Thanks Chris. I'm considering a pretty serious change to the car this winter, that will test out the new lighting.

Can't say just yet. ;)

It will depend on what I make from a few side jobs that I'm working on.

Scott, Your garage is perfect. Clean, beautiful, and organized. With well thought out storage solutions. I've shown your pics to the wife and said, "Honey, someday maybe . . . .?"

Actually, she loves it too! So perhaps our garage may get a face lift next summer . . .
Thanks for the inspiration. And just in case you don't mind hearing it once again, WOW!

Amazing how your car really "came to life" once the room was brightened up! I cant wait for all the fun stuff begins in my new garage. Feel free to see some of your ideas copied in my thread over the next year or so..

I'm guessing you mean the soffit storage? All I did was make 2x6 shelving around the perimeter of the garage. I made it 2' deep so I could just take a 4x8 sheet of plywood and rip it in half and have little waste. I sheetrocked the bottom and face of the shelf to give it a finished look. It's actually very simple.

I made the height of the shelving so that once the windows were trimmed, the soffit was sheetrocked, the trim would be right up against the bottom of the soffit. It's tight, there's no gap. However, I did screw up when I built the garage - the windows are about 3/8" lower than the door. So the top of the service door trim will have to be ripped in a table saw to get it to fit. That's why there's no trim on the door yet. lol I could have made the soffit height so that I didn't have to cut the door trim, but then I'd have a 3/8" gap between the window trim and the soffit. I didn't like that, so I chose the lesser of the evils. Next time I build a garage, I'll make sure the tops of the windows are at the same height as the top of the door.

I had originally built a 2x4 shelf around the perimeter when I built the garage, and enclosing it with sliding doors on roller track, recessed lighting, etc, is just an evolution of that idea. Here's what it used to look like in this unfinished pic, you can see the 2x4 shelf in the upper right hand corner of the pic.

And for comparison, here's a shot of the garage now finished, looking the same direction. One of these days, I gotta get those prints and Power Tour signs hung. lol

The 2nd pic also shows the light grey paint as there's contrast with the white garage door.

Thanks Dale. It's just so much nicer being out in the shop now. I spend a lot of time out there, and it's just that much more enjoyable now. Workspace, organization, lighting. My son loves being out there with me, too.

This is a fabulous use of space in a 2-car garage. The storage looks great. Can I ask what size (L x W x H) is your garage? I am trying to get some perspective on the soffit storage. I keep looking at storage cabinets but they are very expensive and take a lot of floor space. Your soffit storage idea solves quite a few issues for a 2-car garage!
Thanks,
Gary

Could you post more pictures of the upper cabinets? They sound simple, but I am a woodworking novice. Maybe pictures of the top of the lights and the tracks? Also do you remember the seller of the handles on ebay?

Thankss

Thanks, Gary. It's just a 24x24 with a 9'4" sidewalls. I agree, the cabinets take up a lot of floor space, but I get a lot of storage and work bench space to use.

Well, I didn't really take any more pics that what I posted here of when I was building/finishing it off. It's really nothing more than a box framed with 2x6's. The lights were for remodeling, they anchor into the sheetrock with spring loaded clips that were part of the assembly.

Here's the ebay store where I ordered the handles: http://stores.ebay.com/Contempo-Living-Inc__W0QQ_fsubZ5

And the 6" door pulls are here

Great garage and car. Love seeing the modern modifications on older cars.

Just one question about your car, why did you opt to paint the front bumper but not the rear?

Thanks, I'm kinda into muscle cars with modern technology.

The front bumper is endura, it's rubber. It was a factory option on all 69 Camaros, and from the factory is was painted body color. The rear was chrome.

I like the endura bumper over just painting the stock steel from bumper as the endura fits much tighter to the body and has much sharper lines.

Yeah my dream car would be a '69 TA convertable clone. Stuffed with a LSx. T56 and four link outback. Love the stance of your car, brakes, wheels, it's all perfect.

Wow learn something new each day, I didn't know Chevrolet used an endura bumper on the '69 Camaros.

Great job on everything.

I'm working on planning a similar project, only 28x28. Loved all the pictures. Wondered about the ledge above the coutertops. How big is, and would you make it different if you could do it over? Was there anything planned to sit there? A picture would be worth a thousand "Thank you"s.

Also, was the floor covered with a clear exopy? Looks pretty shiny, or was it just wet then?

The soffit sotorage is 24" deep and the openings are 24" tall. I don't think I'd change anything, I'm really happy with how it turned out. I wasn't sure about using MDF for the doors, but they've worked well.

The bare concrete, after being de-greased and etched, was covered in bondtite as a primer. In those pics, it was dry enough to touch, but not enough to walk on.

Have you done anything different around the Hot Dawg? It just doesn't look finished to me and I look at that corner in every pic.

Also a Q about the car. In some pics I see a couple of intercoolers and in other I don't see any. Have you added a couple of turbos that we don't see?

No, what you see around the Hot Dawg is how it's going to be. I don't want any circulation issues.

The car was going to be a twin turbo. I had an all forged 427 small block (Dart 9.325" tall deck), the turbos, headers, intercooler, BS3 ECM, etc, but sold it as a package and went to the LS7.

You wouldnt think soffits and some lights would add that much class to a garage...Top Shelf setup. Like so many others, I'm not a chevy guy, but thats a sweet Ride!

I think there are going to be alot of people using some or all of your idea(s) (myself included)

Great Job on both the car and the garage!!

I got new grey receptacles, switches, and covers... and they looks much better than the other generic stuff I've had in there for the past 8 or so years.

So, to finish up my thread, I used photoshop to make this wide angle image.

Sorry to keep asking about the sofits but I am kind of slow, you say you nothced the shelfs, did you attach the shelfs to the inside of the vertical supports or outside, this is the only place my brain is not seeing ?
I love your garage

Thanks. The best part about the recessed lights is that they were only $8 each WITH the bulb on sale at Menard's.

The only way to have a smooth, finished face to the soffit was to move the vertical supports to the inside of the framing. Initially, those were on the oustide, as seen in the unfinished pic of the garage in the first post. Instead of reworking those shelves, I tore everything out and just started from scratch. The soffit is now framed out of 2x6's.

So did you have the top part of the sofit a tad further from the wall to get the doors to hang slightly in and if so how much?

Yep, it's probably about 1/4" ~ 3/8" further out on top, just to keep them "tight" against the bottom. So far, so good on the sliding MDF doors as I was thinking that they might warp. But that hasn't been the case (yet).

that is one nice garage and the Car is simply beautifull.i'll trade my garage and garage for your car..

Thank you.

That's exactly what I did as well. I wasn't sure if my sliding track door idea would work, so I bought 1 section of track and a sheet of MDF and did a test section. You can see that in my build pics on page 1 of this thread, how there's just one door hanging there. It was my proof of concept. lol

For the width of the doors, I took the total run, divided by 3, then added 4". That way all 3 doors are the same width on each run. The extra 4" was so there was a decent amount of overlap.

I also added little rubber bumpers/stops to the ends of the doors so they don't slam into each other or the walls. With one finger you can roll them really easy.

I have 21 feet up so far, didnt get as much done as I wanted, one wall left and I am thinking of do it a little different. I have cabinets on the last wall and I am going to try to pull the face off and use it and the doors.I will repaint them , also I might leave the top open There are only 12" deep I am going to make it 18 " deep.So far its been pretty fun, hope to get some more done tomorrow!
