have USA stamped right on it.

I have told this before, but I live within minutes of the SO plant in Elizabethton, TN and know someone pretty high up the chain, they told me that the ratchet body is made in that facility but the guts are outsourced to Asia, They tried to make them, but the components were so small with such close tolerances they needed to buy new equipment to make them consistently, so they just outsourced to someone that was already setup to make them. This was said when the f80 first came out and at that time they had USA stamped on them. I have one with USA stamped on it. My assumption is that maybe they had a bunch of bodies made at first with USA on them because they thought they were going to make it all and just went ahead and used them. Then they started making them without it because of FTC rules or whatever.

A bit of input, not on the ratchet issue itself but overall snap on honesty about COO.

The test lead set MT300 comes in a red bag, clear front with white printing on the front, the 2 on the truck last week did any way.
In the lower right corner was a STICKER that stated coo, same as on the snap on site. Mexico, United Mexican States.

I seen that and put it back, dealer asked if I wanted them, I said no I don't want mexico stuff. He peeled the sticker off and revealed a made in usa printing on the package and said ok there you go no more mexico. Peeled the other one off the other package and put them back on the shelf.

NONE of the new claw hammers on the truck have the tag attached that say china on it, all have been removed. I wonder why.

What? What the heck was that about? Why is the bag printed and also stickered, and which of the two is correct? :headscrat

I imagine that they're using the same bags that they were before they moved production to Mexico. Instead of printing new ones, it's probably just cheaper to put stickers over top of the old ones.

I talked to someone higher up than anyone in any plant, guess what the parts are from the USA. why has someone not spoken up about one of matco's mew 88 ratchets that does not have USA On it. handle is made in canada/ lets change this to a rag on matco for a change. the horse is almost gone it is so dead. Some of the Snap On ratchets are even made at the milwaukee plant.

My guess is because, just as SO hoped, it is looked to FIRST as the standard in tools. So, people are more concerned when the battleship is going down than when the tugboat is taking on water.

why has someone not spoken up about one of matco's mew 88 ratchets that does not have USA On it.

I like beating this dead horse until we get a confirmed answer in an e-mail that we can believe. Anyone can say the stuff is made here, and if it is put made in usa back on the product. As for riping on matco, I will never spend a penny on matco products, so that doesn't bother me, but I am glad that they are made in canada, better to keep money in north america than go over seas. I do care a lot about coo, but also care a lot about certain brand names, I would go out of my way sometimes to get a name brand part for my car, such as a fuel pump.... I either wanted a delco or in the case I went with a carter, as I used to have a carter carb on my 51 truck... Not sure where it was made, but I wanted a name I thought I could trust, as opposed to a no name....

I have tried and tried to get the information from the horse, and it is not talking.
the guys that take care of the ratchets say USA. well for me and every other dealer that is enough to know that it is usa made. I trust the boys in kenosha to tell me the truth and that is all that matters....

Dont take it personal Shaun, The 88 tooth Matco has gotten plenty of discussion based on that Handle, And if you notice Most of the ratchets that dont have the bi-metal handle are Marked USA only account Previous legal action other tool manufacturers faced. Its obvious that Snap on isnt always truthful when disclosing COO, If you could give me a reason why the Dual 80's are the only Drive tool, Letalone Hand tool that i know of that isnt Marked USA. I would be more than happy to listen. Till then That Horse is still alive and im gonna base "MY" opinion on the facts that are in front of me, Not on Hearsay. Sorry....

I am not saying I wouldn't buy a dual 80, I went from zero 3 months ago to 10 now(but I also won't pay list price either)... I just wish I knew the truth. I did get one dual 80 that said made in usa, but something tells me that for all of the years snapon has been around, made in the usa was something they were proud enough to put on all of the tools. So what has changed? Either they aren't pround of being a USA company anymore or the product isn't 100 percent made here, which is fine but grow some balls and be honest about it. If they can't grow some balls, I would be happy to buy them a set of truck nuts.:lol_hitti
