No offense but I don’t believe his Odin would sell for less then a crummy Wilton. In fact I believe his vise is easily worth $2500 bucks. And if I’m wrong which I would be very pleased because I’d hump a fellows leg for one haha. My main vise addiction is unusual vises made in my home state of Illinois of which that vise was born breed and created in. If your meaning other brands in general then please do not take offense to my post because I know your a true blue vise enthusiast.

There was an Odin vise on ebay with a stationary mount for sale about a year or two ago. If I recall correctly the ebay seller was asking in the thousands for it with the starting bid asking price but it did not sell for a long time. A forum member here ended up contacting the seller and purchasing it at a much lower discount.

There is the intrinsic value.... price per pound for the vise, but also the collector value which is difficult to price in. I was able to purchase a second Odin vise this year for under $400 shipped via Fastenal. The vises are out there they just don't change hands often.

Josh & All: that red spray bombed old rick island looks pretty beat and it’s only a 6 inch 125 pound vise if I recall correctly. His $950 asking price is rediculous cause I probably wouldn’t pay $100.

Waz: love those Odin vises your relatives patented and made.

I agree with you on the relative sad shape (specially jaws) and spray bombed and being over priced. However it seems this is an RI 67 which has 8" jaws and weighs 286 lb. First photo is from the said vise and the others are examples of RI 67 showing the model and size

ORC: that HUGE VISE GIFT couldn't happen to a nicer guy. maybe i'll finally get to see a big old 8 inch made in USA vise in person now when i stop by again for a visit.

not that you needed it cause you've already got so many cool things, but if you were amazed i bet it's SOMETHING.

CONGRATS!!

did you happen to mention how much the big Yost 8 inch vise weighs?

Thanks Drives...it will be here for sure whenever you make it back down for another visit. As for weight I haven't had a chance to weigh it but seem to remember seeing that the 208 weighed in the low to mid 280's and that seems about right to me. Also thanks Gman for the comments, it does feel a bit like hitting a jackpot. The big ones just aren't that easy to find and even harder to bring home. Ed.

007: I think the red one we're talking about is a #87, but I'm wearing progressive glasses and probably can't really get a great read on it with all the red paint.

it really doesn't look like a 8 inch vise to me and the jaws with the drilled holes in them look off a bit in the heft of them too like maybe they are missing their original jaws.

in any case the guy's asking price is over the moon with the condition it's in.

ORC:

ALL: Happy Thanksgiving all you vise addicts and also to those who are just casual vise onlookers.

Haven't contributed to this thread in a while, and while it's not much, I do have some vintage vise content to contribute today.

I scrounged a few vintage vises (and a metric sh*t ton of vintage chainsaws) while I was stationed in Europe for 3 years, and brought several home. This is a Paramo #3, with 4" jaws. And it's just the right size for the bench I got for my parents and set up in their garage.

I'm visiting for Thanksgiving, so I mounted it on the bench a few minutes ago. Sorry, it hasn't been stripped or restored. Just a lightly used older vise that's being put back into service.

I’m on cloud nine right now. I just got this Prentiss 19 1/2 along with a small vise that I believed to be Stanley Sweetheart. There were no visible markings on the small vise but my suspicions proved to be correct with a light cleaning when I got home. I got them both for $1409f9a3a825a5a914776bc943509bb5f69.jpg361ed9d145d678e3cbccaa7a75ad771a.jpgf3b6bf3ef63360c5e0f36b91f3c47555.jpg4d2dbc7ee006a8457557acb1241565c5.jpg

Great score (once again).

Smitty’s typical morning:

Smitty stops at the corner gas station, orders a coffee and then grabs a 6 pack of quality vises and heads to work. :lol_hitti

Hey Smitty, how many bad*ss vises have you picked up since your last post? :lol_hitti
Lol, I’m scanning CL as we speak. I find myself gravitating towards Prentiss vises, they’re getting harder to find in my area.

I like Stanley's too. I messed with a couple. They are built pretty nice. These three I added a Parker designed swivel base.

Yeah, I’ve put some stare time in on those pics from your Pinterest page. Knowing that you’re a Stanley fan I’ve been meaning to ask you about one that I found a few months back. This was an antique store find. I’m not sure whether it was a special order from the factory or the work of a dedicated machinist.bc13352b381937dfe9678ed338a5a5ad.jpg74ec6d81ea40de69a40daa01d86729ef.jpg5591da56d287d73f9a85ddd7e7dc3652.jpg7226540493d7e211ab227d2fb94c8727.jpg

No idea on your Stanley base, kind of looks lie a Machinist got a hold of it whether at the Stanley factory or in a private machine shop. I need to up date the Pinterest site, they are more complicated lately.

Thanks guys for your comments.

Recently bought this repurposed 1/2" steel plate to start my welding table build off of craigslist. Luckily for me it came with a Reed 214 attached for free. The vise has been neglected, but not abused. Gonna get it cleaned up and shot with a coat of paint and put back in to service.

Nice pick ups Bagged. That baby Prentiss is a particularly nice example. Think that post vise is a Peter Wright.

Makes me realise why it's so difficult to find a decent used vice for a reasonable price. Bunch of old men think they need dozens of un-used ones sitting on a shelf. Maybe one in fifteen in this thread is actually bolted down.

Cause you want a vise for cheap, no one else should be happy collecting them.

You're going to find that is an unpopular opinion in this thread, lol. Their logic: "It's better than they got scrapped."
And anything negative isn't going to make those with vast collections have an epiphany and divest themselves of their collection overnight.

I used to think the same way when I was looking for a suitable vise, everything I could find was worn out, broken, or wildly overpriced. I just kept searching...eventually started finding them...most of my finds have been a result of opportunity, right place at right time, etc.

It's best to look at the bright side: when you do find a vise, whether it's a very common model or a 1 of a kind unicorn, you will be able to learn about it here. This place has a vast wealth of knowledge. And really...vises are a big thing here, but how many vise hoarders do you know in real life? (I only know 1). There are thousands of vises still out there not in collections...lots being worked, lots abandoned waiting to be found. Furthermore, vise collectors aren't immortal...they will have estate sales eventually.

Would you rather they be recycled into Chinese trinkets? An awful lot of these were saved from scrap yards. In the way you describe them, I assume you dislike car collectors in the same manner.

Few things.

If 38 is old, then I better buy a ton of more vises before I die.

I’ve sold more vises in the last 2 months than I have purchased.

If you are too lazy to go search the local craigslist, etc, then you don’t deserve to find a vise for a “decent” price.

There are a ton on members on here who will sell you a vise.

Lastly, If you don’t what people on this forum do with the vises they own, don’t bother reading or posting on here.

You guys make decent arguments, however, there is a difference between someone that collects "novelties", (classic cars, comic books, etc) and someone who collects tools. Classic cars are essentily useless, as are comic books. They only serve to bring joy to the owner. However, someone who collects (hoards) things that can still be used, like tools, are doing many people a disservice.

Why should I care that a vise was supposedly saved from the scrap yard when it's sitting in someone's basement, fully prevented from being a useful item. What does that do for me, or someone else who has a use for it? It's just being protected and isolated like Golem's precious.

I have been looking for a decent, usa-made vise for under a king's ransom for over a month now. Unfortunately, every one I've seen on craigslist or ebay has been either a pos, not the right size to be useful to me, or costs a king's ransom. Yes, collectors drive the prices up even on ****** vises. Why? Because there are less on the market due to "Golem's Precious Syndrome".
