Totally struck out today. I looked at Craigslist last night and found a couple garage sale listings for today that looked promising, but both of them were shut down when I got there even though it was hours from the scheduled finish.

Then, I had read in another discussion here on the board that Lowes is phasing out their Kobolt line of toolbox at some really low closeout prices, so I went there to check them out. Turns out they sold the last one just before I got there.

I hate when people list sales online and I make the trip out there and they aren’t even having a sale or close down early. I live about 45 minutes away from any city that has sales so it’s a huge waste of time and gas to get there and find out there’s nothing to look at. It also bugs me when I see garage sale signs that were from weeks ago that people are to lazy to take down and I end up searching for the place and never find it.

Catalogs! Nuggets too!

Lugz, congrats on the second bar. Is there a dedicated lady foot topic? I have a bunch and was just thinking about such a thing. There have been lots of threads in Gen. Discussion but I think a dedicated show us your Ladies’ Feet (tool related only guys :lol_hitti) may be in order.

I think the Nuggets ad is in one of the Automotive Digest magazines. It's still cool!

Got this old challenger set. Not sure when this dates from, any ideas?

The 3 smallest sockets and the extension aren't correct.

I picked up a few Plomb wrenches the other day off Craigslist. In good shape, and the 7/16" combo is a dual-marked Plomb/Proto.

Today I bought a Mann Jersey axe at an estate sale for $5.00. Someone had been using it for a hammer, and the poll was badly flared. It holds a very sharp edge, and it will only be used for splitting kindling.

is it a manual for Red Wing brand gas engines?
It is. Funny story, too, because about 30 minutes later at the same flea market I ran into a guy selling a can of Red Wing motor oil! Same company, same logo, same era. I didn't feel like spending $5 on it though. I will post more photos this weekend.

I think the Nuggets ad is in one of the Automotive Digest magazines.
Yup. First page. Cover's ripped off of the 'March '39. I actually thought it was a Blackhawk catalog until I thumbed through it. The guy had a bunch of old paper. I pulled out the Red Wing manual, the Thor manual and the other Auto Digest, too.

Old magazine ads are just as good.
Indeed! Sometimes informative, always neat to look at, and even frame. :)

What’s up with the QMC bars? I’ve found one in the wild and you find two in two days? Must be good karma!
Right? Just to put the finest point on it, pun intended, these are only the second and third examples I have ever found in the wild, and the last one was several years ago, and it went in my 2nd GMTK. I am keeping one. At a going rate of $50 among WWII collectors, I am converting the other one into some more flea market spending money!

Is there a dedicated lady foot topic? I have a bunch and was just thinking about such a thing. There have been lots of threads in Gen. Discussion but I think a dedicated show us your Ladies’ Feet (tool related only guys :lol_hitti) may be in order.
Go for it! All the DOEs, DBEs, Combos, and ratchets get boring and redundant after awhile anyway...

I only have a few besides these two sitting around at the moment, but I have photos of many others I have found and moved along to other collectors over the course of the past few years, including a few odd ducks, such as a Fairmount, a Harrold, and Woodings Verona Tool Works, that I would be happy to contribute.

So today I picked up an excel 4 drawer tool cart for 25$. A bit greasy but nothing a lot of simple green and scrub brush can’t handle. My question never heard of excel. It seems very harbor freight in its layout. Anyone have any info?

I'm thinking Sam's Club. I have an engine crane I bought there many years ago, and I belief it's an Excel.

I can't tell from the photo, is it a manual for Red Wing brand gas engines? They were built in Red Wing, MN for marine and stationary use, I see them fairly often at shows in Minnesota. There's a little history on the company here: http://redwingmarinemuseum.com/history2.html
It is...[ ]...I will post more photos this weekend.
Stuart: As promised, here are some photos!

Unfortunately, the condition of the manual - more accurately a catalog, I suppose, is only fair, at best. It's legible, but soiled pretty badly in places (something was splooged into the middle of one of the pages and it soaked through to all the pages before and after it in that same spot). Still, interesting read, and some cool images. See Pic 1 (cover) & 2 (logo zoom).

The early pages include a Foreword with a brief history of the company, their Guarantee and Terms, and a long detailed description of the Thorobred motor, component by component. Then there is a page for each motor, from the Model KK (7-8 H.P.) - see Pic 3, to the Big Chief Special (110-150 H.P.) - see Pic 4.

Some of the motor images are fairly clear. See Pic 5.

The last page is an ingeniously designed schematic, one figure of a motor, with dimensions keyed to a table of all the motors. See Pic 6.

As best as I can interpret, my gut instinct on it being from the 1930's looks pretty prescient. According to the website you linked, they dropped 2-cycle engines in the late 1920's for 4-cycles, and the line and range they describe is exactly what is in this catalog. Pretty cool to see that Zane Gray had several boats with Red Wing Thorobred motors.

Here's what I got today, the tools in the tin box are snap ons on the left & apex on the right. Looks like industrial extensions with locking pins. $10 for all of that.

Same sale, found various ratchets, sockets, wrenches, ect. $30 for that, one of the ratchets is a Mac and the other is an Indesto both in 3/8 drive. He was selling these cheaper then a comparable Craftsman ratchets. The swivel is a Snap On.

Last weekend at a rained out flea market, $16 for this haul. 3/8-3/4 sks minus a 9/16. There was a 9/16 matco so I grabbed that. Powercraft breaker bar is nice shape too. This guy had some Snap On stuff but was asking $5 for each socket, so I passed on that. SK & Matco will work fine for me.

Neat stuff. I've never seen any of those big engines in the flesh, but there are guys around here with the smaller ones that they bring to tractor and threshing shows and such, set up on a cart running a little pump or something.

This image would make for a great T-shirt, I'll bet it would sell like hotcakes in Red Wing. :)

Traveling to my parents’ place today, stopped at the Wysox indoor flea market. Specifically looking for Utica pliers for my display case, spent $24 on this group. One piece was overpriced, but I liked it, so...

Went to sale today that had a ton of stuff and they were trying to clear it out - whatever you could fit in a grocery sack for $5. Unfortunately by the time I got there the small stuff had been sort of picked through but I got one bag of useful things - a nice Huot drill index with a few bits inside, a good Craftsman hacksaw, a half dozen small C-clamps, an unused Bernzomatic torch kit from the 1970s, still in the box with all accessories and a full bottle, some tool holders for a pegboard, a roll of solder and some other minor items.

They had some huge metal shelve units with tambour covers that rolled down over the front that I would have really liked, but I didn't have any way to transport them. There were a whole bunch of small Acro-Mills parts cabinets, but I already have enough of those things.

Two other things I got that I thought were pretty cool was this fluorescent magnifier light for $4, and an Anvil-style case with wheels on the bottom and a retracting handle for $5; I understand it was originally used for some sort of photographic equipment but I figured it would make for a good portable tool box.

Did good today.

Found this Wizard case and a few (all Wizard) sockets for $1.00.

IMG_4628.jpg

Got this just for the case. I am putting together a few sets for my 3 boys and this case will do just fine for a 1/4” set. All the tools are Taiwan so I’ll just throw them in a bucket somewhere. Got this for $1.00 also.

IMG_4632.jpg

Got these for free! No idea what they are but they look similar in design to the veterinary tooth pullers I got last week but these look much older. Not sure though.

All the extensions are Proto with the exception of two S-K extensions on the bottom. The yellow handle screwdrivers are Proto. Other yellow handle is a Thorsen which I need for my incomplete set that’s on its way to me. Got lucky on that one!

Now for the non tool stuff today. I love these old flashlights and picked these up to add to the collection. I always grab these when I see them.

Captain Spaulding. The pliers are for hog rings. Kinda like a heavy duty staple. Used for attaching upholstery fabric to frames or fence to support wires and more.

Starting to see more sales as we inch our way out of summer in Central Florida.
Came across a very nice 98-8 Starrret level with a handmade metal box.
I added some felt to the interior.
Also picked up a vintage Favorite brand cloth tape measure.
And what I believe is a debarking tool marked W CARVER and a cool plumb bob. Anybody familiar with W Crarver ?

CL spammer note: I listed the Starrett level along with another Starrett level I already had on CL this afternoon. Within 30 minute I was getting a Spam text wanting me to respond with a "code to ensure I am real public on CL".Yeah, right. I played him a little then blocked the number. He tried again from another number or it was another scammer but I was tired of the BS and blocked him too.
They must have auto alerts for certain brands as I have seen the same when listing Snap On.

I like the spiral driver.
3 and 5 bucks.
I love the dremel. (I know what it really is but it'll hone just fine)
The speedway is all aluminum framed and will show up on the tool polisher thread.
Careful, that might make you a tool polisher polisher:beer:

I believe those are hog ring pliers.
Yes, from what I've seen they almost never have the adjustable stop for getting your rings all right.
