Nines: welcome back! Which part of Texas are you in? I lived in San Antonio in the mid-90s.

No sales worth driving for near me, so this long weekend will be full of working with the junk I already own!

Good to see you nines!

Here is what I came across today. Four sales, just under $30.

The band saw, vintage lamp and Indestro wrenches (which I needed to fill out my truck kit) came from the first stop, $27 total.

The Plomb LA, sockets and Snap on roll came from the other three stops.

Oh, you also get to see my tiny shops corner.

Nice finds! Especially on the band saw. I am starting to keep an eye out for one of those or even the 2 pulley model craftsman was selling at the same time. Seems like most folks think they are gold when they price them here in Portland. I also just learned that craftsman made a speed reducer mechanism for the 2 pulley model to cut metal that bolted onto the motor. That is a rare bird!

Scenario: garage sale / estate sale, old-timer has passed on, family selling everything.
Question: why, in drawers and tool boxes, are there dozens of dirty, used spark plugs jammed into the packaging for other brands (probably newer) of spark plugs; specifically, why hold on to spark plugs that have been replaced? (Maybe even, for engines that are no more.)

Maybe he is a hoarder... can’t let them go

Two stops got a few things. The plomb 1/4 bar ended up being 9/32, anyone want one let me know. The green handle needle nose ended up being sk Wayne, would have bet diamond.

Welcome back Lugz!
THANKS! Good to see you boys didn't burn the house down while I was gone!

I will spare everyone the 1,000-photo slide show and travelogue that I tortured my old Army buddy and his wife with this last week, but I did post a short tool-oriented field report on the Vintage Board here! :)

Today was my first day out since I've been back, and I had a meager haul.

I don't even know what the toolbox is (probably military, probably post-war), but I could always use another one (I have a few mfgr's collections without a home...). The antique wire puller needs de-rusting, but I am pretty sure it's a Western Electric. Not terribly rare or valuable, but a neat find nonetheless.

great finds guys!

A fair day for me, especially considering its the last 3 day weekend of summer...

A patch for the "musical" collection and the platter is for my daughter who went to school there.

Brass bount Square adn a tiny file handle. I need to fill and re-drill the hole for a jeweler's file size... Not sure the make on the square yet...

Bosch Grinder. the thumb button is a switch, and I prefer paddle type (dead man" switches but at least its not one of those awful, spring loaded thumb switches that separate your nail from the thumb... for $5 I wasn't leaving it behind. I'll do something like a sanding disk on this one (I think its #7?) so its less of an issue catching on something.

than it was off to the HS Flea, the 4" crescent is actuallyu a Crescent! adsn the Knive is a Sears Craftsman - both for a buck!

The Proto Socket is not my largest. he had two ore in smaller sizes but I just wanted this one. It will probably get more use as a pencil cup that as a socket! with it I got the rest of the stuff in the pic: Proto crows foot, adn 1/4" extension, P&C combo, Alumaseal, the husky is a torx from #15 on down, another brass nozzle; again no dupes!

Quiet day on the garage and estate sale front. Went to 7 sales and nothing worth buying at any of them. Apparently having tools means one Harbor Freight socket organizer.

The ReStore had a few things for $2.99. Picked up another Akro-Mils organizer with some hardware missing twi drawers, Frank Mossberg open end wrench, Herbrand wrench and a pair of garden clippers.29ac338a5092643ae8ffeb7ee9c54db8.jpga70874caf9dccbd474330f7225a4573e.jpg

Thanks nine! Glad to see you back!

This is my first Letgo score: Its a djembe. Not big, but not small at 17" tall. The head will need replacing very soon but getting it for $10 was a no brainier.

Those in my part of the country will recognize this as a tool. A survival tool.

An unexpected estate sale find last weekend resulted in this bolted down in our garage by Monday afternoon, for a fraction of the cost of a new one. 10ae59a085b5bd2c129a4ebcd14792be.jpg

Mrs LesserSon & I headed out to Jake’s flea market this morning (in light rain). Very lightly attended. Got all this from one vendor for $10. Then off to the Hamburg, PA, “Hamburg-er” festival. Good food, good music, good time.
The King **** is a Whitworth. Somehow the Wm Johnson Newark NJ No3 leather punch escaped the group photo. The Kraeuter has no visible size markings, even after I scraped off the polyurethane (I think) that some previous owner had gooped on it. I do not recognize the ornamental X on the small fat-shanked wrench, but I feel like I should.

I also spotted the Craftsman Vanadium 8” adjustable, but the vendor wanted $5, which I felt was a reasonable price, and I avoid paying reasonable prices when I can. I wondered about the age (1940s?) and OEM (Danielson?).
I’m kind of a sucker for these old Master Lock keys, with the Lion. My middle daughter liked collecting keys for a while, and this type was a favorite. The iron key I thought might fit a desk of mine, because it looked so similar. It fits, but doesn’t turn the lock. Oh well, a mystery for my children to ponder later.

I have a 10" Craftsman Vanadium wrench made by Danielson, and yours has some notable differences. The lettering is stamped vs. cast. My example has a broached hang hole with a full rib. Yours says Tool Steel which I don't think was ever a Danielson "thing". It was a marking on less-expensive (non-Diamalloy) wrenches of Diamond Calk/Tool & Horseshoe make, however. I have a Diamond Tool & Horseshoe 15" chain wrench that is non-Diamalloy, but is marked Tool Steel. I cast a vote for Diamond.

Bill - Tornado shelter?
Si, Outlaw. 24 sq ft, ICC-500 certified, bolted to concrete floor with 10,000-psi hardware. 1/2 ton of armor against wind-driven debris. Although the math says it's very, very small odds that any one house gets hit by a tornado, it's a comfort all during our severe spring weather to have a tornado shelter. As many have said (regarding tools) here on GJ - better to have and not need than to need and not have.

Hi guys, thanks for the warm welcome back! Due to circumstances beyond my control, I am now officially a Texan... I've been in the Dallas area trying to get back on my feet for the past year and finally started hitting sales again here recently. That pic was from a sale a few weeks ago when temps were peaking, it's still avg 100 deg though. I have pics from some sales I'll post shortly. Hope everyone is doing well, can't wait to catch up!

The spoils from today's picking back at the place I hit yesterday. There is still a lot to look at there, I may go back next week.ac27e7568861eb97d43bdaec767cdb1b.jpg

Glad everyone is scoring. It's been dry here for yard-sale finds the past few weeks.

Blew $10 on a rice-bag of bolts(7.5"x3/4", 307A. Unknown origin)..

Had a slightly better day today at the Tahoe flea and a few garage sales. My regular seller at the flea must have had username in mind when he pulled out the 18” P&C Stillson wrench. He also had this early pair of Utica water pump pliers. The Vlchek shorty is a smaller version of the one I found yesterday. The last shot is a teeny Barcalo DOE wrench.

USMC stands for US Metal Can, the manufacturer. Sometimes on the bottom of the cans are a series of numbers, usually 20 5 and two more numbers which are the date. The 5 indicates capacity in gallons, the 20 indicates the gauge of the metal. So a can marked 20 5 45 would have been made in 1945.

No tools today, although I seen a nice B & C adjustable wrench which I may still go back for, but I managed to pick up a tractor!

Its a 1940's Arcade, Made in USA, cast metal John Deer toy tractor. At $8.00 I think I got a good deal!

Also bought a 4 piece vintage glass front barrister book case with the bottom foot piece. This will hold some of my vintage motorcycle stuff and books.

I have to go back to pick that up tomorrow and I'll hit a local sale down the road, so we'll see what turns up there.

I've been looking for a 2 bay commercial stainless sink for a while with the plan to make one side a parts washer and use the other as a standard sink. The few used doubles I've come across we're either more than I wanted to pay, or had a shelf on one side or both making it larger than I have space for.

A month or so ago I found the perfect sink at the flea market but the guy was asking $200 and wouldn't budge. Haven't seen him again until today and he still had it. I got it for $100. It's Chinese made and a little dirty from sitting on his trailer, but it's unused and has all the plumbing. Each bay is 18"x18" by 12" deep. Kinda small for a parts washer, but it'll work just fine for 90% of my needs. Now I just have to find a suitable pump and build the thing.

The marine corps used the same cans as everybody else. The USMC on the can doesn’t mean US Marine Corps although most people think it does. Some cans are marked QMC for Quartermaster Corps, I also have a USN marked Navy can. I’ll post a couple of pictures below.

The marine corps used the same cans as everybody else. The USMC on the can doesn’t mean US Marine Corps although most people think it does. Some cans are marked QMC for Quartermaster Corps, I also have a USN marked Navy can. I’ll post a couple of pictures below.

If USMC on the can isn't marines, what does it stand for? :headscrat

Never mind, went back a page and answered my own Q...

Why wouldn't 'USMC' on the sides stand for US Marines when there are cans with 'USN' US NAVY and the 'QNC' Quartermaster Corp?
