I slept in on Friday morning. Checked the estate sales on Craigslist and saw one that started at 10am with lots of interesting woodworking tools and cordless power tools. Unfortunately, it was all the way across town. Getting close to 11 I decided I should go see if anything was left. Picked up quite a few things I'll get good use out of. I've been wanting a ROS and was able to pick up a barely used Bosch 5" ROS. I've also been wanting a Delta tenoning jig for my table saws but the ones I've been seeing over the last year or two have been pretty pricey. Found a newer model one at the sale that will have to work until I find the right vintage one to replace it. Last year I bought a like new Incra box joint jig which I've used and really like but it didn't have the original instruction manual or DVD. That was okay as they're available on the web but I really wanted those just to have the complete jig. Found the instruction manual and DVD at the sale and only had to pay $1. I've got a few Incra products (miter jigs, box joint jig) and love their stuff. Picked up the jig starter kit which is brand new for $40. Sells new for $140+. 5 new packs of 400 grit 3M sandpaper ($1 each). Set of 4 casters - $3. New Britain vise grip - $2. Set of Snap-On 1/4" extensions (missing the 8" ext) - $1. Snap-On sheet auto body hammer (BF608B) - $1. An Incra 24" miter slider, a couple of containers of nickel plated hinge screws - $2/ea, face shield - $1, full gallon of lacquer thinner - $1, 3-in-1 oil - $1, Bora blade cleaner (new) - $4, 8' hose - $1 and a Oetiker 2-ear clamp kit with Knipex crimping tool - $15. One of the rare cases where the estate sale people were willing to deal on the first day of the sale. Nice haul for me.

No decent sales that past weekend, but my son found this Standard Electrical Tool Company Cadet Model 100 grinder on Facebook Marketplace for free. It is supposed to work well and just needs a good cleaning.9e92225baa21eda5e77482d08eaaf2c1.jpg6b4afd9a25e29851d127d5980d347855.jpg

Kennedy roller: $20 + $5 for gas. Will need some cleaning (the dirt is especially visible in the lower cover when closed). Did not fit in my car - my friend will deliver it within a week...

Sorry, not sure why it went sideways, can not fix it...

Quick question for you guys. Where do you find a lot of these garage/estate sales/flea markets? Are you driving around and see them or are you more likely to find them posted on a specific website? Any websites you would recommend?
Thanks!

I'll second that! This year marked my first Garage Sale thread to participate in. It's been a ton of fun, this is probably the thread I always check first, and a big part of this thread being so engaging goes to Lugz! Nice job Lugz! Only 2 months to go!!!

Don’t forget the word of mouth from other local members. I have the cell numbers of 3 local to me guys and we stay in touch and are constantly giving each other heads up on things. If I find a good deal I don’t want or can’t get, I give them a heads up. Pretty much all of my best items have to to me via the friend route

You got it Lugz. :)

I gave it a Muriatic Acid bath and it of course re-flashed on the rust.

Something I've found that helps suppress the flash-rusting after rust removal (I favor electrolysis) is blowing it dry with air. I have a little pancake compressor I keep near the e-tank for that reason. Hit it with the air gun and it blows the water off and dries it in a few seconds. Works much better than towels, hair dryer or even heat gun.

Idaho Man & All: if you want to prevent flash rusting you can also wipe on BLO (boiled linseed oil) and if you might want to paint it later several of the members have done that on top of the BLO with great results.

ALL: I picked up this old (1949 date stamped on 1/2 hp motor) Craftsman compressor a while back and it's got an interesting platform the old owner made for it that I might keep as is.

For whatever reason, this summer I ran across quite a random few yard and garage sales driving home from work...people would just stick a sign out on their front yard on a Thursday or Friday.

Also, if I decide to go out on a Saturday I'll check Craigslist for addresses, and often will pass other unadvertised sales when I'm on my way - you just have to keep an eye out for their signs (that's been tougher this year since there are so many political campaign signs in yards as well.)

Really depends on you and the area you travel to look in. I see very few sales being the same and stuff will pop up when you don't expect it. The great thing about this thread is seeing how others find things and what they find. I have not yet stood in a line and waited for my "turn" at an estate sale but I have been invited back at a later time when the person holding the sale had more time to haul out more treasure. You also will not hit pay dirt every time. Keep your eyes open when driving around, check the CL, hit the yard sales, junk and pawn shops. Tons of stuff out there. Good luck.

Not an angle finder, that is a Starrett no. 64 test indicator. Like a dial test indicator...but without the dial.

Thanks for this info! I hadn't noticed the model # stamped below the scale and I knew someone here could point me in the right direction.

2oolhound: I'm pretty sure that the "Gilpin Hammer with 3" square face" is a blacksmith's flatter. Like a blacksmith's fuller, but flat, not the same shape. What brand is the speeder with the doorknob end? Blackhawk? And what brand is the extension with the rotating grip? P&C?

That's great news, I'm slowly building some blacksmithing tools up.
The speeder is Blackhawk and the extension has no name on it other than a 4 digit part# which I wrote down but forgot to bring with me along for the part # on the Blackhawk speeder. I think they were both 4 digit numbers. I'll try to post them here tomorrow night.

A very useful Craigslist find for $125. My wife never needs to help carry heavy things again! It was used as a forklift at a local dealership and they replaced with a real forklift. They say it’s stong enough to lift an engine.

It has one minor issue. Rubber boot wore off that is used for brake. I have to see what to use to replace it.

I have that exact same lift that I scored at an industrial auction a couple years ago. My back has thanked me many, many times. And, even though it's another thing to make room for in the garage it is worth the storage space. It also makes a great height adjustable work table for bulky objects that you don't have to lift by hand. You're gonna love that thing. Congrats.

Nice lift, and looks like a good price for a back saving device too. Cool name, Tool-A-Rama!

I had a what I consider a very good day at the mid-week flea market. I went a little overboard with a hand tool-a-rama of my own. There were a few deals just too good to pass up.

Part 1 of the haul came from one vendor who had a load of interesting stuff. While I was looking around he pulled out a handful of tiny items from his car to show me and I saw one was a 4” adjustable. I asked what it was and he said it was his oldest wrench. Turned out to be a Plomb 4 incher! A little rough but for 2 bucks a nice addition to the collection.

Sorry about the dark photo.

-Plomb 4” adjustable
-Vulcan tools box, I think from a pressure gauge set. Rough, but very clean on the inside.
-unbranded Indestro ratchet. Funny, the seller was from Chicago area. I looked it over and it has made in USA and the patent, but no branding anywhere.
-proto 3/8 ext.
-Berylco wedge
-V&C Germany wide jaw pliers
-cornwell angle wrench and punch
-snap on pickle fork, punch, puller
- mac test light
-craftsman ball peen
- Japan made 3/8 impact right angle driver

Those things are awesome. I don't have one myself but a former employer did. It was a bit bigger than yours, and instead of forks it had a 1/4 plate tabletop. It could lift 6'.
It used a hand winch and thick wire rope. The crank handle was removable and had a storage peg welded on the frame.

I looked all over it and the only marking I found was a riveted on brass tag bearing an asset i.d. number, I presume put on by orig owner.

Ralmikes was a machinist supply. I'm not sure if they made their own stuff or relabeled other brands (like Craftsman) or option 3, just a retailer.
Funny, the big one I mentioned was in a machine shop. It made bench work on big parts a breeze.

Cool find! The logo on the compressor looks like Speed-aire. Are there any Craftsman markings on it?

Found both of these funds off Craigslist and fb marketplace.

2015 Matco two bay with power drawer. Really good shape. $850 I thought I did good

I purchased all the cat tools this guy had. Also got some Mac, matco, and Snap-On sockets. He was a former field tech for cat. He is retired and done turning wrenches. He was cool cat to talk to. He would look at a socket he had and tell me where and what part it was used on. He informed me they were snap on tools with cat logo. I was happy snagging all the sockets, wrenches, a huge snap on socket wrench, a set of matco deep socket, and a caterpillar torque wrench, for $160.

Nice haul and welcome to the GS thread. Like that Cat stuff.

You ****! That's actually not in *that* bad of shape...

Thanks. It was a whole lot rustier but I wiped it down some before the pics. I don’t believe I had a Plomb 4 incher in the Danielson style.

Love the funky handle shape on the Vulcan box, 3bay.

Yeah, I figured mind as well grab it to throw some stuff in. After I went by him a second time I spotted the missing Vulcan comp. gauge with some other gauges. I have another box I think is from a gauge but Vulcan is printed on, instead of a metal sticker. Don’t recall what the handle looks like.

Also, went by a Restore which some of you guys enjoy. A few decent finds there.

-new pack of Plylox hurricane clips, 5 bucks, not bad
-Craftsman ratcheting and magnetic bit screwdrivers
- Snap On stubby

Last but not least, a nice Shapleigh’s Hardware Keen Kutter adjustable. It was priced at $5.

After some investigation I discovered that this is a Presto Lift model M100. 1000lb capacity. Still sold and all parts are still available!

Even found a manual which includes a full parts list https://prestolifts.com/images/documents/manuals/Stackers/M100_M400_Lifts_Jun2017.pdf

It’s a bit low on oil so I’ll get that out of the way tonight plus the bearings need to be cleaned up and re-greased. I couldn’t help myself and already removed the bearings so the can soak in some kerosene to dissolve the old hardened grease. This morning I’ll call Presto to order a few parts (casters, label kit, and if not too much then maybe new bearings too)

And it turns out rubber foot is fine. After removing the assembly I realized the arm was jamming up. Twisted it slightly to the right and now it works fine.

Here’s a new one which lists for $1600

Well done, Matt. You do indeed ****.

3Bay: nice find on the Shapleigh adjustable wrench. I have exactly one Shapleigh tool in my collection, a DBE (of course).

So much greatness on this thread lately, but to me Drives' compressor just has that look

Costume trip to the thrift store netted me a genuine union made Steson for $2.49.

My computer chair had recently taken a list to starboard, and this one popped up on the CL free board...Its a $170 chair, and if you had a guy design something for a list of features without sitting in it, this is what you'd get. I have to lower it about 2", and maybe run some bots through the rattly armrests. Guessing t PO had similar gripes, because it seems unused. I'd be pissed if I paid retail, but for $.50 in fuel, I'll work with it. Also there I found a new little Dewalt bag, and some car batteries that will net me $15+ if not good.

Then on to a place I actually lived at in 3rd or 4th grade to pick up a free 'housekeeping cart' I doubt the plastic will stick around long, but the wheels are nice large and greasable.

Flea part II
No finer words in Garage Sale thread language than "part II"!

Once again, I apologize for the shadow pic.
That's one of the hardest things about GJ tool collecting, in my book. Taking a picture that doesn't cast a shadow on the tools! Seriously, it's a PITA sometimes!

Last but not least, a nice Shapleigh’s Hardware Keen Kutter adjustable.
That looks like a Utica.

I have exactly one Shapleigh tool in my collection, a DBE (of course).
Of course! :)

If you boys didn't already know it, 'Shapleigh' on a KEEN KUTTER is a wartime tell. Prior to 1940 it was still an E.C. Simmons brand.

Arne: good question and I always thought it was a Craftsman and haven't looked that close to it. you might be right that it's a SPEEDAIRE so i'll check and see. I bought out a guy's garage that was full of Heritage Craftsman stuff a while back and probably always had in my head that the compressor was a Craftsman too since they make one that looks close to this. or maybe I just thought since it had a Craftsman motor that it was ALL CRAFTSMAN. I bet you are right though.

Ole: thanks and that's why I haven't sold it (yet?) cause it does have that LOOK.

Matt: I had a few smaller hand crank lifts that looked like that and then I found a JET pallet jack lift a few years ago that replaced them. if yours works and you've got plenty of flat ground these can lift about a ton. I also had a steel plate that came with mine that made a nice table that I also used to stand on to get to stuff on top of some 10 foot racks.

sadly i just sold my JET and I probably should have kept the steel table top cause I doubt i'll ever find one like that again and it won't be cheap to make.

nice find!!

Lug: thanks for the FLASHLIGHT FLEA POST. since it's now NOVEMBER are they still there or have things moved indoors now?
